(closed, all sold out) Give me your money: 2nd BLF Light, TrustFire A8

NOW...hurry up and take my money!! How do we order again?

I want Option #2 with DHL delivery plus an extra driver. How much are the extra drivers?

Wow! Sounds great! But shouldn't the tailcap currents be measured with a cell @ 4.2v? And do these currents on high mean it's direct drive on high? Rey said it would only be 2.8A on high?

-Garry

Meh, dd/regulated, who cares, give me a light and four drivers asap. I want this badly!

Hurry up Rey, reviews done all is good, take my damm money!

The current does sound like 2.8 if it only does 650 lumens in NW. Runtime on high should be more than 1.5 hours (closer to 1.75). For runtime to be only an hour on a 4000mA cell it would be driven at 4A and would put out WAY more than 650 lumens. I’d say it is definitely not direct drive and is regulated at least until the voltage drops to around 3.5v

I prefer to go by OTF lumens and not tailcap readings but somehting does indeed seem odd about this whole thing. How can it pull 3.8A and only put out 650 lumens unless it is an extremely inefficient driver (35% inefficient!)? At 2.8 tailcap it should put out at least 650 OTF.

How to order?

So are the tail cap currents just out of whack due to the partially depleted cell? Is that all? Yeah, 650 sounded a bit low for being driven at 3.8A.

-Garry

Garry, For some reason I didn’t even see the tailcap readings in =the='s post even though I was looking for it (old age). I edited my post above but either it’s one of the most inefficient drivers ever (35% inefficient) or something else weird is going on. I really don’t care because I’ll swap out the driver if I need to. 3.8A does sound like direct drive but for that it should push over 800 lumens easily like the HD2010 does. The 650 lumens sounds more like 2.8A it was designed to be. :~ I just want this light! :stuck_out_tongue:

+1 I don’t need the cell or charger, just the light……now……yesterday….asap!

I did want the charger and cell since it was a real steal compared to them seperately plus I don’t have a charger that pushes more than 450mAh. This is rated to have 1500mAh output but =the= measured only 400-500mAh. Obviously the charger is crap based on it’s own claimed output compared to real world output so now I don’t want it. I just want the light and holster plus DHL shipping. Heck, I have no interest in the driver either at this point. Looks like all but the host and the emitter are a disappointment. I hope Rey looks into the charger issue as well as the driver. =the= gave it the green light but the more I think about it he shouldn’t have. Oh well.

Worst case scenario, a kd 3a moon low driver is what? $5 if that? I’m not worried about the charger, have a tr-006 that seems to work well and king Kong’s and keygos cells to feed it, I just thought Rey said the drivers were two dollars a pop when ordered with the light (just checked, $2.5) so a few drivers in with the pack is a cheap way of refreshing some cheap xm-l lights to me.

I’m satisfied, I’ll be happy when Rey has took my money and the package is on the way. 8)

_the_ Thanks for the update , looks like its a go btw, no one came up with BLFFire [quote=_the_]

Finally got the light. It's gorgeous! More than worth the long wait.

I don't know where to start, but I'll try..

The light came very well packed, as usual when dealing with Rey. Thanks!

Here's the retail package:

..which contains: The light itself, a holster, TR-005 charger, and one TF26650 "5000mAh" protected cell:

The light says: "TrustFire A8 - BLF Edition": (Please ignore the dust spots)

The charger can charge one cell at a time, anything from 16340 to 26650:

It says "1500mA", maybe so in the beginning, but the included 26650 at 3.78V charged at 400-500mA.

The modes are High->Med->Low->LowLow, with perfectly working memory (more than 2s off -> same mode, every time)

Brightness is about 650, 260, 16 & 2 lumens OTF (Tailcap currents 3.85, 1.04, 0.04 & 0.007A with Kingkong ICR at 3.95V and 3.29, 0.90, 0.04 & 0.006 with the included TF cell at 3.92V)

Duty cycles were 100, 30, 2 & 0.3%

Estimated runtimes with a 4000mAh cell are about 1h, 4h, 100h, and 571h

I wouldn't call the lowest mode "firefly" or "moon", but it's very usable "low low" with theoretical runtime of over 23days!

Here's the same in photos (1/100s, F/5, ISO80, WB:Daylight)

The PWM is very high and totally unnoticeable at 2kHz.

What more can I say..

All systems green. Go ahead! Good job Rey & TF!

benckie gave the charger a good review (although he doesn't mention testing charge current).

I was really hoping for a good charger! Would like to hear _the_ review it more thoroughly, otherwise I might have just order the bare light. How about the TF cell - is it legit?

-Garry

_the_ can you get better tail-cap reading on a fully charged battery 18650 and 26650. And batterries with voltage below 4v please.

How many batteries do you have?

The more you have the better readings you can get with different batteries.

I just re-tested the light. The output measured by ceiling bounce is about 44% of Rook's output, which should be around 1450 OTF (according to JohnnyMac's IS test) => about 650 lumens OTF

On the other hand, the output is on par with my XinTD C8 NW v3 driven at 2.8A.

Tailcap currents with different cells were from 2.5A (unprotected TF flame 18650) to 3.85A (XTAR 18700 2600mAh). Most probably the light is DD on high(??)

About the charger, I don't know what's wrong. I re-tested to charge the included TF26650 and the charge current was now only 300mA. Maybe the current goes down when the cell starts to get full? I need to investigate this further some day..

I need to sleep now. CU tomorrow..

Sleep! You don't need no stinkin' sleep! You've got fellow flashaholics waiting for more information! (Just kidding.)

-Garry

It's already 00:13 and I have to wake up at 06:30.. Sorry.

But please go on with this discussion and try to figure out what to say to Rey. Should we go forward with this of wait for possible fixes? (I like the light very much! Even if it would be DD on high.)

Does anyone else have TR-005? Can you confirm my findings? Or did I just get a lemon?

Ok, from someone that has had this light and charger combo: I think 650 lumens on the stock light is a little light, but I don't have an integrating sphere to dispute that. I get over 1-1/2 hours run time on high. The charger is the fastest one I have and it will charge the TF in 1/2 the time it takes on other chargers, so I have a hard time believing it's only charging at ~500mA.

Perhaps the current drops as cell voltage increases to prevent over charging?

Heck, why worry, for the price on the charger and cell, its still a good kit, and looks good in its display box.

I will not like to have a light that either

1) stuffs 3.8A in an XML, it is hardly noticable brighter than with 2.8A, it is hopelessly inefficient (also in the lower modes because they are just created by the PWM) and ruins the led in time.

2) or else just looses 1A (more than 3 extra watts!) somewhere in the form of heat (on top of the normal losses).

The charger I received did not work at all. From memory on pulling it apart the positive terminal had broken of the circuit board and had to be soldered back on. I no longer have it as it was bought as a gift. The charger should ramp down as the cell gets a higher voltage in it.
