Good deal - TrustFire TF-R2

Why’d you say you should have used focalprice? Do they have it in stock?

Edit: It looks like they have the “T*R*-R2”:

http://www.focalprice.com/LFC89X/TrustFire_TRR2_CREE_Q5_5_Mode_240LM_White_Light_LED_Flashlight_Torch.html

someone (was it wilbur) said that this was a typo and it should be “T*F*-R2”… I don’t know.

Jim

Ohaya - As of 2 days ago focalprice showed that it was in stock. It’s listed as TR-R2 but it looks like the same light as the TF-R2.
I think that was just a typo.
The reason I said I should have gotten it from focalprice is because I have heard & read forum posts about people buying from them and being pretty happy with those purchases.
I ordered from Hey-Deals whom I have never heard of. I just found them by doing a google search for the TF-R2.
I would have felt safer dealing with focalprice.
Hope you are able to get your light at a good price.

Hi,

It looks like FastTech may be carrying them by the time either of us get them from anywhere else :)…

Went to Hey-deals site and it shows my light shipped today. Good news but I don’t know how long it will take to get here.
Doesn’t say where it shipped from.
If Fasttech gets these I’ll be kicking myself for not waiting to buy from them.
Just received an order from them last week.
Ship time was 9 days to my door.
Longest time was from San Francisco to Az.
Go figure.

I didn’t want to wait for FastTech, so I also ordered a 2nd one from hey-deals.com, like you did, but mine hasn’t shipped. The one from sobuying.com apparently got returned to them, so who knows when I’ll get that one. When I opened the suggestion ticket at FastTech, I also suggested that they offer the TF-R2 as a host. I think that would be really neat option, as I guess that there are a lot of more choices for emitters and drivers now than there were 2 years ago.

Fasttech now carries the TF-R2. $24.24 shipped.

yup… ordered… brutal… couldn’t even try to say no… was already reading the pp confirmation before my senses actually kicked in… (sigh)…

Ordered. I am so weak. lol

Not sure what pill I am going to go with yet. Maybe XPG2? Anyone know of a good one off hand?

Actually, that’s a good question :(… I’ve been so focused on how to get any P60 into it, I hadn’t thought about what would work well :(…

Nice catch :(!

Some of you have been around BLF for awhile, was there any “history” with people trying different drop-ins with this light?

not that i remember, pretty much just xml swaps from what i remember

Hi,

I just got one of the TF-R2s in recently (I had actually ordered from several places, because I was worried that they’d send some other light instead of a TF-R2), so here’re some pics:

Next to a C8:

Tailstanding:

Disassembled:

Front:

Tailcap:

Emitter view:

Driver view:

Note that there aren’t any “holes” on the rim of front of the pill or on the driver end, but I found that if I poked something into that small hole on the edge of the driver PCB I could turn it.

I didn’t do any beamshots, because what I suppose the main interest is for use as a potential P60 host. However, I was out tonight, and I’d say that, as-is, it’s comparable to a C8 that I have that has a “Q5” emitter.

I also haven’t had time (plus I don’t have a flat file) to try to get a P60 module into this light. Sorry :(…

My light arrived from Hey-Deals on the 16th.
That’s 11 days from placing my order.
Pretty good I think.
Light was in a plain white unlabeled box w/ no label other than where somebody had written tf-r2 in pen.
Light works & looks fine - no scratches or blemishes that I could see.
I really had my doubts about Hey-Deals but 11 days to my door, good packaging(they did put bubble-wrap inside for protection), end product in good shape, can’t argue with that.
Outer cardboard box was pretty beat up though but didn’t matter.
Now I just gotta figure out how to mod this thing, I’m new to this.
The light has really good throw but it’s like a pinpoint.

Hi,

Thanks for the update. If you think Hey-deals was slow, try sobuying.com - Mine is STILL in-transit, and I ordered that before the one I order from Hey-deals, and before the one I ordered from FT.

Yes, I now have 3+ of these suckers :)…! Actually, long story, but I actually got a bunch more of them :(…

I had a thread where I documented getting a P60 drop-in working. I’ll try to find it and post here.

Jim

Edit: Here’s the thread: TrustFire TF-R2 and P60 Drop-in

thanks. that looks do-able to me.

Hi,

If you do do this, please post about how it goes, which drop-in, if any mods were needed, etc., to contribute to the knowledge about this light!

Youve gotta love that light. Deeper reflector for slightly more throw than C8, will take any normal P60 pill thread (all of mine screw right in without modification and focus properly), heavy aluminum head to evenly disperse the heat throughout the entire head, future proof. If you cant find the best XML P60 for it, the foolproof way is to build your own. Yank out the crummy XRE star and driver from the pill and replace them. Its super easy if you can solder. Or just buy a bare brass pill for a dollar and build from there.

My recommendation is this driver. Great price & performance, and you get to chose your modes. Most go for the 4th Star : 5mA - 2% –25% –100%. While your there, pick up an XML in the bin & tint you most prefer (16mm star).

FlashPilot,

If you can remember, can you mention which drop-ins worked for you (and any mods needed, even if minor)? I think it’d be helpful…

Jim

Thanks for the pics about the mod. I’m so new at this that I thought that putting a p60 into this light was the same as when I assembled my 2 Solarforce lights.
It may take me a while to get to this because I’m not sure I want to sacrifice one of my existing SF dropins to this or wait until I get a new dropin to use.
I couldn’t solder if my life depended on it so I’ll definitely not be trying anything involving that.
not saying I wouldn’t like to learn, I just don’t know when I’ll get around to it.
I’m really glad you posted those pics because now I have some idea of how to do this.
It looks pretty simple, but if it can possibly be screwed up, I’m the guy who can.
Take care
Jim

just realized we share same 1st name.

Hi,

Now that FastTech carries the TF-R2, this is probably not relevant, but about a month ago, before FT carried it, I ordered a TF-R2 from sobuying.com.

Well, it took about a month to get here, finally, today, and guess what? What was in the package was NOT a TF-R2, but some generic C8 clone, a “Hong Ree C8” :(!!

While waiting for the TF-R2, I communicated with them numerous times, and they always indicated that they have a “TF-R2”.

I’ve just opened a dispute with Paypal, so my advice would be to stay away from these guys. Plus, as I posted before, they have very strange procedure where you don’t pay via their website, but rather have to use Paypal to Send Money…

That really should have been a hint…

Later,
Jim

I dont recall all the P60’s that Ive ran through this light. Everything from generics that came with other p60 lights to solarforce, trustfire, ultrafire and others in various flavors of XML, XPG, XRE, XPE. Its been well over a year, but I know they all fit without modifications because I used the TF-R2 as a host to decide which ones to gift to others while getting rid of most of my P60 collection. I kept the “good pills” for myself. Im fairly sure that the brass pill from an Ultrafire XM-L 3 mode P60 dropin from Manafont now resides in it. I did however swap the driver and emitter in the pill, which has no impact on compatibility.

I see that others might have had some compatibility issues. Maybe they were unlucky… or I just got lucky. Either way, I wont be swapping pills again until something better comes along to justify it.
