Sold out: $20 HD2010 & $15 Convoy C8 copper pills

Since I don’t have any C8s yet, can someone tell me if C8 Pills are standard? Is the Convoy pill exclusive to that model?

Don't change the HD2010 pill, but I want to note that the design effectively makes the internal battery tube length shorter.

By eliminating the driver retaining ring and keeping the same pill height, the driver doesn't sit as deeply. Fortunately it's not a big deal in the HD2010 because the tailcap threads are not anodized, so the tailcap can be unscrewed slightly if necessary. One potential benefit is that it allows the pill to be unscrewed a little for focusing purposes while retaining the original internal battery tube length.

Sorry, been missing this thread somehow so didn't post in the survey - didn't know bout it. I'm in for 4 Convoy C8 pills and 2 HD2010's - I would have indicated a stock C8 pill in copper would also have been of interest to me, just like VOB made in the 1st round -- the UniqueFire T20 pill was a perfect match for the standard UltraFire C8 pill. I would have liked to see the height of the HD2010 pill top raised ever so slightly from stock, which I think maybe VOB's did. If you take a stock HD2010, unscrew the pill by 1/2 to one full turn, that seems to be the optimum positioning of the LED and I've measured increased lumens and throw, but, of course the pill is loose at that point - never was able to work out a spacer but I suppose you could cut one out of sheet aluminum or copper. Also I noticed (sorry if it's been mentioned) that VOB's HD2010 pill has more threads than the stock pill so more contact - better ground, better heat sinking.

Think I saw a post with a link to a google doc to reserve? Look'n now... Edit: ok, submitted my 4 and 2 requests...

If I owned either one of these lights I’d be all over this.

Hhmm - are there any mechanical drawings posted showing measurements? From the pic, I'm thinking the total height of the copper pill is slightly less than the stock, so the resulting driver position in the battery tube would be the same - but I'm only guessing here -- hard to tell for sure from the pics. I know with VOB's pill, protected 26650's are very tight - too tight with the stock springs. Would love to run 26700's (MOLI) too but definitely don't fit, but it is nice the unprotected cells fit snugly. Best cell I found was the Powerizer highly recommended by Dale. I got a true tailcap measured 5A on a 4.9A Nanjg build in the VOB copper pill (350 7135's do a little better than 350 usually) with the Powerizer, very close 2nd was the SONY 50A 26650 cell, but the Powerizer has the big advantage of 3700 mAh vs. 2600 mAh.

Edit: Crap! Looked over the pics again and they seem to be the same height... Shortening the length for the batteries may not be so good.... Hhmm. Maybe VOB's did the same thing? Boy gotta check...

I am interested in some pills but I am a bit confused…I probably just missed a post. Is VOB manufacturing the pills or OL or a 3rd party machine shop? Is the design OL or VOB or MRsDNF? Where are they shipping from SK? What is the shipping cost to the US? With the number of C8 clones is there confidence this will be a universal fit?

Thanks!

Mike - I know it's not VOB's design, but I'm confused too about who's design, or who had input or gave help/assistance. The Convoy C8 pill is unique - as far as I've played/tested, you can't inter-change a "standard" C8 pill with the Convoy's - the threads don't match up. I'm quoting "standard" because I know there are exceptions, but I've inter-changed C8 pills, bought the brass ones from FT and LCK-LED and easily mounted them in UF C8's - sometimes needs a little playing with the driver vertical placement (adding a brass 17-17mm ring for example) but, basically they are inter-changeable, meaning they fit most C8's out there, not all though.

VOB's original T20 copper pill fits perfect in the UF C8's I have. I got my UF C8 bought from LightMalls running with VOB's T20 copper pill - does great!! AR lens, SS bezel - all decked out.

Down for 2 hd2010 as per google docs.

Best 26650?

Chris

Maybe that's cause for another slight revision. Make the threads a little longer. Then it can sit at normal height with more thread contact, or be raised a little without less thread contact than the original pill. Either way there will be more thermal mass, which I'm sure we'd all be happy about.

Just measured the stock pill vs. the vob copper pill, and if I'm correct, the driver sits 1.15 mm lower in the vob pill, meaning battery space is 1.15 mm less, which seems to make some sense in what I'm seeing with the cells I've tested. The stock pill is 2.7mm to 2.75mm down to the shelf the driver sits on, while the vob pill is 1.8mm, and best I could measure, the tightened position (lip) to the bottom edge is 12.75mm on stock, 13.0mm on the vob copper. The East-092 driver is the same thickness of a Nanjg at 1.55mm, so no difference there. The 1.15mm comes from: 2.7 - 1.8 + (13.0 - 12.75).

That’s the problem with spoken language, no doubt, someone has beaten you to the words of wisdom you have to share
True it is a little easier upon the ears btw.

In case it’s not clear, I appreciate the quality product being offered here, yet if it was not much more effort/$$$ to go that next step, I’d prefer that option, as I’d imagine many others here also would be
It was a friendly suggestion, not an ultimatum

Gotcha…

And yeah, I do see your point, but I don’t see how it could be done on the cheap. But then, I don’t see how this pill could be made for $20 either….

I’m back from school and am very impressed with the interest in these pills!

I’ll try to answer your questions individually:

Tom E- Thanks for you’re input. You’re one of the most experienced modding members here and we all appreciate your thoughts on this. I’ll try to raise the contact board height by 1-2mm so that it provides room for focus tweaking. I can count 5 threads on the sample, and I think VOB also has 5? I don’t think there’s room for more threads because it will interfere with the battery tube’s own threads. Got your response form as well.

cellguy- I’m working with a local machinist here to manufacture the pills. I’ll pick them up, package them individually at my home, and ship it from here. I was inspired by MRsDNF’s pill design but had to sit down with the machinist to design and nail down those measurements. Base shipping is $3 and $1 for each additional pill and add $3 if you want tracking to anywhere in the world. As Tom E said, I’m using a Convoy C8 as my target host so these Convoy C8 pills may or may not be compatible with other C8 hosts.

Here’s a quick comparison photo to show the clearance for 18350/26650 cells:

The copper pill actually seems to be in par with the stock aluminium pill in terms of driver positioning, so longer Moli cells will be able to fit.

Since we have 45 units, I’ll go ahead and make the order.

I got 27 for HD2010 and 18 for Convoy C8.

How does 40 for HD2010 and 30 for Convoy C8 sound?

Hopefully those who get these copper pills will get impressed and make others get these hosts as well. :stuck_out_tongue:

I would be in for a few c8’s, but the convoy c8’s are sub optimal for my purposes, so will wait for standard if possible.

HD2010 seem to be far more popular, I guess because they can deliver more amps?

Chris

The main issue with “standard” C8’s is that there is no original C8. They’re copies of copies of copies and it’s a headache to see which pills fit which hosts.

I’m open to suggestions for specific C8’s though. The Xin-TD V4’s look pretty nice. Which C8 fits your purpose?
HD2010 offers a wider reflector and thus is a heck of a thrower. Combine that with high amps from a beefy 18650 or a Moli 26650 cell, and you got yourself a winner.

I’ve just returned from the machine shop and put a down payment for 40 HD2010 and 30 Convoy C8 copper pills.

Here are the changes (from the samples) that are going to be applied:
-The HD2010 pill’s surface will be flat, not drilled(as seen in the photos). The positive and negative lead holes will be diagonally cut from the edges of the 17mm driver slot to the 20mm LED PCB contact plate.
-Increase the LED PCB contact plate by 1mm for the HD2010 so that the LED would be correctly focused.

-The top height of the Convoy C8 pill will be increased by 1.5mm to increase thermal mass without compromising proper assembly.

The machinist quoted 8-10 days for the preparing and machining process from today.

I’ll be taking payments in a couple of hours.
