...which worked perfectly and assisted in centering the stock reflector. I didn't have to dig into my box-o-parts this time to get a properly-fitting reflector.
There’s a black paper insulator but like keltex, I use the same insulator gasket he posted.
I also need to solder the driver as it is also loose on the pill.
Can’t remove the tail cap. Might need a vise but no reason for me to force it right now.
Light blue switch cap and not protruding so no problem on tail stand.
Easy lego! Nice pocket torch.
I looked again this morning and you are right Keltex. It’s actually light green
mine. And thanks for confirming to me that the body/battery tube is the tailcap!
As planned, I built myself the first nichia 219 light with this host, a nichia 219 on 10mm star, and a 5*7135 driver from fasttech. It works great. I set it to 3 modes. the low is very usable being around 15-20 lm. The high is around 200lm (compared to trustworthy fenix LD20). The clickie feels good. The size of the host feels just right in hand. I prefer clickies much better than twisties, even for EDC.
The only complaint is that the isolation disk came with the host has a hole that is too big. It is about the same size as the opening of the reflector.
I just ordered one last night. I’m curious, does the reflector work well with a Nichia? I have a few 219s as well as a few CW XM-Ls, I’m leaning toward a Nichia at 1.5a or so.
I have had this host with a nichia 219 for about 2 months now and still loves it.
Just want to update that the anodization on this little guy seems really good. It has been carried in my pocket with keys and does not even have a scratch or ding yet. Definitely a lot stronger than solarforce L2m (Type II ?). This might have Type III.
Just got in two of these. One will be used for a TV-B-Gone, and I built an EDC last night with the other, using a XM-L U2 and a 4x7135 Nanjg 105C driver.
I found I couldn’t screw the pill far enough into the head to make room for the body to fully screw into the head. Ended up leaving the front O-ring out. Also took a while to get the reflector lined up inside, as it’s fairly loose.
After being lost by the local post office and found again, the DX reflector came in - and it sits quite nicely in the head.
But even with the new reflector, the O-ring/glass/pill/reflector stack is still too long to permit the body to screw all the way into the head. Once again I’ve left out the front O-ring.
Solder blobs are filed down, I’m using kapton table on the reflector for insulation, and the thickness of the wire insulation is probably the limiting factor now.
I s’pose I could file down the reflector or make the pill thinner somehow, or find another LED on a thinner MCPCB, but meh. I’d rather not have to modify a host to make it work. Though I s’pose you get what you pay for - most of my experience with cheap lights has been great and I’m probably expecting too much
Still gotta say I like the light and I use it a fair bit - it’s my “walk to the neighbors” / “take the dog out” flashlight. Gets the job done.
I still love this light! Its been my EDC ever since it was built! The 4 mode driver from the group buy of the A8’s is still perfect for this host in my eyes everything just works together like peanut butter and jelly!
