Disable rich-text editing? (Also, bug when switching)

If you switch from plain text to rich text and back, you lose all your formatting - and this happens automatically if you try previewing a post you edited in plain text mode, or editing something you already posted, so you can’t preview or edit plain-text postings.
Is there a way to permanently disable the rich text editor so this doesn’t happen?
It’s painfully slow and ugly, breaks my spellcheck, forces my browser to use a font I can’t see, does really, really annoying things like think a newline should be a paragraph, and generally isn’t something I plan to ever use… but looking through my account options, I can see how to change emails and the like, but no way to change the editor. Am I overlooking an option somewhere?
Thanks,

Good question. I've noticed a few bugs with it myself, like spell-check no longer working, and parts of posts disappearing sometimes when smilies are used.

I post in plain text-when I hit "save," it goes into the RT editor and then posts. I wouldn't care if the RT editor was axed-I'd like to see nice WYSIWYG posting... but I'm not really complaining, 'cause I'm just grateful to have this forum!

There may be trivial issues, but Mr. Admin fixes them fast.

And this is a wonderful place to hang out.

Dieta thinks so too as she's a sensitive soul and feels it when my blood pressure starts rising. And that's from when I first met her 32 hours ago.

Thanks Mr. Admin! You are doing an excellent job.

You are worth a lot more than every penny I've paid. Especially as I've paid nothing

The rich text editor is slightly buggy, but I'm not getting the same problems you are. I don't lose formatting when switching, since all it does is give you the html, not transform it. I get <br>'s as newline, not <p>'s. If you're in firefox, right click to enable spell check, annoying but works.

Hi there Bushytails, thanks for mentioning this issue. I'm also not exactly enthralled with this WYSIWYG post editor. You can try the "Disable rich-text" link. But I am looking for another alternative to this post editor. Thanks for your patience!

Dorpmuller and Don, thanks very much for your gratitude! My pleasure.

AAAARRRRRGGGGHHHH, who pressed the self-destruct button on BLF? :-(

A few things that are broken due to that new interface.... 1. All text crammed into one stream, no line-feed (CR).

2. Smiley symbol doesn't work any more, except if you know them by heart :-(

3. Mouse-over functions for beamshots are gone.

4. Hyperlinks are now standard to open in the same window.

5. Posting-accidental-leaving-dialog warning can't be detected by Firefox, it just happened to me... twice.

6. Videos can't be embedded any more.

Overall a big step back to posting stone-age. Give us back the old module Mr.Admin.

P.S. : Hooray, old dialogue is back.

I think that I might have fixed some of the issues mentioned here.
Please give it a try now.

Thanks!

Everything back to normal. Thanks

And to everyone that is experiencing problems--- Firefox is the solution. Spell check works -> switching rich-text works... no problems here at all. Now I just have to convince my company to also use Firefox... and all will be good. And if they don't want to... there is always the usb stick version of Firefox.

Thanks Mr. Admin.

Actually I just changed the config to enable spellchecking by default. The devs of this editor don't like the native spellchecking (and they want to push people to buy their proprietary spellchecker plugin), so they explicitly disabled the native browser spellchecker by default.

Could somebody please check if the native IE spellchecker works? I don't have IE. Thanks!

As for <p> vs <br> with ENTER, here's the explanation why the devs don't like <br> by default:
http://tinymce.moxiecode.com/wiki.php/TinyMCE_FAQ#TinyMCE_produce_P_elements_on_enter.2Freturn_instead_of_BR_elements.3F

At any rate, I just tried the Shift+Enter combo to produce a <br>, and it seems to work well.

My biggest complaint about the editor is trying to post pics in a review. Half of them vanish when I save it then I have to edit and finagle it over and over until they all show up.

Write something in plain-text mode, and post it without previewing - it comes out formatted the way it was typed. Or, at least, it did yesterday, but not today. Click preview, or toggle to rich-text and back, and all your newlines are stripped, so it's one big blob. The WYSIWYG editor seems to like stripping newlines every chance it gets, which is annoying, as even making some html tweaks to something you composed in it means you have to deal with a giant ugly blob.

As to br's, I find their excuse that you can use paragraphs but eliminate the spacing with css to be... interesting. Whether that method was appropriate depends on the semantic meaning of the newline, but in any case, it's way, way, way more work than people typing forum postings should be expected to think about.

Sorry I can't seem to duplicate that behavior. What browser are you running?

I can’t get paragraphs anymore. All one block of text. IPhone safari. I’ll have to try it out on my confuser/chrome

I'm wondering if it isn't something with the crlf vs nl problem, but I can't find any way to force firefox to stick a (evil) cr into a text box to test it...
