Stock SP03 vs J-19 De-domed XM-L2 dry driver heavy wire resistance mods (beamshots)

It gets warm quick enough that you can tell the heat is transferring but it’s not getting HOT like other lights that are driven this hard. It’s a huge light with all kinds of places for the heat to go. This could probably be driven even harder than what it is without it being a big deal. But it’s driven plenty hard now. I don’t think that there is much if anything to gain from driving it any harder. A lot of energy would then get lost to heat for not much gain in lumens or throw.

nice upgrade. you know the numbers on this guy?

Nope but at the current I am running I would guess it’s at least 4,000 lumens and 200kcd that would be conservative. Of course that is going to be dependent on batteries because the DRY is direct drive. This is with 3 king kongs. Of course the extra heavy wiring helps a lot and this doesn’t have the battery carrier for that added resistance.

Not to go off topic or anything but does anyone know if the dry driver or any similar beastly driver would work on the SP03? In my opinion it is a nice light also but just needs driven harder. The J19 is a beast driven hard like this so I was just curious if this would be possible with the Solarstorm also.

Not without modding the battery carrier. I would also like to mod my SP03 but nothing comes to mind yet on how to do it. I think for now though I’m just going to live with it. It’s still a lot of light much more of course when you don’t compare it to a beast like this.

DRY driver would have a hard time to be fitted into the SP03, as DRY driver is designed for 3*18650 in series, while SP03 is 4*18650 in parallel. Additionally the SP03 is using electronics switch, not the mechanical switch as seen in DRY.

Completely different format.

wow i wasnt expecting those numbers. thats pretty impressive

Nice photos.

Thanks, although I have a long, long way to go to come close to all the impressive photo’s you have posted.

I think you have already caught me. That J-19 is probably 225K or more.

So it’s not warm in dangerous level quickly, right? It can maintain the temperature walking or overheats anyway?

I thinking to do a same mod in this light, but I got some trauma after my st-50 dimming @6A :_(

Ah, I forgot to thankyou for beamshots, very good and conclusive compare, the spill of j19 seems VERY intense

It doesn’t get dangerously warm at all I have not had it overheat once and I have taken it on some pretty long walks although I don’t leave it on high but that is more to conserve batteries. This driver does step down to high from turbo at 120seconds. Although High is still super bright.

WOW, this price is insane….

only U$49 :weary:

the j20 is much cheap also :open_mouth:

Yeah, but he put 3XML2s on Noctigon with a better driver into it to do those beam shots remember! Its driven crappy without mods apparently.

Oh damn, I forgot one thing, shenzhen have shiping charges :_(

It was too good to be truth :~

I went through the process on there to get a quote for the TR-J20 for shipping which they sell for $63.25 and unfortunately shipping basically kills any deal over any other store.

DHL: the total price is US$63.25+US$33.57=US$96.82
HK Post: the total price of the flashlight is US$63.25+US$37.03=US$100.28

The reason HK is more is because the package comes in at over 1.5kg’s. Although I have to admit, the service, responses and general communications from Shenzhen have been outstanding. Now I just need to justify adding another WOL torch since I already have an x100…

Yeah, shipping is TOO expensive, many lights are cheaper with excellent use like tr-a9-2, its sad (too sad for me, which pays R$2,40 for U$1 :_( )

So, I always have a reason to buy a stronger light: work (this doesn’t convince even me   ), walking in the dark, and the reason infallible: prepare for Armageddon, whatever it may be…… Blinding ET’s rocks alot

You are assuming a lot: who said Extraterrestrials see in our spectrum of light anyways?

for some reason I thought this was a cells in one chunky tube……now I looked it up, I’m even more excited to get my hands on it, I love my plunger lights.

Tube is still pretty chucky because it will take the 32650’s but not soup can sized. I just got another one in yesterday and took it outside stock and this is the sad part stock it’s only as bright as the SP03 is on medium. One of the things I like about this is that it’s not a battery carrier style so no extra resistance from the extra springs and easier to load and unload.

I just finished putting the MT-G2’s in the one I got yesterday. I let the resin I use set up for a day before I wire them up. They fit in the reflector fine but I had to file them a bit to fit on top of the pill. 9amp SST driver from IO will go in parallel with them after that.

I also ordered another J-19 from a different supplier it was a few bucks more but I’m curious to see if they have the same lame driver.

It’s a great host but man that driver makes it the worst buy out there for a big light if it’s left stock.
