X60vn in hand and tested - its a true monster!

Guys I just couldn’t pass up this monster that Vinh just released. Its big and its expensive, but by golly its a beast of a light!
It is really impressive over all. The light looks good, appears to be pretty good quality, and has a pretty nice UI. Has the clicky in the back and true variable ring for power levels. And it even has a magnetic charging port back by the clicky. And I must comment the magnet in my example holds very well. The light is pretty big, but about 2” shorter than my SR90 and it’s noticeably lighter than the SR90 and BTU.
Now for the good stuff. My numbers -
————————————————————
Low - 7.5 lumens
Level 2 - 574 lumens (level after low)
Max - 6430 lumens (at 30 seconds)
Throw - 433Kcd (calculated at 15m)
————————————————————-
That’s very impressive. Even more than I expected. We’re looking at 1286 lumens per dedomed XML2. I’m thinking this light might be tweaked to maybe 4.5A or so? Vinh estimates he bumps them to about 4a. Don’t know, but I like it. And thanks to the 6 cells, the light will still have reasonable runtime. I haven’t run it for too long of period yet, but I only felt it getting mildly warm. As a interesting and kinda scary fact, the sitting voltage I just measured out of this lights battery carrier - 25.2v - yikes!
Oh, for those of you not familiar with this light, this version has dedomed 6500k XML2 U2’s. And it comes with a nice carry case along with car charging adapter, shoulder strap, AND a cool bonus - 6ea 2600mah protected 18650’s. Supbeam brand, so who knows, but they appear to handle this beast just fine.
Man the X60vn just lights up everything in front of you. Awesome throw and awesome flood. Best of both worlds. And no waiting for warmup (hint HID). Just instant wall of light wide and far!!! And to think this monster even has a 7.5 lumen level that you can use for creeping around your house at night.
For some comparison sakes how well this light stacks up, here is a listing of the X60vn along with a few other powerful lights I own. All tested with the same lightbox and meter, and same testing methods. All lumen numbers are taken at 30 seconds. And all Kcd numbers are the highest repeatable number reached after about 15 seconds. These serious throwers I always test at 15m and calculate back.
Here -
———————————————————————-
TN31mb - 741 lumens & 414Kcd (4.0A?)
K40vn - 1625 lumens & 393Kcd (6.5A)
TN31vn - 1740 lumens & 495Kcd (6.5A)
X40vn - 3045 lumens & 158kcd (4.0A)
BTU - 4260 lumens & 477Kcd (5.5-6.0A)
FF4 - 7010 lumens & 430Kcd (60wt)
X60vn 6430 lumens & 433Kcd (4-4.5A?)

Well no beam shots tonite. That will have to wait for the next clear weekend. Here are a couple shots of the X60vn with some of my other serious lights.
.
.

I'm thinking about getting a beast from v54. $365 is a lot though, and I really should get a balance charger to go along with it. I may miss out on batch 2, so hopefully he does another batch. I'd almost certainly keep the domes on.

Nice to hear some positive info on the X60 after so much hate.

Looking forward to beamshots!

I do agree its expensive. More than I should have spent. I got in the first batch and was a little cheaper at $336, but still pretty bad. I can only justify the cost possibly by how dominate it is in performance. I mean this thing has almost as much throw as my Supershocker, but has 2200 more lumens. It’s not that far from a TN31 running at 6.5a. And it has, what - 4700 more lumens than it does. There really is no other led that can truly compete with it. Not even modded. Not even a modded TRJ18. And the X60vn does this while running at a reasonable 4-4.5a. Stock it has a 2hr runtime on high, but even at this level it will likely do well over an hour. And yeah its suppose to kick down at some point. But that “lower” level will still be about 5000 lumens. And of course you can still kick it back up if you want.
As for leaving the domes on, I thought about doing that too. But now seeing the serious flood and wall of light the X60vn puts out even dedomed, I just don’t think keeping the domes on will benefit enough to counter what I would guess to be a 200k+ loss in throw. It would still be very impressive in that setup too though.

congrats on this purchase! i need to see this and the super shocker going toe to toe

I figure I can dedome later if I really want more throw. I'd probably upgrade the emitters of the XM-L continues improving anyway, which is a great time to try something different. If I do get this light, I'll also get a BTU that's dedomed. V54 gets really good prices on the BTU, so I might have him mod it too. It's kind of depressing. I want to do it myself, but there's not much point if it costs about the same to have the work done for me.

Nice! That X60vn is bright as hell and sweet looking to boot! I'm envious. :P

Wow. Cant wait for the night shots. Thanks for sharing.

Wow that is quite the light. Congrats on owning that beast.

DAT big awesome 5x XM-L2 reflector..

Sick light.

I hope there will be a budget clone soon. 0:)

I could swear I've seen a 6x18650 that was similar to this with multiple emitters and side clickie...

Found it. Not a side clickie. http://www.shenzhen-wholesale.com/12XT6-CREE-T6-5-modes-super-Bright-Aluminum-Alloy-LED-Flashlight_sku9979.html

That 2nd link is an interesting light. Looks pretty good. If you can put one of those beast drivers in it, I think it would be a neater light than the TRJ18. I’m sure those 12 LEDs would heat up pretty quick though with the 90mm head. Would be an impressive flooder if not driven too hard.

Thanks for the suggestion leaftye. I am aware of those lights.

I already have a sick modified multiemitter light. Form factor is not what I find interesting. The large 5 emitter reflector is what I am drooling over. :)

Thanks for the mini-review. Im sure you’re very proud of your light and have every reasons to be. Just the fact that the host isnt glued in this category of light makes it that much more appealing. If this were a larger & deeper reflectored light (such as an upscaled BTU reflector) Id bite in a heartbeat and gladly kick out the $. Of course everything is a compromise, and this light would easily serve a great many needs while satisfying expectations.

Group buy anyone?

Im looking forward to your beam shot comparisons.

Vinh says the X60 actually comes stock with a copper pill that the LEDs sit on. He basically took it out, sanded the surface smoother, reapplied the xml2’s on copper Sinkpads onto this copper pill. Of course dedomed. He then did a resistor mod to bump it from appx 3A stock to its current 4-4.5A range. He then did wick mods on all the springs, touched up any connects needed and replaced all the main wires. He said stock it was setup pretty nice. But with him boosting the amps he wanted everything bumped along with it.

That’s the first stock light I’ve heard of running on a copper pill, interesting. Though running it on copper doesn’t really make much sense with the conservative 3A drive.

It does make you wonder since many people seem to equate a brass pill as one made of copper.

It does when it costs 300,000 cents! I like that they've improved the headroom for this like. The Thrunite TN-32 also has a copper pill, except the copper extends to the exterior where it can have the greatest effect.

Still no beam shots?

Sorry, but no. Way too difficult for me to do during the work week. I live in the city during the week, but head to family country house on weekends. This one, and many of my lights are too powerful to use around town without attraction too much attention.
In fact, I had my X60vn out shining across a field close to the house this past weekend. Maybe 300m away at a treeline. There are houses perhaps 20deg or so away from where I was shining (same distance away). Only had it on for perhaps 10 seconds.
Went back about 15min later with a few other lights to try in comparion to the X60vn. And guess what I find - squad car sitting right in front of the treeline I was shooting at, sitting in the dark, faced my direction. Had to get binoculars out to make sure it was a cop. No mistaking the lightbar on top.
So no more playing in my neighborhood with the powerful lights.
If the weather cooperates this weekend I’ll get some shots done. Its suppose to be a decent chance of rain, so we’ll see how it plays out.
Any particular lights you want to see it compared too?
