New Multi-mode R5 1xAA / 14500 light on DX! (Trustfire R5-A3)

It's a XP-G for sure. You can tell by looking at the picture of the emitter on DX as well as the beam shot picture.

It is odd that they don't show the head coming off but I'm guessing it's mid-body right after the Trustfire lettering.

Ive wanted a good cheap XP-G. Hopefully this will be worth the money and wait time. Looking forward to the reviews.

To keep parts off that don't want to come off the first thing I do it put them in boiling water for a minute...just the area that won't come off that is.

If it's Loctite rather than glue that holding it on it will loosen up and be much easier to get apart when you pull it out of the water and you won't risk damaging the part with too much force.

I've done that with the lens retaining ring on P60 hosts where you need that specail tool but I just use needlenose pliers.

It might work here.

Ha, you guys all want to take this beauty apart don't you? Well as for me, the best flashlight is the one I don't have to touch. I like computers, operating systems, and flashlights that "Just work" without tinkering. But at any rate I'll try to review this thing if it ever arrives. I am expecting the following characteristics just as a guess:

  • Good build quality
  • Blindingly bright with long throw
  • Ugly, ringed beam
  • Short runtime

Taking it apart, yes, that's a must. :) My predictions are (and I can't figure out how you did the bullets above)

  • Good build quality
  • Bright with medium throw
  • Decent beam with wide hotspot
  • Runtime of 1 hour on high (predicting high will be 200 rather than 325 lumens and driven accordingly and I'm just ignoring the spec listed).

Fixed 'em for ya. It's the 9th button from the left on the top row.

Hmmm, so if you predict 1 hour on high, maybe it'll do 10 hours on low? According to DX the output on low is supposed to be 10% of the high output.

I personally think it'll throw far with an ugly beam due to the smooth reflector.

Anyone else besides me have this thing on order from DX? Mine is currently in "Packaging" stage but we all know that means next to nothing. Although the fact that QCG also is selling this model is a good sign that it actually exists somewhere in some warehouse. QCG appears to be less deceitful than DX, I think all their stuff really is in stock.

I don't have it on order but have you noticed that the price at QCG is usually about twice what it is at DX?

Yes QCG is pricey, that's why I still put up with DX's poor business practices, because their prices and selection are great.

  • Low can go for a long time on any light if it's a true low
  • I know it has a SMO but I believe it's a XP-G and that means the beam won't be as ugly as it would be otherwise
  • I'm just figuring it's a XP-G driven at .700mA rather than 1amp due to the small body so it should be efficient
  • If they really dirive it according to the specs list then less than an hour. This part is pure guess.
  • Don't get me worng, it would look better with an OP but XP-G may beautify it a bit!

Both QCG and DX claim very high lumens (120 lumens????) on low, which is not low at all. But lumens ratings are notoriously wrong. However a common complaint of mine about budget lights is that the low mode is never low enough. I want a 1 or 2 lumen "moonlight" setting, and none of them offer it so far. 120 lumens is farrrrr too bright if that stat is correct.

I'm dealing with them right now. I just another response from customer service (there should be another word for it at DX). They will get a replacement part for my defective part and put it on my next order if I contact with wth an open order and they get to it before it ships. Of course I'll order a battery and if I'm not careful it will ship before customer service responds to my email telling them to add the defective part!

"Customer disservice"

Yep, exactly! This is par for the course. http://budgetlightforum.cz.cc/node/155

Im digging the light so far......it does look nice, I have one question though there seems to be a discrepency on the input voltage, Dx says 4.2 and the other site says 7.2volts. I wonder if theres some sort of extension tube that Tanks going to come out with.

Ok, mine is supposedly shipping now with a tracking number. I'll believe it when I have it my hands though.

I just went through this with DX and it went surprisingly smoothly (so far). They have an online form where all you tell them is the original order number and the new one and they supposedly take care of it. They sent me a confirmation e-mail the following morning. I had a store credit so they are supposed to send me a refund by PayPal. I haven't gotten it yet, but the order hasn't shipped either.

That's good news. Do you have a link for that form brted? Thanks!

It is here, the link that says "Apply store credit"

Good thanks!

Please let us know your impressions of the light when you get it.
