We’ve got lots of thick fog here tonight, the perfect opportunity to get some beam profiles 
Here’s some nice examples showing how much of a wider beam an XM-L produces, but also why XM-L’s are currently not king of my thrower selection.
This is my 3D MagLite that’s running a ‘The Torch Site’ 200 lumen XP-G R5 drop in and a DX aspheric lens. It is my current “throw” champ.
The other light is a Crelant V9CS running an XM-L U2 and 2xRCR’s. It doesn’t throw quite as far but does offer up a lot more light overall and usable spill which the aspheric doesn’t.
In this one there’s a physical size different in the flashlights. On the left is my massive 6D MagLite running a ‘The Torch Site’ 180 lumen XP-E drop in. The other light is my Small Sun ZY-T13 running an XM-L T6.
The Small Sun actually has quite a bit bigger diameter sized head compared to the MagLite, but lacks the ability to focus the beam like the Mag can. Evidently this gives the Mag a huge advantage in the throw stakes and while pumping out a lot less lumens (180 LED vs 600+) it still manages to pip the Small Sun in outright throw.
