18250 battery?

Hi,

I know that there’s a 14250 (rechargeable li-ion) battery, but is there such a thing as an 18250 rechargeable li-ion? If so, can anyone provide a link where I might buy some?

I have a light that I’m trying to mod, but it normally takes 3xAAA in a small carrier. A 14500 fits in, length-wise, but it’s a liitle loose - just mentioning that to convey the size of the tube, so I think that 2x18250, if there is such a thing, would be about right.

Anyway, I put a 3up emitter, so I need > 4.2 V DD, so I figured 2 x 18250s would fit and give me somewhere like 7.2 - 8.4V, which I hope may be able to power the 3up (I tried the 3up with 2x18650 outside the light, and that worked - probably not optimal, but it did light pretty bright).

If there is no 18250, I’m going to go with 2x14250, and some kind of tube adapter I think.

I made my 3-AAA light into an 18500 with a plastic insert. The 18500 battery fits perfect. Light works very well like that.

I was probably not clear. I need about more than 4.2V, thus 2x18250 or 2x14250.

Two of These will give you 12V and 50.4mm length.

Thanks for the links, but I’m looking for rechargeables. Again, I know that there are rechargeable 14250s, which might be my best bet. Even with 2x18250, if they even exist, they’d be a bit too small, diameter-wise.

Anyways, I'm pretty sure you will get more runtime and brightness from one 18500 than from two 14250.

Do you know how the LEDs are wired? Or a link to where you bought them from? I have a feeling one battery is all you need.

Ok, here we go, but don’t laugh (please):

- The 3 emitters are wired in series, with a 0-ohm resistor in between

  • So, I need ~9V to power them on (I’ve tested with 2x18650, with magnets and test leads)

I want to build a small light that uses that, no driver, i.e., DD, because the 1st “host” I’m trying is a Defiant 3xAAA, and the “pill” is tiny, depth-wise.

I actually got this working on a first try, using the original 3xAAA carrier, but using 3x10440, where I pre-discharged the 10440s to each about the same voltage. It worked, and boy, was it bright, but I melted part of the domes off of 2 of the emitters on the 3up (the smoke coming out was the first sign that something was wrong :laughing:.

I originally was hoping to use something like a 3xAAA boost driver that would put out about 9V at 1amp, because that is what the Luxeon spec sheet seems to show as the typical, but I haven’t able to find one yet, so DD it was.

If anyone has any ideas about such a boost driver, please let me know?

Meanwhile, I’ve been able to get the 10440 voltages down to ~3V, and that original “sacrafial lamb” 3up seems to be running without smoking, but I haven’t run it for very long… just long enough to go “Wow” :)…

I still need to figure out how to get the original lens and reflector out of the host (posted on another thread about the Defiant 3xAAA), and then, I have to figure out how to assemble a Carclo 3up lens, and then it should be ok, I hope.

So, there you have it. I guess that I’m still new enough to say that this was a dumb thing to try, but I didn’t know any better :).

P.S. I do have some 14250s coming in (from lighthound.com). They’re nominally 3.6V, so 2x14250 should give me 7.2V, but I’m not sure if that’ll even light up the 3up.

Also, for the DD, I think that I really should put a small ohm resistor in series with the emitter, but that pill is (again), tiny, and the higher wattage resistors all dwarf the pill.

@ohaya, ok all good with the power source. I was just getting confused about a 3 up and 2 li-ions.

Any suggestions, esp. for a driver? I’d really like to be able to squeeze a tiny boost driver with some modes in there!

Edit: Another thought: I’m wondering if 3 x LifePO4 10440s in the carrier might work, DD. They’re nominally 3.2V, so 3, would be like 9.6V, which would be just a little high for the 3up emitter. I just ordered a set of 4 from FT, we’ll see how that goes.

Still not sure how to secure the Carclo, but I’ll how that goes when they come in.

remove the jumpers, wire the led’s
parallel off an imr 14500 or 18500.

I originally considered that (paralleling the emitters), but while removing the jumpers wouldn’t be a problem, I didn’t think I’d be up for soldering the wires to parallel the 3 emitters myself.

Plus, reading through the Luxeon data spec sheet, the individual emitters are spec’ed for maximum 700 mA (1000 mA maximum) and different minimum/maximum voltage ranges based on bin, from 2.55/2.79V to 3.75/3.99V, but it’s not clear what bin the ones from ledsupply.com are, so I just took the “easy” way (relative to building) out, since the star is already setup for series.

If you look at Old-Lumens thread here:

the 1st post has some pics of the “pill”.

On the emitter end, that pill has a ridge, and the emitter board sits on top of that ridge.

From my pics above, the 3up board has 3 small holes, intended for screws, to attach it to the pill. I want to try using screws, but am wondering if I can just drill 3 holes in the ridge, and use some self-tapping screws to secure the 3up board to the pill? I’ve eyeballed the pill sitting in the light, and it seems like it’d be ok (i.e., I can see the ridge through the holes), but was wondering if anyone knows where I can get a small quantity of such small self-tapping screws?

I should change this to a “build” thread.

FYI, I have some posts on that O-L thread I linked above (again) showing what I did with putting a bottom on the pill.

Also, I received the Carclo 3up lenses, and they are really tiny, esp. height-wise, so I’m not sure how to get them to work with that Defiant AAA host/body. Because of the short height, when the optics are seated on top of the emitter, the front of the optic is way back from where the lens on the Defiant goes. I was thinking maybe shorten the head part by cutting it, but then there’ll be no ledge on the inside of the head to secure the lens :(.

I think that I need to find a host that has a very short distance from the front of the pill to the lens :(. I have one of the Small Suns that was suggested, and will how that works, but I think that’ll be the same problem. I also have an L2M coming in, to see if that might work, but have a feeling that that’ll be a no-go also.

Edit: BTW, I think where I ended up with this “build” right now is to use 3x10440 LifePO4 batteries in a 3xAAA carrier. I’m waiting for some 10440 LifePO4 batteries from FT now, but in the meantime have tested with 3x10440 Li-Ion batteries, partially drained, and the emitters seem to fire up ok, really bright, and not overheating as far as I can see. Also have several new 3ups coming :)…
