Are wireless charging flashlights possible?

I’m guessing they are possible, since we have wireless charging cell phones and toothbrushes. It probably adds another layer of unneeded risk to charging I suppose. Someday it might grow to be common.

Likely needs to be plastic over the coil. Needs good alignment with charging pad. Neo magnets could auto-align it. Like the Palm Touchstone.
At that point why not just do magnetic aligned gold charging contacts? I’ve been planing it (been planing forever tho). Could be disabled when contact is broken if needed for safety.

I wouldn’t mind a plastic light with wireless charging, if it looked appealing. ABS is pretty tough. Something in white with diffused green or blue LED standby/charging LED could go well with eneloopy and friends. Ultra-clean, ultra-modern! :bigsmile:

Actually, wireless charging is not that complicated. A simple royer type resonance converter could be built on a rainy sunday. Add a couple of sundays to get some useful functionality (standby with auto load detection, reasonable efficiency etc.) An Oscilloscope would be helpful though. (something like a 20MHz analog scope would be fine, and they go for only a couple of bucks these days.)

But there could be build an contact charging with two/three contacts on the outside with more effiecency…that would be better…

I really don’t get this wireless charging thing, it’s impossible with far distance(think of the high energetic e field what would be necessary,decreases with r^2….)
And if it needs to make contact anyway and needs to be charged for longer time than it is held by a cradle anyway…??so no real advantage here…

I wonder that nobody here has butchered his toothbrush and build a led in it…
Wireless charging,switch, case everything is there just switch the motor with a driver and put an led on top….

I see some limited use like in waterproof housings you don’t want to open to much to not wear them out or something like that. (Or something like a really tiny complete cast in resin keychain light)
It’s somewhat cool, that would be also a valid reason.
Besides that, I would always prefer some decent quality connectors.

The adalit lights which are used by firefighters/mineworkers for example are not only waterproof they are also explosion safe…they are charged through two metal contact on there surface. The cradle is the charger…
Not to mention that these lights are the expensivest lights I know for the small amount on light they produce.
The cradle are equal with the high cost but it works flawlessly.

You are right the coolness factor is a good reason.

I am a bit scared of the devices which are glued together so that nobody can open them without destroying, and that will come more with time…
I like to open things up and have a look inside.

Maybe not anything. But it’s possible to adapt some decades old technology to products in which it hasn’t been used yet. Especially if the products are flashlights. Flashlight companies seem to still have no clue about in what ways ordinary technology can improve their products.
