Making a 12-Up out of Mini-Mags and Nichias. It's Finished and BEAM SHOTS are up now!!

Wow, Nichia 219 flood monster! I bet the wall of light this puts out is a thing of beauty with the twelve 219’s in there, would love to see some beam shots of this. I really like reading through these builds you do, lots of good info. Great job!

Update- Unfortunately, this light is back at the center of my thoughts and concerns. I got the 14500 batteries and loaded them into the light. It turned on - before I turned on the switch - Oh, Well, time to tear it all apart and find out what the hell happened now. This light has been nothing but problems. I think it's one of those projects that are just a little out of my comfort (and knowledge), zone. I'm grasping at straws now, since I cannot see why it is turning on when the switch is an open circuit. It has to mean that there is a short somewhere that is bypassing the circuit, but I do not know where. And to top it all off, right now I am spending time with my favorite Chiropractor. "Spring cleaning" just about cleaned my clock, LOL.

I hope to work on it this week end if time permits.

Sorry to hear about your spring cleaning woes. Hope all is well soon.

So, what’d it look like the little while it was on?

Relentless. 8)

Sounds like a ground ring or solder touching some copper.

Back trouble sucks. I hope you feel better soon. I spent too much time at the mod table last week and got kinked myself.

wow, the flashlight is awesome, and the reviews are great.

BEAM SHOTS are up in POST #1.

Laughing

Its a WOW light without argument. WOW. You are the king of Mag Light mods. Ingenuity, creativity and just orsmness. Thanks for the build.

I’m going to teleport my next build to you so that you can do all that driver stuff and teleport it back to me ready to fit. Now go and get that back off yours better so we can start. If you dont I will have to come around and whip you back into line. Cheers.

Awesome light Justin.

Remarkable job Justin. I like the added copper rings at the tail. You put a ton of work into this light. Thanks for showing us.

You’re like the Picaso of torch modding, I love your work.

Amazing beamshots, Old-Lumens!

Keep up the good work. 8)

Well done Justin, well done! Can you imagine someone with dark adjusted eyes getting this full on in the face at 10 yds? What a defensive light for a woman that likes a med to large purse!

Take a break, take some meds, take care of yourself. (I say as I head off to move heavy appliances, got room in the down-in-the-back club?)

great light, 30 seconds is plenty enough to WOW!

Just wanted to say this was awesome!

that light is awesome… the buyer is going to love it im sure
edit: good work justin… and i dont think you ever answered if you were going to stick around after the completion of these last few wild mods….

I will be “around”. I have the EA8 coming next week. I don’t know if I will mod it or just sell it.

I have a few mods I would like to do, but lack of funds prohibit anything in the near future.

  • An SRK modded into a single reflector thrower
  • A 9-up XM-L, 3x1D (three 1D Mags together like this light was done) Maglite - Flamed
  • A rotating 90 degree to straight Mini-Maglite

Maybe Someday down the road, but I need a break anyhow. Just like anything else, it gets old after a while and I know I'm not the only one, as many here come and go.

I am going to play around with finishing off a few knife blanks to break the up the monotony.

well even if your not making lights, i enjoy your blunt “im too old to give a #$@&” comments
im actually in the market for knife, about a 4-5” full tang knife. something with a good steel but not too hard. dont need it chipping. probably a good carbon steel knife would be perfect.
something that i could skin a deer with, or use to split small branches while camping. i would love an OL mod in one of my collections. and to be honest, i think a knife would be that much better. who knows a handy knife better than a texan?
im not sure what the costs of such a hand made knife would cost, but if interested and know a good source for a blank, PM me

Amazing stuff. Thx so much for sharing.

Great work really impressive, quick question would a 3AA or maybe 2AA light using eneloops rather than Li-Ion, fitted with Nichia 219 be useful. i have several old incan 2AA minimags in my junk draw.

B10 Flux Bin 100-110lm@350mA, L Voltage Bin 2.7-3.1V@350mA, is the info i have found should be a useful general light and i like the idea of reusing my old minimags. maybe a simple 2 level driver.

being a noob in the arena of self build so i expect to get slapped about abit

The typical setup would be either one Li-ion or 3AA per led, but if you used a boost driver, you could do 2AA. There are a few out there. I think Fasttech has a couple 2AA bost drivers.
