More money than sense - Unbelievable

Actually my latest purchase was US$1.28 + Postage: US$0.99 = US$2.27 for the ‘MXDL 3W LED AAA Battery Pen Flashlight Lamp Torch 7119’ that you recomended. (All this high finance talk is making my brain sore but my beer money is safe I think ) Does your $1.38 include postage?

My KD C8 XM-L is the first and last LED "torch" I'll ever want. My TF R5-A3 is the last EDC I'll ever want. The only thing I really want to get to complete my *needs* is a headlight, and a bikelight with quickly/easily removable mount.

I'm going to upgrade my MiniMag and Brinkmann for use on my boat. And *maybe* the only other thing I'll add down the road is an LED flooder for camping and vehicle repair. Switching out any dead interior lights in vehicles, etc.

I'm glad in that I'm *completely* satisfied and actually happy in that I can have just one thing for a purpose (or multiple purposes) that isn't just more than adequate, but completely blows away anything else that anyone has (that i've seen so far) around here capable of usefulness for the task at hand... and that I paid a fraction of the price they did in many cases.

Believe it or not, my new bathroom lighting was NOT LED, by choice. :P 4x 10 watt CFL, in smoked bulbs, and it's actually borderline too bright at that. I'm glad it takes 2 minutes to come up to brightness in the morning. ;)

(p.s. sorry for the bump)

Thanks for the bump, I wouldn't take this too serious.

If someone has earned enough money, he or she may well spend it for whatever he or she likes. If it is tons of flashlights, then be it. To each their own...

Still, spending that amount on flashlights is indeed a bit loco. Blatant consumerism at its best.

I feel sorry for the guy to be honest.

He has thrown $30,000 towards lights and still isn't satisfied? I think he needs a new hobby.

New emitters come and go, there will always be a more powerful/efficient emitter around the corner. To think this guy has dumped this excessive amount of money in the space of 6 months, is just plain nuts.

There is zero jealously here with me, as I wrote in my first sentence; I just feel sorry for the guy.

6 McGizmo LS20's...... those don't have powerful emmiters. Those are CPF history, from one of the most brilliant custom makers on there. But he has multiple other hobbies: cars, boats, knifes...... yeah. And when you think about it, its a lot easier to blow 30k on cars.

Cars? That much can be blown on engines alone...

Exactly. So this guy thinks its small change to spend 30k on a bunch of flashlights.

I'd be embarrased - NOT because of my weath, NOT because I bought what I wanted, but for bragging about my extravagance in terms of dollars and cents. Such statements can be a view into the heart of the individual. If I were that wealthy, I hope that I'd at least be modest about it, and make charitable donations at least as much as the worth of my flashlight collection. $30K can be the difference between life and death for some people.

I think you guys are jelly of his collection-and its simply the time period that he amassed such a collection that is amazing-many others have similarly sized ones.

So we're "Jelly" huh...

Using Don and Fishinfool as my personal benchmarks for online congeniality, I'm going to demonstrate remarkable refrain and just say "Please, don't make assumptions...".

LOL You're way too nice Match.

It's a bunch of chunks of metal and circuitry that light up, 90%+ of which will likely never be used. I'd no more be jealous if the guy simply got $30,000 in $100 bills and set it on fire on his front lawn. At least you could use the latter to barbecue with.

Any particular reason you felt the need to make such a condascending comment?

Damn right... that's what pissed me off. I guess I'd make a better Communist... rich and got that kind of money when others are losing everything? Be made to share it. This kind of stuff makes me sick.

Somebody with a job made all those lights for that guy. Better he distributes HIS money the way he wants than someone else doing it for him.
I never knew these types of lights existed. Some of these custom lights are beautiful. A little Internet search had me trying to justify one of these things for me but sadly it didn’t take.

He enjoys flashlights, and has built up a great collection. He has every right to spend his money on what ever he wants. I am happy for him.

I'm against forced sharing - I think it's better for everyone when individuals share freely. Hey, perhaps the dude is a good citizen - who knows? Like I said, I'm not against anyone getting what makes them happy, if it's within their means. After all, envy is one of the seven deadly sins; but... so is gluttony.

To me, the sad thing is the guy still hasn't found what he wants.

I know I'm never going to as what I want is a moving target.

And even if I had the cash, dropping $30,000 on unsatisfying jewellery wouldn't do it for me. So the budget stuff works better for me.

And it is a rather failed strategy buying six more incredibly expensive chunks of titanium when the first one didn't do it for you.

Repetition of failed strategies is a classic of several diagnoses.

Sadly enough, it is a classic behaviour of mankind in general, wherever you turn your attention.

I have 6 D10s, (all second hand).... Still dont feel satisfied... still looking for more ideal torches!

That's not my point, okwchin.

I have half a dozen mini maglites and several D-cell mags as well, and a good handful of multi-led cheapos.

I got the lights either cheap or for free, and I tinker with them and gift them occasionally. Some are only kept as backups. A surefire 6P for 50 bucks was my most expensive light, and I merely got it just because I always wanted to have one and this particular one was affordable on ebay. I am already looking at half a dozen old 6V hand lanterns which are currently being decommissioned by the local municipial works. They'll make great emergency lighting throughout the house. Maybe convert one or the other to LEDs. An E1L-outdoorsman or solarforce T4 are still on my wish list as well, just for the "just because I want them" factor. They are neat-looking and probably useful as well, but either too expensive (surefire) or unavailable (T4).

However, there is a difference between buying a number of lights over half a lifetime, and buying ten times as much in a very short time. The latter sounds much like compulsive acts due to gross subliminal dissatisfaction in life, as seen on the CPF link discussed.

btt, repetition of failed strategies are quite common in history, in politics, wherever you want to look at. People seem to make the very same mistakes over and over again, and often try harder by putting even more effort in completely ill attempts.

Just page through your daily newspaper, it's full of evidence. It's a gold mine for sociologists, historicans and cynics, and will make you a sarcastic misanthropist, eventually, if you think about it too much.
