The capacity of the 3100 panasonic cells from 4.2v to 3v at 1amp is around 2800-2850mah according to panasonic. Don has measured 2775 and 2735 to 3v on the first cycle of my version of these cells. The capacity can be increased at higher current draws and higher temperatures during measurement, I would also expect capacity to slightly increase after a couple of charge cycles. There is also of course extra capacity from 3v down to 2.5v.

Remember, the other high capacity li-ions by AW an Redilast (2900s) are also measured down to 2.5v so even if you don't see full capacity with these you will see the the same proportion of the rated capacity as with those too, so still more.

The numbers have been slightly edited upon re-examination of the Panasonic data-sheet, as it is a discharge curve so the numbers are an approximation by me.

As received voltage was 3.76v

Came off the charger at 4.19v

Discharged at 0.5A = 2730mA @ 3v and 2900mA @ 2.5v , This is the result for first charge + discharge ..

Currently charging for 2nd go around , but it takes nearly 6 hours to run a 0.5A discharge , and I expect it will take a while to charge as well .

Still , an excellent result ! considering my Samsung 28A [ 2800 rated ] discharged 2488mA @ 3v cut off .

Arrived yesterday, thanks! No time for testing yet, but resting voltage is at 3.9 a tad high but no real problem. Anyone done a 10A discharge on these yet? I am very curious how they will hold up compared to AW IMR 18650 for an SST90 build. Not sure if my iCharger 106B+ will even handle that kind of load without an external resistor (and I haven't figured out how to do that yet either.)

I try very hard to be honest, but sometimes I don't have the equipment to do the best tests possible.

Beyond 1A discharge my tests aren't reliable - as in not one of my chargers can give reliable results past 1A. Can run a datalogging meter on current past that on the rare occasions I boot the only box running Windows around here. Last booted it in March.

But integration is not one of my skills. I last had to solve multi-variable differential equations in 1982. And have exactly no wish to remember how to do it 30 years later.

I don't think I would try a 10A discharge test! Panasonic recommends 6.2A as max. The 106B+ is rated at 20w max discharge, something like 170w with a external resistor the setting should be under discharge+. I have found on mine it will go really quickly up to 4A then slow way down and sometimes take 10 minutes to get to 5A. I'm not sure if this is a battery or a charger thing?

I was reading on a RC board that the 106B+ has some pretty small resistors so you may want to wait till you get an external resistor setup before you try any big discharge tests.

Yah, wish I had sprung for the 206B now. Hobby king shows up to 7A discharge current, but like you say, limited to 20W. Have to look more into using a 50W external resistor.

A 2C discharge rating seems rather conservative to me. If I had the equipment I would seriously consider a 3C test, but I guess not at this time :) I thought I saw the original NCR18650 2900 drawing nearly 9 amps in an sst90 build.

Well, no time for even basic discharge tests again until at least Sunday. Boo. Real life.

I've already done a couple 5 Amp discharges of these (with good results). This afternoon I started a 0.6A discharge hoping that I could get around 3000 mAh (Panasonic states a minimum of 2950mAh). Well I got 3100mAh on the nose! Holy moly.

I'll be doing more tests and posting the results in my battery graph thread next week.

2C is generally considered the safe limit for the discharge of LiCo cells.

I took it down to 2.5v(+ or - .02v) and AFAIK it didn't kick in.

EDIT: After looking at the graph, I can't be sure. It may have kicked in right at 2.5v.

We just ordered another shipment of batteries... We also ordered some new high drain 18650 Panasonic batteries. These should be some really good performers! 2250mAh and 10A max discharge rate. They are manufacture rated for multi cell use and have very long life!

These cells where originally developed for power tools and medical equipment. Like all Panasonic batteries I would expect them to come in very close to their rated output. We should be getting them in within the next couple weeks hopefully sooner

PS... If anyone out there wants to review these batteries let me know, you will have to be able to do high drain tests and post graphs. Thanks

Its like saying I could buy 4 Ford Escorts for the price of 1 BMW... Their really not in the same league. You will also note I am selling them for much less than the Redilast 3100's and less than the AW 2900. But thanks for the input!

and i agree with the escort vs bmw scenario. the difference is i can have one tf in my light and three back-ups in my pocket, but i cannot drive one escort and have three back-ups in the trunk. again, to each their own.

The Escort isn't a trustfire flame. It's more like an ultrafire 3000. It goes a while on a fillup, if you don't mind it taking a very long time to get there, and it failing in a month. But you can buy 8 of them instead of 4 or 1.

I actually had an Escort wagon for a couple years till it got rear ended. It was the classic old Grandma car in perfect condition with about 40K miles. The rear end was in perfect shape! The bumper only had some scratches, no dents the tail lights where not even broken. It buckled and was about 8" higher in the middle, the seat broke and the front doors wouldnt open. Ohhh good times
