convoy l2 ideas thread

Really interesting thread.
Fasttech have a 5a 17mm driver.
I would use that along with an XM-L2 on copper.

Yes, but its one cell only……no use to be as I prefer two cells or more in this class of light, ideally it would also have a side reverse clicky 10a capable.

L2 host

I assume that driver would fit perfectly with some file-work on the outer board.

Nope, too deep.

I’ve got this one which may just fit… based on the dimensions posted in the thread I linked in the op, the one you linked is an awesome driver but is a real big bugger, its driving an mtg-2 in my torchlite cd-v7 and only just fit in there.

As I say, the xm-l2 build is just a bit “meh” for me, its not so inspiring. :open_mouth:

Oh… Thanks for info.
I assumed that one was too wide, but when taking a closer look, it can probably fit with some work.
Update this thread or a build thread if it can be made to fit quite easily.
“Others” might be interested!

I’ll be posting a build thread as there’s a couple of configurations I want to try for others interested, there’s not been an l2 build thread yet.

That driver definitely needs to be tested for fit for someone wanting to push an xm-l2.

That said the driver in alexgt’s thread appeals to me more as its shallower, easier to fit and can have the sense resistor “adjusted”, plus I already have one and it has no stobe, thats putting me off the 5a driver, that and its already killed an xm-l u2, it might be over 5a….

The MT-G2 would be an interesting flooder with A large throwish spot. I have a similar project in the works, different host
To give a little teaser, the beam is near perfect for a flooder, and the host seems to handle the heat OK. Oh, and I’ll be doing an MT-G2 copper sinkpad How-To with this mod. Should be fun!

I love my mtg-2 build, as I said at the time, its subtle how much light its throwing out, for this oneI want to do something different, I do however wish to confirm it’ll fit, as I know there are a few showing interest in the mtg-2, s good host would be a nice find.

Cant wait for your build relic, oh, I pointed a new member at you and tom e, hope you dont mind, he might be after a couple of gun lights.

XM-L2 on copper. Copper pill, 3-18 volt 3 mode IOS 5 amp driver. I cant see anywhere where it says what batteries it uses. Looks like 26650. If its not convert it to take 26650's. Have fun with what ever you end up doing.

Cool, looking forward to what you do with this one. No worries about the forward, I’ll help however I can

Too wide. And if the one I linked to is too long… Well, I remember correctly, the one from intl-outdoor is longer…
The light uses 2x26650

EDIT: Checked a review the L2 (Fasttech site).
“This torch takes a 20mm driver with ~11mm of space available behind the driver for components.”
The one from intl-outdoor would certainly not fit. And now I see why the one I mentioned would be too long (could probably be possible to make it fit though)

Thanks RaceR86. The question though is what would you do with it. What I said is what I would do with it. Smile. Cheers.

An XP-G2 on Sinkpad at 2.8amps (stock driver) netted ~70K lux @ 1m for me. I was not able to get the de-domed XP-G2 to focus: the reflector would not sit far enough down to remove the big hole in the center of the beam without shorting… I used quite a bit of solder on the pads so may be able to focus it by removing some and the screws.

True…

The one from intl-outdoor is a nice driver. Personally Im not a fan of the loud PWM noise on the one from intl-outdoor (its quiet on high), and the mode changing is slow.
I believe its the same LCK-LED store sells for a higher price here.
(press picture to see the one they sell, thumbnail is wrong picture). They have size specs on it. I assume that is for the correct driver.

To those with experience. How is the noise on the 5A drivers from LCK-LED store? Are they quiet? I cant see anything about PWM.
Option 1
Option 2

Gords, do you still have a 4a 8.4v ramping driver from I-O? If so, use that with an xp-g2.

Well… another quick play with the XP-G2 de-domed: I did manage to get the reflector lower down… the result to eye (just sent the lux meter back to its owner an hour ago) is between 100-130k lux. The hotspot does have a sort of corona around it (although weak)…. my guess is the reflector really needs an XM-L/ XM-L2 to achieve the best results.

I would not be at all surprised if you could manage >160K lux with a de-domed XM-L2 at ~4amps (on copper) in the host… better yet would be 6 amps.

I do, but I never got it to give a stable ui. And on two cells, it gave 10 amps……shame really as it would have been perfect.

Cheers for the results manual man, gives me an idea where I’m up too.

How bout a XPE2 at 2.5a range?

I like the looks of this host. Wish it wasn’t $40+ dollars though!!!

My guess is you will end up with a corona / secondary stage in the hotspot if using XPE.

For $40 you get 1/2 a Kg of well machined aluminium which is begging for an LED pushing 20W. Considering the alternatives for that $40 the L2 I think offers very good value for money.
My only concern is the anti-reflective coating does not seem to be very durable.

That’s what I got to mention the other day, what about the SBT-70 or 90 leds:
