My Nitecore EA4

Okay. I had four Imedions in the charger doing a complete break in, and they weren’t ready yet, so I grabbed four Eneloop. I didn’t bother to test them , I just threw them in.
After playing with my EA4 for a while off my balcony, mostly on turbo, I noticed the low voltage indicator doing a constant flash. When switching over to the other modes the indicator stopped flashing, but would begin again when I went to turbo. I tested the eneloops under load with my ZTS and showed 60%.
This is good to know. Turbo reminding you that it’s sucking juice, while there is still ample reserve in lower modes.
The voltage indicator that is enabled after you perform the lockout steps gave me five flashes. That indicates Five volts, which makes no sense to me, unless they weren’t long flashes, but short, which would indicate .5 volts. I’ll have to wait for fresh cells and a darker room to try this again. It seems to be the same system used on my EC2 except with AA.
My eyes are kind of dim, so if anyone else wants to give a test of their voltage reading, let me know the outcome.

Yes, they were actually five short flashes which indicate .5V. If it had given me one long and two short it would have indicated 1.2V. I’ve never had a multi AA in series light before so I am curious as to what the starting voltage will be with fresh cells. My Imedions should be ready in the morning, so I’ll do a test while having my morning coffee.

Seriously the x-ml is a beast. I absolutely love this emitter

I was wrong. There are no long flashes. I tried again with fully charged cells, and this is what I got; five short flashes and a pause, then seven more short flashes. I assume this would indicate 5.7V. I kinda like the long and short system used on the EC2 better.

Just got mine and noticed an uneven gap between the body and the bezel. Anyone else notice that? I hope it wasn't cross threaded at the factory. Other than that, this thing is awesome. Can't wait to check it out tonight.

One other thing, there's a rattle coming from the head when I shake it. Seems to be common according to what I've read on cpf..

Glenn,
Mine looks just like yours, I had never noticed that before. You really have to look for it to see it.

Mine has a gap too but it is even all around.

Rick, I noticed it right away. As long as it's not cross-threaded and watertight, I'll be ok with it. I'm kind of afraid to test it for water tightness though. Does yours have a slight rattle when you shake it?

Yep, never noticed that either. You really have to shake it to hear it…

I wonder if its affected by battery brand?

Sounds like a non issue if it takes vigorous shaking to hear it.

Mine doesn't take much to make it rattle. Not a biggie really. From what I've read it's pretty common, and it varies from sample to sample

I inspected mine and I don’t see anything like that. There is a slight gap all around the bezel ring, but that’s normal. I shook mine up a bit, and no rattle at all.
It’s a bit like déjà vu though. I’m sure I read in a thread somewhere with members having the same rattle, although I’m not sure it’s the same light. I can’t remember if they had to tighten it down, or loosen it up to get rid of the rattle.
I wonder if its a batch thing. Where did you guys purchase yours from? I got mine from Intl-Outdoor.

It has a small even gap around the bezel and it rattles a bit even when I shake it with moderate force only.

I got mine from Illumination Supply. Seems like a few guys on cpf have the rattle with the EA4 as well. As far as the bezel, I'm not sure how many are like mine. I'm not too happy about it to be honest. Such is life I guess..

Edit: I just called Craig from Illumination Supply and left a message on his answering machine explaining my concerns. Hopefully he'll return my call

That’s where I got mine, Illumination Supply.

mine does this as well - i guess its expected when you are pulling high current the voltage will drop

ive had the same thing happen with a p60 and 18650… running on 3.0amps it started flashing indicating 3.0v… i shut it off for 2 minutes and then turned it on low and it ran for another hour @ 60ma before flashing again

even at 1amp discharge on my tenergy hobby charger a fresh 18650 cell will plunge from 4.2v down to 3.8-3.9

but i digress!

im enjoying my ea4 very much… never selling this one!

I guess any design can be improved upon, but I can’t think of anything about the EA4 that doesn’t strike as just about perfect, although I do believe turbo should be used only when needed. I love the CW, but I’ve also got the NW on the way so I can see if it’s as magical for me as it is for others. When this God forsaken blizzard clears, I’ll try to post some comparison shots.

Try a different brand of batteries, see if the rattle continues. I’m using Imedion right now, with no rattle. I had Eneloop in earlier and didn’t notice anything, but I never tried shaking it.

I’m glad I held off on this EA4. I would like to get one, but not until they address the rattle and bezel issue. If I wanted a shake light, I would have bought one at Walmart.

Seems guys that have bought several NiteCore in the past had a lot of issues with them. Seems like they still have them.
