Tear Down of the 2AA Defiant light - Question about driver

tallboybass: Maybe print out my pic above and get HD to pricematch themselves. I took my receipt down today and got $4.32 back  I’ve done 3 or 4 price matches with them at the service desk very recently and didn’t have any problems with getting them to price match what I wanted.

That’s right. I had a problem with HD recently concerning replacement windows. They wanted to charge for “Custom order” prices for window sizes that were for sale on their website.“………until I made them price match their own website!

I’ve done that with Guitar Center and Musician’s Friend…they’re basically the same corporation but GC didn’t want to match MF’s total out-the-door price!

I am in a HD almost every day. I will know within a day or 2 of them going on clearance and will post the pic.
BTW, the Bloomfield HD just sold their first 5C Defiant 2 days ago. I never bought one, but was gifted one by a friend that bought one and liked it so much he gave me one. Apart from needing 5 C cells to run, I like it. That one too will go on clearance.

I guess you’re going to use the inventory checker? #469 #473 off hand but there were also others that were out of town where I got them to also do a price match to Costco’s MagLite combo pack. I got 3 at 2 different stores  These lights though, do not show up on their website. Hope this helps.

I was wondering what the max voltage these lights could do in their stock form. I was thinking the light could do a 14500 with a dummy cell mebbe? Wonder if would be brighter? Then, possibly 2 14500? That would prolly poof the light tho lol So, what say you all?

Two FLs in a package for $10? That’s something!

Went to HD to buy some more before they take them off the shelf (heard the discontinued rumor) Seems to be true- none on shelves or displays and apparently they are totally off the computer inventory. That sucks, I was going to buy a couple more packs!

lightning210: Was just in Country Club & 360 freeway HD in Mesa tonight and they had a bunch right at the entry/return desk… Actually, all 3 lights were there. 2aa, 3c thrower, 5c. Hope this helps.

I will be heading that way tomorrow!! Thx, AB!

These where still 2 for $20 when I looked last week, haven’t been out since last Tuesday.

It threading into the sipik makes the light worth it

I’m pretty sure both mine have next mode memory. I didn’t wait more than ten seconds between tries though.
I gifted one to a coworker but if it threads on to my sipik clone I may get a couple more and Frankenstein these some.

I don’t like the color difference between the hospot and spill. It’s minor but its very yellow around the edge of the hotspot

Try taking out the emitter centering ring. It smoothed the transition from the hotspot to spill nicely in mine. I imagine the reflector coating conducts electricity. So you may want to lightly sand the bottom if you have any contact points (like the polarity marks) that it would rest on.

@lightning210 Did you go buy ALL the rest of the lights at the Mesa store??? I went in there today, thought I’d get me a couple more. There was a big box at the front there by the returns desk. Heh, the box was gone today and just 2 were left! I bought those…

I may give that a try, thanks 4wheeler

I took out the centering ring on mine as I got the same yellow around the hot spot and now it’s much nicer. Thanks ImA4Wheelr! Hard to get the reflector centered again while screwing it back down. I also tried it w/no reflector. It makes a very pretty little room flood

Glad to hear it helped. You’re right about it being harder to center. The reflector has room to squirm around. It would probably be better to cut or file down the height of the centering ring. That would maintain the height of the reflector. Just not something I imagine I will get around to anytime soon.

Might Check Your HD Store, Mine had these for 7.76

Yes there is an amazingly simple way to tell if a light has PWM and it doesn’t involve wavig screw drivers or anything “dangerous” like that. Just uses your camera phone.

Hold the lens of the flashlight up to the lens of the camera phone and turn the light on, if you see lines across the screen like window blinds its PWM, no lines = no PWM. The reason for this is the frequency of the PWM conflicts with the cameras refresh rate (shutter speed). A cheap/old digital camera and/or a CCTV security camera should do it too. (Even works with iphone 4 & 5)

How about shining it at a computer’s fan?

That will work too. And I believe the slower the fan appears to spin, the lower the PWM.
