i noticed you never mentioned the hidden “extra Low” mode, ( hold the swttch on from “off” and it turns on a lower Low with only 0.02 amps draw on a 14500.
I modded mine with a Nichia 219, and its now my favourite single AA/14500 non-zommie EDC light.
Is there a pill?
What is the diameter of the board the LED is on?
Is there solid metal behind the board the LED is on, or does it just sit on a ridge, contact at edges?
I have this light along with its cheaper and near identical twin, the SolarStorm SC01
I purchased both for comparison and with the intention of modding them, up the amps and keep an XM-L2 in one and go to an XP-G2 in the other.
Both lights show about 1.4A at the tailcap with a slight edge to the Palight (same AW 14500 in each light), 3.5 kcd for the Palight, 2.6 kcd for the SolarStorm. Just got my lux meter but have tried to be accurate, haven’t started lumen testing for my lights.
I started disassembling the SolarStorm but stopped when I found the pill is press fit into the body. The switch is mounted to the pill and it’s a one piece body (head is not separate). It will not be an easy light to mod.
I decided to hold off on possibly destroying either of the lights (too many other projects right now). I may get back to it but then again, maybe not.
Very nice lights since I like the ability to use both 14500 and AA. Worth the money? Maybe. In my samples the Palight was built a little bit better, in a manner only a few neurotic folks would understand. Again, I don’t know if was worth more than the SolarStorm.
