new mod with a goofy lens.

I bought this one off of e-bay cheap. It looked to be the same manufacturer as one of the recent cheapies at Wallbuys. It takes two 18650's in parallel. It has the same handle and switch on the handle. This one is a zoomie unlike the wallbuys reflector model. Although it's a zoomie the lens is two parts. It has the convex lens and part of the lens is a regular lens. Of course the lens is just cheap plastic but it's thin enough and polished enough that it's pretty darn clear.

Stock it had really low numbers. It has a very cheap driver that isn't good for much the way it comes. It was putting out a whopping 250 lumens with the XML emitter. Of course a lot of that is reflector loss but still pretty bad. I first modded the driver by jumping resistors and adding lowering some resistance by simply soldering over a couple points. I was basically willing to try anything figuring I would junk the driver anyway. But I liked the way the lens throws so I kept going.

What I found was that the battery carrier was much of the trouble. I suspect the same is true for the wallbuys cheapy. So I modded the carrier with copper wick wire. I'll show you a picture but basically I simply wound one long strip of wick wire completely around the ends from contacts to springs. Then I did spring mods on both ends and added heavy gauge wire.

I finished it off by adding a de-domed XP-G2 that was mounted on an extra copper star to adjust the focal length properly and added tinfoil folded very very tightly around the inside of the flashlight. There is a crevice where the emitter sits. This gives it plenty of thermal transfer to run without overheating at all. I am getting zero thermal sag.

The finished light is still just under 600 lumens OTF but that is not bad for an XP-G2 in this kind of lens. It's putting out 90kcd as well and the neat part is that it also has flood no matter how it's zoomed. So you are basically adjusting the hotspot but always have plenty enough light to walk with even on low. I have to say that I'm very happy with this light. It gets great run time, the tint is nice and it performs really well for such a cheap light.

I have it too. It’s got a nice beam profile. I also put another driver in the reflector version but I put an XP-G2 de-domed in it at 3amps. There was really no good way to add extra heatsinking to it. It’s also really hard to fit a driver in. I don’t know if you have taken it apart yet but you will see what I mean when you do. These are pretty cool for the price.

I have taken it apart, and i agree there is not alot of space between the original driver and the bit of aluminum that supports the emitter star. I was thinking of machining a new heatsink out of copper for a smaller XM-L2 star and driver support, and stripping of the components of the original driver PC board, then boring the center out & embedding/epoxying a Nanjq 105c 3.04A driver ( using the 4-mode with moonlight mode) in the center of the original board is one option. The other option is when i machine a new copper plate, i will re-design it to hold the Nanjq 105c instead of the original driver.
Then i am going to retrofit a tail-cap clickie to turn on/off the light, and use a reverse momentary-off button in place of the original handle mounted button to control the modes.
it do have a great bem profile, and woudl be nice to have that with an XM-L2 for more lumens and flood, and more modes plus moonlight with the two 18650s it would have great run time still.

Looks like an interesting Aspheric lens. it allows soem flood at the same time a focused throw beam ?

Yep you have a hot spot that varries from large to all the way down like a regular convex lens so that the square die is seen. But either way it still has a flood. Kind of neat how it works. I like setting it with a small hotspot but not so small that it’s a square beam. You get great throw and plenty of light to walk with.

A two part lens is a good idea because it saves thickness and therefore total length and adds design flexibility. The parts may have different function.
