convoy l2 ideas thread

Following on from this thread

I found myself with some store credit, I had a mild quandary as I was not meant to be spending on flashlights, however common sense lost out, so I ordered a convoy l2 host today 0:)

I’m now interested to know what people would do with it.

I have a few idea’s, and parts available, or I might buy some additional parts, but what would you be planning if you had one?

I would say a 7135 driver set to 4.5 amps and two XM-Ls placed right beside eachother so they fit in the reflector. :D See how it works in a light. (The test bench one is still alive)

Now that’s a pretty host.

XP-G2 on copper 4.5amps.

That’s good idea, judging by the lens diameter, it would be a super thrower especially if you dedomed it :stuck_out_tongue:

18sixfity, that’s certainly one of my thoughts, scaru, I can trust you to think outside the box.

I’ll toss one of my idea’s in, I have another mtg-2 and a 5a driver that may fit, it’ll make another flood monster, but may give a few people a chance to play with the big emitter.

I’m definitely thinking xp-g2 on copper at 4.5a should make quite the thrower.

One point, I’ll definitely be sticking to two cells so any driver suggestions need to be 8.4v capable, I much prefer the full sized look, and at the current levels we’re working on, the extra vin will help with the higher vf I think.

I also have the bits to build it 2.6a single cell, 2.8ish amp two cell, xm-l2 nw, which would make for a very nice light but is I feel a bit “meh” :~

Well 7135 chips are 8.4 volt capablish. :P Also, 2 XP-G2s is better than one.

So whats not 8.4v capable on a nanjg? The processor? I didn’t think 7135’s liked 6v, never mind 8.4v :~

The datasheet says 7 volts absolute maximum, and I have had one running overnight at ~7.4 volts with no sudden death.

I'll second this one!

Another vote for XP-g2! But can they survive 4.5a??

XPG2 on copper at 4.5A MTG2 would both be interesting ideas. What about an SST90 led?

Ok, looks like I’d best hit vesture of blood up for some sink pads because I like this idea too J)

I’m still going to check the fit of the mtg-2 just so we know…

Right, I’m open to driver suggestions, but I think I have found a solution.

I already have one of these drivers and a 3d xp-g2 on an alu 20mm star. The way I see it I can build with this driver and the xp-g2 I have, see if I like it, if so, track down a sinkpad and highest bin xp-g2 I can find, add a sense resistor and we’re in business.

I like being able to try before I buy.

I will try the mtg-2 and 5a driver in the pill/reflector because with the group buy happening it would be nice to find an available host for the people wishing to do this kind of build.

I did also find a dual xp-g star at lck-led incase anyone wishes to follow scaru’s mad planning, the emmiters would be in parallel so I guess you’d want a 5a driver or so, more reason to check tge one I have fits.

Thanks for the brainstorming guys, you kind of reinforced what I was already thinking, tbh, I saw little point in putting any kind of xm-l in there, I may as well have just bought a completed light if I were to do that.

Getting kind of excited for this now.

Really interesting thread.
Fasttech have a 5a 17mm driver.
I would use that along with an XM-L2 on copper.

Yes, but its one cell only……no use to be as I prefer two cells or more in this class of light, ideally it would also have a side reverse clicky 10a capable.

L2 host

I assume that driver would fit perfectly with some file-work on the outer board.

Nope, too deep.

I’ve got this one which may just fit… based on the dimensions posted in the thread I linked in the op, the one you linked is an awesome driver but is a real big bugger, its driving an mtg-2 in my torchlite cd-v7 and only just fit in there.

As I say, the xm-l2 build is just a bit “meh” for me, its not so inspiring. :open_mouth:

Oh… Thanks for info.
I assumed that one was too wide, but when taking a closer look, it can probably fit with some work.
Update this thread or a build thread if it can be made to fit quite easily.
“Others” might be interested!

I’ll be posting a build thread as there’s a couple of configurations I want to try for others interested, there’s not been an l2 build thread yet.

That driver definitely needs to be tested for fit for someone wanting to push an xm-l2.

That said the driver in alexgt’s thread appeals to me more as its shallower, easier to fit and can have the sense resistor “adjusted”, plus I already have one and it has no stobe, thats putting me off the 5a driver, that and its already killed an xm-l u2, it might be over 5a….

The MT-G2 would be an interesting flooder with A large throwish spot. I have a similar project in the works, different host
To give a little teaser, the beam is near perfect for a flooder, and the host seems to handle the heat OK. Oh, and I’ll be doing an MT-G2 copper sinkpad How-To with this mod. Should be fun!
