Zebralight headlamp tips / tricks / mods

So, I talk a lot about how much I like my Zebralight H51. Many people consider it just a headlamp, but with a couple simple changes it can be so much more… I’ll document those mods here. Also, I’d like to hear about other people’s ideas for tricks and mods for headlamps.

I recommend two simple additions to the light: a magnet and a different headband.

The magnet is simple. Get a small neodymium magnet and find a way to EDC it. I stick it inside the zipper pull on my purse. This allows you to attach the headlamp to any ferrous metal surface. With the clip attached to the headlamp, stick the magnet onto the clip and then put the whole thing onto a metal object. You then have full 180+360 degree aiming capability, by rotating the clip on the magnet (360 degrees) and rotating the headlamp in its clip (~180 degrees). Instant light wherever you need it.

The headband requires three parts: A wide, stretchy shoelace*, a piece of double-sided velcro, and a cable lock. Here’s a picture of the result:
* I recommend a wide and stretchy shoelace because it’s the most comfortable type to wear around one’s head.

This allows you to wear the light on your head, much like the original headband, but it also works as a necklace or can attach to pretty much anything with a diameter less than a foot. As a bonus, it’s smaller and lighter than the normal headband so it’s easier to EDC and doesn’t interfere with the clip.

I normally either keep my H51 clipped to the front of my purse, facing forward, for hands-free use… or wear it as a necklace so it’ll shine right in front of me with full up/down aiming freedom. Here’s how it looks on my purse:

The magnet I carry is visible here, stuck inside the D-ring on the zipper pull. The clip normally stays clipped to my purse even when the light is being used as a necklace, but I take it off the purse once in a while when I use the magnet or need to clip it elsewhere. (it clips nicely to a car’s sun visor, for reading in the passenger seat of a car)

When used as a necklace, it can easily be tucked under clothing to be less conspicuous, or even tucked into a bra so there won’t be a bump poking through a shirt. It’s then easy to reveal again whenever you need hands-free light.

I should also mention that, even without these mods, you can clip the H51 between buttons on a button-up shirt in order to use it as a torso light. This is a very convenient way for guys to use it without the necklace attachment, or for girls who wear button-up shirts. Or clip it to your shirt in addition to the necklace mod, to keep the light more steady during use.

For extended head-mounted use, I recommend using the normal headband instead because it’s more comfortable.

What headlamp tips/ideas/mods have you come up with?

On another note, here’s an easy way to make the stock Zebralight headband more comfortable. It’s the varuscelli method, suggested by varuscelli on CPF:

It feels much better on my forehead than the default headband routing, but it also makes the length no longer adjustable.

Oh, and if you have a baseball cap, you can simply put attach the rubber light holder directly to the cap’s adjustment straps. Take off the normal headband and thread the baseball cap straps through the rubber piece instead. This way it sits on the back of your head during the day and, when you need light, just turn the hat around.

I realize this is a few months old but I wanted to add my 2¢. I have 2 ZL headlamps (30 and 51w) and 3 SC series (52, 51w and 600w) and in all but the 600 I have a small neodymium magnet on the INSIDE of the tail cap under the spring, I was able to squeeze them under the springs and super glue them in and it is still plenty strong enough to hold the lights upside down or even on a vertical surface but because its inside it has slightly less opportunity to stick to everything you don’t want it sticking to and it looks a little cleaner too plus there’s no chance of it falling off or the light falling off of it while stuck to something.

 haha . That’s the tips of Zebralight headlamp for me . Thanks for sharing!

Can you say approximately what power level you find most comfortable to work with? Say, if you’re working on a driver on the table or desk in front of you, about how many lumens do you find enough vs too much? Is a light with 400 or more lumens overkill for a working head lamp? I think those might be more intended for bicycling or something.

If you could take a look at the Crelant CH10 and give me your thoughts on it, I’d appreciate it. Something about the style of the Crelant looks appealing, it uses a cell I’ve got plenty of and in the low powered modes (supposedly it has infinitely variable brightness to go along with it’s Hi,Lo, Strobe modes) , the level we’d be more prone to use working right in front of us, the bigger cell would last and last. I could always make an aluminum dummy cell and use an 18350 to power this one, lighten it up considerably. And it comes with a strap that has the extra piece down the middle, the one that runs across the top of your head front to back to keep the whole thing from slipping down. Would this make it more comfortable or more of a nuisance?

I’m thinking some diffuser film on the lens would help the Crelant. Also thinking the emitter might benefit from a swap.

In the ArmyTek the electronics are potted. While it’s obviously a nice light, if I wanted to change anything it’d be extremely difficult.

Thanks for your tips and insights, appreciate the help.

Answered back in the original thread…
-> Head lamp, Do I need one? Update: Nitecore HC90 is AWESOME! :)

Even tho I have a 2 tube 2’ T5 hanging 30” above my work bench I still wear my h52w all the time and run it on H2 when I’m working, I like light, lots of light. I would run it on H1 but it gets a little warm. I go threw 3-5 batteries a day working (modding lights is my full time job these days).
