$14.70 for the Trustfire R5-A3 is the best price I've seen so far. I have two doubts....
- What about the low mode? Is it the blindingly bright "low" of the original DX version? Or is it the new reasonably low "Low" mode that some other users have reported here?
- Is the LED really an XP-G on this version?

Would like to try this one also. KD seems to have the best price. KD also sells LiFePO4 14500 batteries and I guess they can give a serious amount of light in this one.
This might be the 14500 only version of this torch????? It does not list in the description that it will take AA although it states in the specs that it will run off 1.2-1.5 volt so who knows.
I was just about to purchase one from DX. I might see if KD will answer an email for me about this one instead.
I have done price match request at DX to see if DX lowers the price.
The KD one, I can not see if it really is an XPG. Difficult to see. But I think it is xpg
14500 only?? forget that!!! the description is bad, in the title says 14500 and in the box says "1xAA"
Enjoy BLF
I hope these LiFePO4 cels with lower voltages can give a good compromise between light and fire
"like everyone else - I’m looking for my next “last” flashlight" - ohnonothimagain
The product descriptions at KD at shamefully incomplete and blatantly inaccurate. So I wouldn't assume anything about 14500 or AA compatibility.

It certainly looks to be an XP-G in the photos. Not that it means much but I notice they have a AA next to it in some of the shots also.
I really wish they would realise that less is more when it comes to text on a flashlight, "Caution hot surface" if it's hot enough for it to matter then you've already done something very wrong.
I don't like flashlights with poor heatsinking, either. It's one of my many hang-ups. Also, if McDonald's coffee is so hot that it causes third-degree burns, guess what: it's too f***ing hot!
McDonald's deserves every hot coffee lawsuit that goes their way.

I disagree if you spill a drink on your self that you know is made with boiling water then it is you own fault.
I realize there a tons of people that will disagree with my McDonald's statement. Instead of arguing I will simply provide a link to a website that sums up The Actual Facts About - The Mcdonalds' Coffee Case.

Unless I've imagined it there is an 18650 sized light that looks very much like the Trustfire R5-A3, does anyone happen to know what it's called?

The Yezl Z1X XML looks like it's big brother.
I am already visualizing the duct tape over your mouth.
One is on the way to my humble dwelling. Im pretty sure its the same as the DX one. But we´ll find out.

Thanks E1320

It's the randomness of it all that leaves you wondering. My last two orders from DX have been quicker than the ones from KD /shrug.
It took 2 months and then shipped in 7 days
still felt like 2 months 7 days to me

When someone finds out the answer to the OP's questions, let us know please!!!
The KD trustfire R5-A3 arrived today, so here is a very small review:
Same colour, size and features as the DX version.
Takes both 14500 and 1.5 volt batteries.
3 modes high, low and the unusefull strobe.
Led is a XP-G R5
Very bright with good spill on High with 14500´s.
The low is very low. You can keep looking direct into the led on low without any problems, but as I dont have the DX version I cant compare the two.
Led fastened with two screws and very well centered.
3 o-rings. The one at the lens is GID
The clicky is a little hard to press, but works all right.
I have not had it long enough to test runtime.
Am very pleased with the light which have been on my wishlist a long time, and Im glad that I was able to get it from KD at the very reasonable price of 14.70$. Shipped fast and shipping was the usual 3 weeks.

Thanks for the review Nautic. Seems like a good buy, if there isn't any known issues with the design.
How does it perform with only one 1.2V NiMH battery?
It performs well with NIMH. Slightly better I think with Eneloops, but very little!

Thanks a lot Nautic. With a screwed led and such a low low this light gets even more interesting.
Would it be possible for you to measure the current with both NiMh and LiIon, please?
You didn't happen to have a peek at the driver, did you? I'd really like to know what kind of driver (controller) it uses.
I dont know what driver it has, as I have not disassempled the light that much:
Amps with 14500: High 1.05 Low 0.1
Amps with Eneloops: High 1.19 Low 0.18
Amps with NIMH: High 1.08 Low 0.16
All measured with my cheap off the shelf dmm.
With a power supply: High 2.0 Low 0.2
