Here in the UK the nights are getting lighter, but there is still a couple of hours left to carry on mountain biking at night. What do others use as their light source.....remember its a budget light forum.
I use :ssc P7 c bin, Manafont Ultrafire XM-L C8 on the bars
Ultrafire C 303 on your hat might be good and not too expensive. It gets darker earlier in Lancashire than it does in Aberdeenshire so you'll need a bit more light in summer than I do. The C303 will give you a LOT more light than the TR-801.
A lot of things giv more light than a P7 these days - get an XM-L dropin for the C1 and life will get a lot brighter.
I use not quite budget but still in range MagicShine MJ-808 headlight on helmet and a few zoomies (not all at once ) on bar.
Last time I've tried MF XM-L dropin in a UF504d host. Good and shiny, but sometimes battery has to loose contact or there is something wrong with the switch. Under heavy vibrations it changed modes by itself. I've used protected flame 18650 which is long enough I think. Anyone has idea how to prevent self changing modes?
I use 504B xpg r5 with extension and high voltage 3 mode driver on high, half of the lens painted with silver colour as dipped headlight on the bar second light mount whatever i want mostly Skyray r5 or 504 xml as upper beam. Helm lamp is tr 801 or for throw Skyray 1JC8.
Don't have single mode driver nor I want to instantly drain my battery during downhill ride .
I didn't look into spring and switch yet. Probably I'll try some other host first. Well in fact I've recall this problem because of Night riding topic.
I run my solarforce masterpiece on my bike..I did it once for fun and now I can't go to anything else..2 hours on high and proper heatsinking makes it a joy to use..I still remember the one guy I blinded on the bikepath who had no light..he looked like a train was coming at him or something lol..only problem is you need a heavier bike mount because of the added size of the light..the one plastic one at DX works great for this size of light..
I'll take a look about spring. It could be even worse if I would use KD 8*AMC driver. I'll try to add some 12mm magnets at the battery tail, but have to check if there is any lose of current. That would be even easier than spring trick .
If you value yout teeth use unprotected batteries or time accordingly the battery swaps before the pcb kicks in and you get "kicked" a few seconds later.
