I really want to buy one and mod it, but every time I go to pull the trigger, I think I could just as easily use a LED "D" Maglite and make just as good a thrower.

In your hands I would say stick with the Maglite. The Jacobs is fun but it’s not that good of a host really. It’s fun because of the focus you get out of a tiny emitter but man that beam is soooooo small. Sure it’s cool because you can get big lux numbers out of it but it’s not like a de-domed XM-L2 at 7amps now that would be a cool Maglite thrower.
A60 reminds me of the fable the Blindmen and the Elephant.
The hot spot is so narrow that it’s hard to tell what you are seeing.
I don't know about the beam, but I guess I'll see when I receive mine from aurabuy.

You can always put XML2 inside the Jacob… a standard straight swap with dedomed older XML (and nothing else) already gives 50kcd of big beam.
Now XML2 on copper, high amp driver or direct drive… ummmm I wonder what it’ll push.

Aurabuy supposedly shipped mine yesterday, obviously, they wont leave China for couple of days more.
I don’t have one so I had to order it. I hope it is a pure thrower. That’s why I got it.

My EDC/take with me lights have been so far Thrunite Ti and JetBeam BA20, also SK68 clone and Cree angle light(Fenix MC10/MC11 clone).
My first “thrower” lights were SK68 modded with 3xAA setup and 3xAAA(replaced with AA) zoomable cheapo headlamp.
Then I broke down and ordered my first lithium powered lights, C8 cheapies from Ebay, got two to use on my bicycle and they throw pretty well for what they are(barely hitting 1Amp at the tailcap).
So I have big hopes for Jacob :D!
I think it’s pretty “pure”. It reaches out very well, with hardly any spill. The spot is so small that the light is somewhat useless close in.
Sounds good. I want a tight hotspot with no spill. It makes searching for things far away in the dark possible. For example, I saw a coyote in my front yard and all I had with me was a Solarforce with a custom P-60 which was a nice 50/50 spill/flood in neutral tint. It’s great for all around use but when I went to spotlight the coyote, all the vegetation and pollen/dust/fog in the air reflected back at me and made the light worthless.
I want a beam that can be pointed at a specific area not something that throws a wall of light to bounce back at me. At pure thrower is far more useful than a pure flood light when it comes to hand held lights. In a headlamp, I want a pure flood to illuminate my field of view so I don’t have to move my head around.
I got mine yesterday, bought 2 of them. But these have way worse beam profiles! An “extra ring” and not as focused as the one i got from dx a year ago.
The dx has the paper disc but the wallbuys does not. So maybe they’re not really focused.
I have a couple of xp-es, maybe i’ll try a de-doming on one
