1970 Ray O Vac Sportsman Mod

Looks great ! nice “upgrade” to a classic torch. Beamshots soon ?

I give you credit. Nice Mod.

I wish I had your skills, as I have many old school lights. For my old lights, I usually just replace the bulb with a PR based LED, and I am good to go.

That’s awesome! I have a small collection of old (vintage, retro) flashlights and you got me thinking now…

Well done nitroz. What a sleeper. Do you have a link for the reflector?

Very, very cool. I keep seeing them on e-bay and thinking I should try modding one. Now that I know it will work I just might get more serious.

Very nice! What amps are you running it? and did you take care of any heatsinking? Pity indeed you did not take any build pictures, but still: very nice!

Beautiful…. would like to see some pics of it apart!

I really like that. Remarkable looking condition for a vintage light.

DX Reflector

Go ahead and take it back apart, so we can see the rest of the build.Tongue Out

Great looking light.

Here is the link to the reflector. At nine dollars you can beat it. It focuses the XML2 very well with lots of spill.

I love this light!

Leave it up to OL to find the link. I placed it below also.

I am thinking about taking it back apart for some tweaking so I might just do that.

It running 3amps on high.

I used a huge copper plumbing cap with Old lumens solder copper-mixture to fill it in. It fits fairly snug and the LED is mounted on a VOB (vestureofblood) copper sink.

I used a PVC cap, drilled it out with a stepped bit and added a spring and mounted the 3amp board to the top of the spring. Then I soldered the negative wire to the switch.

This!

Edit: Now I see the link. Should have read all the posts first before posting myself. :p

Nice, really nice. I love these old metal tubes.

How do you filled the GITD powder in the tube?

Thanks to everyone for the link to the reflector. Now nitroz we know how big the reflector is (huge) can you maybe show us a picture with it in your hand? Edit. The light that is.

I love this, great job!

Foy has special place in his heart for the Sportsman. That's what I'm holding in my avatar.

It’s IV line cut to size. I then super glue the first end and fill it with Glowinc V10 powder. Once it is full I add more super glue to the second end and connect them together. I can make any size I need.

Thanks everyone for the comments. This is truly a sleeper and one of my favorite light as of now.

Here is the light in my hand. If you look close you can see the owner.

Here is the XML2 on copper

And here is a look down the tube where I created the stop for the 26650 lithium.

I could not skull that light full off my favorite beverage. Well maybe I could but I would be a mess afterwards. It looks bigger than an olympic torch. Thanks for the rest off the pictures. Again very nice and well executed.

You’re welcome!

I hope this gives someone sitting on the fence about modding this light the courage and confidence they need to go ahead and modify their light.

It is now a truly useful flashlight and a scorcher compared to what it use to be.

As with all old lights like this(Anglehead), the switch is the worst part. This one works better that the anglehead when slid all the way forward, but the momentary does not make good contact all the time. My anglehead even when slid all the way forward flickers.

I have modified many angleheads, knock-off and original and they all do this. :frowning: I need to figure out how to make it better.
