Direct comparison with 10 degree TIR running an XML-U2 and XPG-2 led.

Just a quick couple of pictures showing the difference in beams running 3 amp 7135 drivers, different manufacturers, and the above LED's. Both lights were running Sanyo batteries. The XML driver was a KD and the XPG was an IOS Qlite. Output at the tailcaps, XML 2.99 amps and XPG 2.9 amps. Both pictures were taken at the same time. TIR's were from the same batch. Supplier has been long forgotten. On the light meter the XPG was a long way ahead.

Firstly the XML-U2 on aluminium star and copper pill. Link to light. TIR has been changed since the light was built.

Secondly the XPG on a copper star and aluminium pill. Link to light.

Mouseover XPG-2, Mouseout XML-U2.

New shots added 1.5.13. Firstly an Ultrafire C12 for comparrison.

Again as its a different night the 10 degree TIR XML-U2 at 3 amps.

And thirdly a dedomed XPG-2 running the same 10 degree TIR and 3 amps.

Mouse over, dedomed xpg and mouse out, C12.

Is the mouse in/out picture correct? Seems backwards to me, maybe it’s just me.

+1

I do like the XPG throw - would be nice to have a multi-led with both

Sorry guys your right. Had a bugger of a time getting it to work. Its fixed now. I agree GottaZoom. Using them at night the XML is good and then you use the XPG and it just has that little more without the larger light spread. Southland, I’d love to be able to compare it with your little Convoy but I dont have one. The TIR’s do have a different light pattern to a reflector. The reflector will generally give a smaller hot spot but a bigger spread of light but again that is just a generalization…

Just fo fun I combined the two images,

nice spread of light, the xp-g takes over where the xp-g leaves off.
Maybe I should build a triple, 2*xp-g2 for throw and an xm-l2 for spread
Or put 2*xp-g2 and 2*xm-l2 into my Kung

Cheers David

Dedomed XPG-2 pictures added to the OP.

Nice comparison! I really like TIR's, and it works really well with a dedomed xpg! I want to make a light now with a dedomed xpg2 and TIR!

Thanks for the work!

Great comparison! Your XP-G2 light rooks!

Thanks for sharing!

nice  Is that the ubiquitous LEDDNA/FT/IOS 10deg optic with white holder? I’ve used a bunch of those with XM-Ls but was always curious about the beam with an XP-G. Looks like my plan for a XM-L+XP-G mtb helmet light using these optics is a good idea, thanks!

Thanks Matt. Yes they are the ones. OL has used, l think these or similar, quite a lot of these TIRs as well in his builds using LED’s there not meant for.
I must say that white walling these sometimes gives a crappy beam but outside there fine.

I've found these to be nearly identical beam to a smooth P60, the center spot is very slightly bigger. But in a much smaller package.

Very nice pics and great info. Love that de-domed XP-G2. I find it’s a huge advantage in a smaller light in particular. Once you get into a large reflector and high amps then not so much.

Thanks for the info.
