Best MT-G2 flashlight -modded or not- so far?

A few MT-G2 flashlights (multi 18650) are around. Which in your opinion is the best choice? Modders please guide us also to your host/driver combination for this led.

I have test run this in a mockup in a 3C Defiant for a couple off hours and its a flood off light. The driver is the 5amp 3 mode from IOS. I may swap this but undecided as yet. This driver does have a slight pause between mode changes but the couple I have used running 3 or 4 26650 batteries have been 100% reliable unlike other high amp drivers I have used.

I’m going to try this driver in an l2 host with fet switch, diy pill, 2x 18350 imr and aspheric lens. Heatmanagement and runtime, who cares? It’ll be a dragster!

I don’t have any of the manufactured MT-G2 lights, but I have an MT-G2 in a DST pill, direct-driven with 2x16340s or 2x18350s in a clone A8 body. There’s a 0.5 ohm 3W resistor in series for current limiting. It’s very bright, and does throw, but not as well as my HD2010 with the EAST-092 driver. I’ve posted some info/pics on garrybunk’s huge DST thread.

I also have another one with an MT-G2 emitter and the 3.5 amp driver from IOS from a pre-order on “the other forum”, which I’m still waiting on. That will be in the new T10B host from IOS. From the beamshots that the builder posted, this light will be pretty floody.

my torchlite host build is the best, simply because I built it and its mine lol :bigsmile:

convoy l2 with lck-led 5a driver and mt-g2 will make a nice build too.

I was thinking building this setup but the total cost (80:money_mouth_face: is very near to rich & famous MT-G2 flashlights.

I'm doing the same thing with the T10B! Wait'n on the host and parts from IOS now - oh crap! I see you are having it built for you. This one will actually be for myself. I built a T10 XM-L2 U2 and really love the quality of the host - it's superb!

I think comfychair’s S1100 seems to be the best one yet. I haven’t put one in a flashlight, just a Defiant xml spot light. Unless you’re looking for a floody light, get a host that produces the narrowest tightest you can afford. The big MGT2 emitter will make the hot spot many times bigger. I’m playing with the idea of putting one in the DST like ohaya because I have that light already. It has a fairly tight beam and good heat sinking.

The spotlight I put it in had such a tight beam, that it was not a useful light with an xml. The MGT2 turned it into a beast that throws a big hot spot very far and has a nice usable low level spill. My MGT2 is dedomed though. Before dedoming, the light had both throw and flood, but that may have been due to the emitter being positioned deeper in the reflector.

I have driven it with 2 18650’s and 6 4/3 Ni-mh using the cheap Manafont 3T6 driver and using AMC7135’s directly. Both work great with the emitter.

then an mt-g2 on 20mm star and I would probably go with the lck-led driver I used in my torchlite, really nice low, dammed bright high and at 6a between two cells, your not over stressing anything too much.

I rebuilt mine with the DRY driver and a Noctigon which seems to improve the drive current and thermal handling. The Cutter aluminum PCBs just didn’t do the job.
Getting around 2500 lumens OTF and 39kcd throw on fresh Pana NCR18650PDs.
I prefer the ZY-T08 over the in-line 18650 builds because of the shorter length.
The T08/T13 reflector works well with the MT-G2.
The overall cost is right around $50 which is lower than any off-the-shelf MT-G2 light (not quite as low as the Flomotion build, but output is higher)
Build is comparatively difficult because of the battery carrier change. Not really hard to do, but a little more work compared to a R86 T13, the Flomotion special, or the FlashPilot X7 emitter swap.
All things considered (cost, size, output, effort), the T08 gets my vote. :beer:

Voting would be a hard decision for me. All of the builds have unique strengths. I especially like the reflector size and battery capability of FlashPilot’s X7 and the compact good looks of Relic’s T08. One light that I think hits all the notes for me would be Comfy’s S1100, but it is not listed. I can not find a build thread for it. There use to be one. Here is a beam shot thread.

Thank you for finding that thread. Yeah, I would vote the S1100 as the best due to beam profile, battery capacity, and good looks. Cost is high though.

To me, a spotlight does not qualify as a flashlight. The litmus test is, “Would I carry the light on a hike?”. I can see myself carrying all of the listed lights, except for my spotlight. I would want a belt or shoulder holster for a couple of the listed lights, but I would still take them. A spotlight is great to keep in the house, car, and boat. I like having one nearby for when I need/want big light.

Maybe this thread should get some spotlight in OP too.

Out of the lights above I prefer the one Relic38 has modded. Combination of size, output and price is nice.

I want to show you my p60 mt-g2 mod with the 5A FL-2 driver from lck-led.com.

First I lapped the copper mcpcb

I had to dremel the batterys contact plate because it was 21mm and it didn't fit into the battery tube of the l2p body.

I took ground from the above board in order to reach the pills surface (the inner tube is anodized, except the dropins housing).
The core was filled with thermal paste, the outer rim with epoxy, to ensure stability.

The pill is a 22mm copper bushing i had to notch because it was too large in diameter. Now it jams to the heads housing.

To reflow the star to the pill was a gyros pita, particulary to center it. While reflowing the diode slipped from the star.

It's a standard p60-smooth reflector i removed the thread from with a cutting disc.

Also the hole i enlarged to the width of the mt-g2 dome.

The dropin fully assembled. Unfortunately I hit the dome with the pliers once, you can see the cuts in the mirrors reflection.

I'm really happy with the result. The head gets hot within seconds, a good sign for quick heat transfer. Tailcap-readings are 5,31 Ampere with fully charged efest 18350 imr's (4,15V, i don't understand why they cannot be charged to 4,2V with the miller ml-2 charger). The beam quite has a hotspot despite the small reflector, but all in all it is mainly a wall of light. As a middle range exploration thrower really usefull.
