Review: Sunwayman D40A 4xAA XM-L2 Flashlight

I have not measured run time, and the cells are four in series.

I don't like the new price.

I decided to try this link:
https://support.fasttech.com/general/VOLM/1374600
The bulk price turned out to be much lower. In my case, the quote was for a bulk quantity that can be described by this mathematical expression: sin(π/6)*[√4] + (3!)^2 - (46656)^(1/3)

I sent in a request for the large quantity of (1)….we’ll see what they come back with!

(I have no idea about what your equation means, but hope it = (1))

Thanks for the review.

But guys, please don't blurt out the price per piece of you bulk orders

No problem.

+1

So nice. Exterior fit and finish is awesome. No rattle.

One problem. I can’t seem to activate the strobe reliably. The instructions say a double-click will do it. I have tried every speed of double click. No go. However, it will go into strobe sometimes instead of the police strobe, with a press and hold. The press and hold will also sometimes yield mode shifts THML.

I am not particularly irritated at this point, because all the other functions operate as described. Also, I don’t have much need for the basic strobe.

That’s odd, mine works exactly as described and expected. Maybe you have a finnicky mode button? If you single press it does it change modes every time? Just checking to see if it is intermittent or something.

It cycles the modes properly, but I have to give it a second after each mode change. If I immediately try for a subsequent mode change, I don’t get it.

Edit: After playing with the light a bit, I have found this procedure gives me a reliable strobe (for now anyway):

  1. Turn light off.
  2. Turn light on, and immediately give a double-click on the mode button. If I wait a bit, it’s less reliable, but can be had.
  3. The switch seems to be sensitive to the speed and pressure of the double-click. I think I’ll be OK once I’m familiar.

I got my D40A today. Just playing around with the UI. I like how you can start out in moonlight mode, but I hate how it goes from moonlight > low > turbo > med > low. Wish the UI was smart enough so if you start on moonlight mode it would go moonlight > low > med > high > turbo with each press of the mode button. I can see why it does it the current way. It’s just set to cycle in one direction, going from brightest to next mode down till each reaches low then repeats starting from turbo.

It would be so much more intuitive if could cycle either way depending on whether you start in moonlight or turbo. If you start in moonlight you obviously would want to cycle up in brightness. If you start in turbo you can only go down in brightness. Three dedicated buttons would probably be the best in such situations.

I just found this nice video review by selfbuilt:

Based on some reports form other members I retested the standby and lockout current draw.
Standby: First five seconds, 1.4mA. After, 11uA.
Locked out: First five seconds, 1.4mA. After, 313uA.
Tested at 5.5V.
Review updated.

Thanks for the updated figures! How are you finding the buttons now? Are they prone to being turned on inadvertently?

The buttons are fine for me. When it is in my laptop bag, I lock it out with the tailcap. When just digging it out of my pocket, so far, I have not activated it inadvertently. I can see how that would be possible though.

There’s one other neat feature that you might have missed and I haven’t seen mentioned anywhere (but may have just missed it). If you double click the power switch from off then it will jump straight into maximum mode regardless of the previously used and memorised mode, this means instant access to either moon, max, or strobe, a very well thought out UI in my opinion

I noticed that the other day, and keep forgetting to update it. Yes, I like that feature. It even keeps the original mode memory when you turn it off. It acts like a temporary turbo operation. Very nice feature. There are a lot of modes directly available with one action.
Edit: Review updated. Thanks!

It’s interesting you should say that, I could have sworn that mine used to behave like that, but now it remembers the Turbo mode even if accessed in this way. I can’t work out if I’m doing something differently…

I’m still thinking of getting one but in the winter I don’t want to fiddle with a holster case or lockouts, but I don’t want it to just turn on in my handbag either.
