I want a Dremel...need help...too many choices. (Purchase Complete)

Hmmm. I had it in my cart and was ready to check out, and decided to read some of the reviews. Now I’m nervous.

The Proxxon 38481 caught my attention too… overall the reviews are good.

Hmmm, I need an air compressor too, which one first?

Does the Proxxon accept Dremel accessories? This feature is on many of the Dremel copycats. Based on the front end in the picture, it does not accept threaded Dremel accessories. May not be a deal-breaker, but it is a nice option to have.

Reading the reviews, and some of them mention that Dremel bits work just fine.

Dremel 8200 cordless uses LiIon, battery charge time 1 hour, it is variable , lots of power , handles lots of jobs , battery is decent , run times decent , used it for cutting mostly and grinding.

Sorry, wasn’t talking about the bits. I’m talking about the various extension and adapters that can be added on to a Dremel.

There are some youtube videos on it, but I haven’t had time to watch any yet.

Most dremel accessories wont work with the Proxxon because the Dremel has threads under the plastic thing in the front while the Proxxon is just round. But most of the Dremel accessories are just a little above cr*p, so.. :D

But there are adapters for both to use in a standard drill press.

As moderator007 explained, Proxxon is another league. You cant even rate Proxxon and the rest on the same scale.

Dremel bits work. Those are usually 3.2mm, the Proxxon comes with a set of different collets from 1mm to 3.2mm. There's also a three jaw keyless chuck. A little cheaper is the Proxxon FBS, its also good, but if you go big bucks, take the IBS. ;)

Thanks everyone. I went ahead and ordered the Proxxon IBS/E.

Good choice. Have fun with it.

You might buy the flexishaft later on.. and a lot more of tools. ;D

Yes, it is a great tool and I would take it over the Dremel any day. The housing feels so much more sturdy and yet compact. Concentricity and running smoothness are also better and stay better in use.
It really is a shame these things are so expensive overseas. The IBS is like 70€ here on amazon and de FBS usually goes for about 50€. For that money, I would not even think about touching one of the other tools.

Yeah, the flexshaft is really worth it’s money!
I borrowed one once and want it so badly since then.

I hope you enjoy it Ouchyfoot.
Let us know what you think of it, or you could do a review.

Ouchy, link to what you ordered? I’m interested in that rig.

I ordered from Moderator007 s Link on Amazon.com. With taxes and everything, it came to about the same as the best prices I could find, and they were kind of sketchy about what comes with it. The total was $152.91, some of the import fee deposit could be returned. The best I found on eBay came to about the same with shipping.
The same one on Amazon.ca is $215 before taxes.

Thanks Ouchyfoot, Probably hold off for now due to budget.
I was hoping maybe you found a non-gouging Canada-based reseller (fat chance of that).

My Proxxon has shipped. I got the tracking info. Shipper is Landmark Global, never heard of them. I wonder if they hand it off to someone else at the border. Anyway, its in Michigan, only a few hours away.

Mine shipped from Hickory NC. If I had known that before hand I could have just drove there and picked it up.
Takes about a hour from my house. Mine may have not had the same supplier as yours but I did buy it on Amazon and the price looks to be the same even after a year.

Congratulations, you will not be sorry. I was looking round for a Dremel and found a Ryobi, I looked at the Proxxon but it was way out of my budget.
Enjoy.

Just a quick question, are all Proxxon series good?

some seem to be pretty cheap... but it looks like they are only used for small jobs.

I can only comment on the IBS/E but from what I have read from others their other power tools are of good quality too.
Like all things though, I’am sure sometimes there is a lemon in the bunch.
They are supposedly made in Germany, from what I have seen it maybe only the power tool line. The do have other products that are imported.
