convoy l2 ideas thread

Too wide. And if the one I linked to is too long… Well, I remember correctly, the one from intl-outdoor is longer…
The light uses 2x26650

EDIT: Checked a review the L2 (Fasttech site).
“This torch takes a 20mm driver with ~11mm of space available behind the driver for components.”
The one from intl-outdoor would certainly not fit. And now I see why the one I mentioned would be too long (could probably be possible to make it fit though)

Thanks RaceR86. The question though is what would you do with it. What I said is what I would do with it. Smile. Cheers.

An XP-G2 on Sinkpad at 2.8amps (stock driver) netted ~70K lux @ 1m for me. I was not able to get the de-domed XP-G2 to focus: the reflector would not sit far enough down to remove the big hole in the center of the beam without shorting… I used quite a bit of solder on the pads so may be able to focus it by removing some and the screws.

True…

The one from intl-outdoor is a nice driver. Personally Im not a fan of the loud PWM noise on the one from intl-outdoor (its quiet on high), and the mode changing is slow.
I believe its the same LCK-LED store sells for a higher price here.
(press picture to see the one they sell, thumbnail is wrong picture). They have size specs on it. I assume that is for the correct driver.

To those with experience. How is the noise on the 5A drivers from LCK-LED store? Are they quiet? I cant see anything about PWM.
Option 1
Option 2

Gords, do you still have a 4a 8.4v ramping driver from I-O? If so, use that with an xp-g2.

Well… another quick play with the XP-G2 de-domed: I did manage to get the reflector lower down… the result to eye (just sent the lux meter back to its owner an hour ago) is between 100-130k lux. The hotspot does have a sort of corona around it (although weak)…. my guess is the reflector really needs an XM-L/ XM-L2 to achieve the best results.

I would not be at all surprised if you could manage >160K lux with a de-domed XM-L2 at ~4amps (on copper) in the host… better yet would be 6 amps.

I do, but I never got it to give a stable ui. And on two cells, it gave 10 amps……shame really as it would have been perfect.

Cheers for the results manual man, gives me an idea where I’m up too.

How bout a XPE2 at 2.5a range?

I like the looks of this host. Wish it wasn’t $40+ dollars though!!!

My guess is you will end up with a corona / secondary stage in the hotspot if using XPE.

For $40 you get 1/2 a Kg of well machined aluminium which is begging for an LED pushing 20W. Considering the alternatives for that $40 the L2 I think offers very good value for money.
My only concern is the anti-reflective coating does not seem to be very durable.

That’s what I got to mention the other day, what about the SBT-70 or 90 leds:

I doubt there’s a 9a driver that’ll fit unfortunately, I’m struggling with 5a tbh

Without trying to derail this thread.
The IOS driver has a very slight hum on med and low. I can only hear it if its very close to my ear. Yes it does take its time changing modes. About half a second which to me is ok. The temp regulation works perfectly unlike other drivers I have used. Voltage range works with one to four 3.7 volt batteries which was one of the attractions to this driver for me. I have no experiences with the drivers linked to. I can tell you about this driver though as its still going strong in one of my lights.

Extremely noisy on low and med. High on a single led is 6 amps, med is 5 amps. High temp protection does not work on my driver. I can report that 6 amps to an XM-L2 led even on a huge copper pill is a waste. 5 amps is brighter. This will eventually be modded with a copper star for a direct comparison with the ally star.

Thanks for info…
BTW… you said you have no experience with the drivers linked to, but the one you linked to and said you had experience with was the “option 2” driver I linked to.
Anyway, Ill stay away from that.

Gords, do you have experience with the “option1” driver ? The driver you have…

right, I did see this before, but couldn’t give the answer the response it deserves.

option 1 :-

I have this driver, but its only been powered up long enough to fry an xm-l u2 :expressionless: so I couldn’t do any in deapth testing.

option 2:- the link is not working, I’m wondering if its this one that you linked lower down?

In my case its hooked up to an mtg-2, seems to be giving 6a on high, but I forget the other readings roughly polite low useful medium omfg you have a sun in your belt high

Having just rechecked, with the light held to my ear I can just about detect a slight ring on medium, I’ve never noticed it before but its far from obtrusive. That said, there’s a hell of a lot of mass in the cd-v7 host its in.

I did just notice this 9a driver but it wont fit, the pill deapth is the killer on this l2, I honestly thnk the answer is the driver I linked in post 12, then do the resistor mod, if I can squeeze one of my pots in there, even better

having just clicked on the sbt-70 link, one of them wont be happening……mrs gords would string me up and blind me with it!

I vote for carefully mounted xml2/copper@6amp, should give 1500 lumens OTF, throw100k+ with impressive hotspot , =not meh, I haven't seen that in a big reflector light yet.

Yeah didn’t check the price before posting, jeesh, what an arm and a leg. Would be funny watching you try to explain your way out of that.

Thanks for info. That was the one MRsDNF said was noisy. So if one user says its noisy, and another one can hear noise (even if its just slight) Ill put my money on something that could have less chance of noise when buying a 5a driver for multiple cell use…

And yes, option two was the one you linked to. (My link in post 26 works perfectly, but something got messed up when I got quoted in post 34)

I literally had to hold the light against my ear to hear it tbh, and go into a silent room to pick it out, I like the mode spread, and it fit for what I needed. I’ve certainly never had a problem in use.

Im quite sensitive to the whine, so I try my best to avoid it. I can live with it, I just prefer not too.

The last two days I have seen two guys asking about if the whine on their flashlights were normal on this forum, they worried there was something wrong with their flashlights.

I like be able to give a flashlight to someone, or know that I could sell it and dont have to say. “Its supposed to whine like that, its not broken. Perfectly normal… :p. Just put it on high and enjoy all the light!!! Low and medium are for pus…… 0:) ”
Anyway, men usually loose the ability to hear high pitch noises… Im still below 30.
The Qlite nanjg 105C was a real game changer for me. Now I can enjoy 8+ AMC 7135 drivers even on medium.

So, have you decided on parts now?
