Recommend a good single aa light with firefly/moonlight mode.

You should have a look at the Supbeam L10! If you can't find a shop for it the Thrunite T10 would be my choice.

There's the L3 in with a Nichia 219 for $25.

Or with XP-G for $20.

It's a twisty though, so you'll either need to use some good grease or use both hands.

There is a group buy here, being offer by ezarc, a member, and Thrunite;

Sorry, just went there… guess they sold out, :Sp

Check out the Eagletac D25A, your choice of clicky or twisty, XP-G2 or XM-L. This thing is TINY and has a 1/2 lumen low. I've EDCed the XP-G2 model since Christmas with no complaints.

Thanks for the suggestions. I was considering the archer but if the group buy is off I might look at others plus it looks kind of big for a single aa.

The Neutron 1a doesn’t look bad but since it wasn’t mentioned does that mean it isn’t well liked around here?

I will check out the eagletac. I have a m3c4 and mark 2 digital from eagletac and love their build quality. I will have to do some more research.

AA & Moonlight modes, my favorite niche. Love the power supply options, from full R/CR123 equivalency to $HTF household scavenging options - you’ll ALWAYS be able to find power and provide illumination:

Which one of those lights takes the 9v battery ??!

I didn’t see a Klarus Mi X5 in the photo (can get 6 AAAA from a 9v battery).

Ahh yes, the 9v…. if it says “6LR61” on the outside, as Chloe said, you will find 6x 1.5v AAAAs in it (the brass colored cell). Just pop one into a AAA>AA adapter (the clear tube between the AAA & 9v), along with a ball of tinfoil as a length spacer, and you can get 50-100 hrs from a 0.2-0.3 lm moonlight mode, and around 7-10 hrs on a ~3 lm low, times 6 cells of course - that’s all I need to live by in an emergency. In a pinch, you can use rolled up $$ bills and a ball of tinfoil as width and length spacers too, just make sure you pay attention to polarity, and only use tinfoil on the negative end, since you can defeat your light’s polarity protection with under-sized cells.

9Vs are an important resource - during Hurricane Sandy I noticed all AA/AAA/C/D/CR123 were cleaned out of the stores, but you could still find 9Vs. I personally have solar AA chargers, and there must be a few dozen AA/AAA/9v in the myriad of electronic devices in my home, but if the S really does HTF, it might be nice to know you can use a battery nobody else will care about…. but you need an efficient sub- and low- lumen light to make it worthwhile.

I knew about scavenging cells from a laptop battery , but this one was new to me…

What is firefly more useful for?

It’s useful for not messing up your night vision.

I find the 0.24 lumens mode on my Preon P0 too bright for this unless I put my thumb over the lens.

My favorite light is now the ThruNite Saber 1A. My second favorite is the T10 which superceded the Saber but is still in production. They are both great on Eneloops and even better on Li-on 14500’s which are not recommended by ThruNite due to heat issues. I have found the 14500’s at least doubles the output on medium and high. The output is amazing. Both can run on medium for a long period of time without any heat problems and running on high for brief periods doesn’t cause significant heating at all. The Saber is brighter than the T10. And a great thing about it is that while medium and high are much brighter on the 14500’s the moonlight mode, which I think is perfect, does not appear to change at all.

You may want to consider the Zebra AA’s as well.

I want it for long distance backpacking. I typically sleep in a bivy. Even those CR2032 coin lights are painfully blinding in the middle of the night when used in a small bivy. I mean that literally when I say it hurts. I want a mode that doesn't hurt my eyes.

ThruNite Saber 1A, is the a good choice, and you can choose thrunite T10, thrunite Archer 1A and Neutron 1A, they are good choice.
the Jetbeam BA10 is good as well.

ditto!!

In the IlluminationSupply deals thread, they’ve got the Zebralight SC52 for 15% off, which gets it almost down to your target price… and it’s quite possibly the best 1xAA EDC light around these days. It’ll give you three different moon modes (0.01lm, 0.06lm, 0.34lm) and runtimes up to 3 months per charge. It’s also the brightest single Eneloop light on the market right now (280lm), though I prefer to use mine with a 14500 battery so I can get a 500lm turbo mode. The only thing I don’t like about it is the number of clicks required to change between sublevels, like switching from 0.06lm to 0.34lm.

Depending on whether you prefer to hold the light or get more hands-free options, the H51 may also be a good option. I find mine more useful overall than the SC52 because I don’t have to hold it. However, it is a little awkward for in-hand use.

You want firefly, you want Zebralight SC52. A bit outside your range at $64, but you can find deals below that.

2.7 lumens, 0.34 lumens, 0.06 lumens, or 0.01 lumens.

500 lumens for one minute with a 14500, or 280 lumens with a eneloop. UI lets you directly enter High, medium, or low from off. Once in high, medium, or low, simply double click to get a seconday high, medium, or low. You don’t lose any modes with a 14500. Click four times from off to get flashes showing your battery level. If the primary or secondary levels are not enough you can program a different secondary level. There are several low modes, and the lowest low is 0.01 lumens. No one has ever said they wished it went lower.

I edc one, and love it. It is hard to beat the UI and brightness. One click for high, two for medium, three for low. Or press and hold to imediatly get medium. Press and continue to hold from off or on, and it will cycle from low to medium to high.

when have you ever deleted a post?
