laptop batteries

The HP battery on my laptop died so I tore it apart and removed 6 18650s. Two were 0V, two @ 1.10V and two were 3.64V. I threw away the 0V ones and am charging the 3.64V ones. Should I throw away the 1.10V? I am inclined to.

The batteries say 2500mah and it is the OE battery pack so maybe the two I salvaged will be good cells.

Well, considering the pack was dead, I'm guessing not much point.

Two of them were completely dead. I was just asking about the low voltage ones.

I recently did the same thing - two of mine were 1.2 and 2.2 V. Both charged normally and worked in my X2000 very well. I didn't retry them in the laptop pack but I assume they'd work.

Thanks cia212 and welcome to the forum.

I'm a shameless scrounger of laptop batteries and have found them to work as well as any commercially available cells. Only drawback is they have no protection circuitry as they rely on the pack and the laptop to handle those functions so not useful in multi-cell applications.

just wondering does anyone else here salvage lithium cells from drill batteries that you take from home depot recycling bin ?

Do they let you take them? It was kind of fun salvaging the batteries, I’d love to get a bunch more.

i dont know but the guys usually only let me take a couple at a time . helps build up the LiMn collection. most were pretty easy using torx screwdrivers to open them up

Done it before. My current 18650 collection is half made up of salvaged batteries from laptop packs, just make sure you test with a DMM and only use them in single-cell applications.

lol my "collection " of 18650 consists of 95% of salvaged laptop batteries irc there are about 168

OK all of you laptop battery thieves, what charger do you use to safely charge these unprotected cells? I'm looking for recommendations.

I went for a 35 minute bike ride with the kids tonight and used one of the laptop batteries in the yezl raptor. On high all the way no problems at all. As a side note the Yezl raptor has finally redeemed itself as an excellent bike light. Easy to switch between floody for the street and focused for the trail in the woods. Makes me more likely to buy the upcoming Tank XML BLF edition.

I think you have been converted lol. The flood can be very useful.

Chargers: Solarforce V2, Ultrafire Wf-139, Tunigy A8

Always the option to use a hobby charger to monitor the capacity put into the cells and essentially see if they are holding a good charge
