SMILING SHARK 938, 60mm convex lens light. Anyone ever tried this one for a mod?

I had pretty much given up on MT-G2’s for throw but I wonder if this might actually work. Has anyone had one of these? Does it have a solid pill? It looks like it has a 60mm convex lens that just might be very interesting with 2500 lumens under it. I suppose if worse comes to worst I could fill the pill in but what a nightmare really.

so thats probably like a 55mm aspheric in that? looks interesting for a easy cheap thrower mod. i like the fact it can be one or two cell

Yah, probably a 55mm aspheric. It does look very interesting. I looked around and couldn’t find any real info on it. I have been talking back and for the with Jack who runs the site and I might have to ask him what it is exactly. Probably though I’ll have to order one to find out. I doubt they have anything in stock. I ordered a 15x cree from them the other day and it took them two days to get it in shipping. So not too bad, kinda like Wallbuys I guess. It’s the same guy who runs http://www.izlight.com/ or at least the same e-mail. Both sites have some lights that I don’t see anywhere else.

be sure to post what final cost after shipping is

+1

OK I would imagine it will be a total of $30 or so total. This same light is for sale on ali-express for $31

If I do buy it I will probably bundle it together with another light or two after the 1st. My budget is already shot this month.

I will definitely be buying one to try it out!

That light is major cool! I want one.

MTG2 is going to produce a VERY ugly spot. Someone stuck one behind an aspheric here and it looked terrible. Besides, the surface brightness is likely too low to work well under all but the largest lenses.

Thanks for the heads up on the MT-G2 and aspheric, I’ll have to see if I can find that post. I also haven’t found them very good for throw. If it has a solid pill it will most likely be getting a de-domed XM-L2 U2 anyway. If not it’s going to be a lot of work filling the pill and trying to lap it smooth and flat, probably worth it anyway.

Any thoughts on if this is a twist or slide zoom focus light?

I’m guessing twist but it’s just a guess.

I thought that the lens in the pictures looked so flat, while you need a very strongly curved lens for a good aspheric. Then I found this link with some more pictures:

It looks like the projection of the led is done by two lenses, with the bigger one the one that can be adjusted. I'm not 100% sure but I think that affects the hotpot of the beam, it will behave like a flashlight with a much smaller aspheric lens.

It is an interesting design though, and I may be wrong here.

Thanks for that, I have seen this design before and unless it’s set up just right it doesn’t work well. I think I’m out on this one. Two lenses is two spots for it to lose lumens and makes it too hard to focus correctly.

the deal breaker for me is the sliding pill/emitter with fixed small lens. I have seen other lights that have the lens fixed with the emitter sittingon a sliding pill. this light appears to be constructed much the same. As far as i can tell if you rotate the “brass/copper” looking section the floating pill will move forward and backwards inside the light. This design is generally bad for heatsinking. oh well thanks for heads up on this light and the sleuth work to dig up more photos.
