Convoy M1: which warm tint?

I have been very impressed with the other Convoy torches I have owned, and after reading JohnnyMac’s rave review of the M1 , I thought I would try the M1 size as a handy half-way step between the compact S series and the excellent (but bulky) C8.

My other torches have been neutral white (usually XML T6-3C), which I find much more usable than the blueish cool white. However, after replacing all my caravan lights with NW LED strip, I have just finished adding some dimmer-controlled mood lighting in a warm white. I love it; apart from being v restful, it shows colours more clearly.

So my current thinking is that I should try a warmer white in my next torch. I find that warmer light better penetrates the damp in this climate, and I am not worried about the small loss in lumen-count. These XML lights are plenty bright enough.

However, I am not sure which tint to go for.

The two options are: T5-5C or T4-7C.

I am initially tempted to go for the T4-7C, as the warmest option available. But I haven’t found any comparison of the two tints, or photos of them … and although I have seen the very helpful guide posted on BLF by Scaru, it doesn’t show me what colour temperature to expect with each variant, or what the CRI is.

Can anyone give me any more info to help me decide?

You may find this chart helpful:

5C is a neutral btw. And its nice.

Buy from this seller instead.

See if he can put in this emitter if he can:

My favorite WW (if you are looking for proper warm), much nicer than a 7C in my opinion. With the 7C from FT, you dont even know exactly what you get, because they do not include the whole code. Usually they are quite yellow. Also, you can not know the CRI due to lack of info. And FT sett previous outdated generation emitters.

When that is said, all WW XM-L(2)s are 80 CRI typical if not slightly better.

The one from Simon (Aliexpress seller) are 80 CRI Minimum despite being the higest bin for that type of emitter.

+1

Sounds like a great option.

Thanks, Chloe!

I have seen that chart many times before, but that’s the first time I have seen a copy of that chart where the print is actually big enough to read

I think that 5c looks like nicest. Warm, but not orange

Thanks, I like that idea. An XML2 would be a useful enhancement, and the chart which Choloe posted suggests that the 7A1 is much less orangey than the 7C.

Yes, the 5C is much less "orangey ", because its neutral white. Its not Warm white.

But again, basically, all "5" tints are quite nice..

What is the tint on the ‘normal’ auto headlight?

This may help you. I don’t know the tint of my xeno but it is the cool white version.
I like the 7c tint, but it is maybe too much warm. I need another light to mod it with the 5B tint :stuck_out_tongue:

They are not all the same as far as I know, and what is "normal" these days anyway?

The tints with green line are the ones I own out of 2nd generation emitters (a few or not in flashlights at the moment and Im waiting for a few). This does not include MT-G2, Nichias, or various emitters that I don't not know the precise tint of , nor lights that have a combination of emitters. Its nice having lots of tints to choose from. 0:)

Thanks!

As I pay more attention to tints these days, it seems ‘most’ are a kind of green tint around here…Tulsa, OK, USA. Just wondering where that might fall on the chart.

That seller is Simon, who was very helpful, and in a quick series of messages he agreed to sell me the the M1 with an XML-2-T4-7A3 at no extra cost. So I placed my order, and will report back on how it works out.

Thanks again for the pointer.

Cool. I did not think about it when I answered you, but my Convoy M1 OEM D4 actually have the same emitter now.. :)

I hope you like it, looking forward to hear your impression. I like having warm white light from time to time. Especially when its from that emitter.

It looks like Simon also sells a T2 BTW, and the chart below from Scaru’s thread should also be updated with the T4 7A3 from Simon as well then:

For the record, I skipped adding the T2 7C1 to the LED database specs are so low. Its T2 and 80 CRI typical. You should be able to get T4 and 80 CRI minimum. Which the T 4 7A3 is.

Also, if you want a more yellow emitter. Then there is the 7D3 from IS, which is 90+ CRI.

I don't see why anyone would buy the T2 7C1 when you have those other two emitters to choose from at basically the same price.

@RaceR86

BTW, you were right in your previous comment on the other thread, that T4 5D2 is a great emitter. Sadly, IOS is out of them now, I think I was able to get the last three that he had. I will be grabbing more when they come available.

i perhaps bought the last one a few days ago
