FastTech SolarStorm SC01/02/03 lights

Is the star glued down?

Could the sc03 be bored out to take an 18350?

No - it has thermal grease under it, from the looks. The star definitely moves on the pill top when the screws are out.

"Bored out for 18350's?" - I'm no expert there, but the walls look pretty thin where the threads are, but the 18350's are close to fitting. In fact I was wondering if there are 18350's out there thinner than the ones I tried.

In the last pic above, you may notice a scratch on the right at the edge of the pill - this is where I tried unscrewing the pill with a needlenose, but to no avail - the needlenose slipped and put a deep scratch there.

I'd love to put in a XM-L2 T6 4C on copper, but the wiring looks iffy - '+' and '-' out the same hole, so if no slack, may not be able to do so. Also there's the mystery of the 3rd wire... If I could get the pill out, I'd upgrade the wires anyway.

What can you say about the tint of the leds?

If you can, it would be wonderful know how many lumens out with NIMH.

Thanks.

Post #55 - the Eneloop Pro's are NiMH cells, I believe. Didn't try alkaline cells though, but think they will be about double NiMH's?

Sorry, did not see that post.

102 lm certainly low light, but enough for an emergency.

again…

could you please tell us if with NiMh has less lumens on low than with 14500 on low???

thanks!

Ooops, I'm thinking yes, scaled amperage in modes, so it's scaled accordingly. Didn't test that, but think I recall seeing it on in the lightbox for a moment. At work now, no access for another 8 hours or so.

I used eneloops and 14500’s on my sipik68 and yes eneloop gives out lower output when compared to 14500 battery
I would assume it will do the same thing on this light too

ok we will wait some hours until you are free/able to test the lumens on low with nimh….

I guess obviously it will give a lot less lumens on low with nimh instead of 14500.

thanks!

Mode Operation - this is how I understand how it works

  • With it OFF, hold the button for about 1.5 secs and it will come on in "very low" mode, 1 click will turn it OFF
  • With it OFF, one click it comes on in "low" mode, another click to "high" mode, next click OFF
  • With the light in "low" mode, hold the button and it starts ramping up, let go at anytime to set the new "low" mode. If you hit the max ramp setting, the light blinks twice. The max ramp is still lower than "high" mode
  • If you have the "low" mode max'ed out, holding the button will reset it back to the lowest value for "low" mode
  • With the light ON in either "low" or "high" mode, a double click will be strobe, then single click to exit strobe

The "very low" mode is a nice feature because you don't have to go through "high" to turn the light OFF, but definitely not as low as a moonlight mode.

More Details:

  • The tailcap lock-out feature works very well on both lights - 1/4 turn, light goes OUT - power is cut
  • For the SC01, KeepPower 840 mAh protected and Sanyo unprotected cells fit and work well

Thanks Tom for that description. I was wondering how the modes work.

Thank you Tom!
Sounds like nice mode settings, at least for me.

Can someone confirm the tint colour? Bluish, greenish or pure white? I just sold my S10 because I can’t stand the greenish and now looking for a replacement.

Definitely cool white - looks 1A to me. I had the beam up against my BLF Mini-01 with a 3C in it, and definitely a lot cooler than the Mini. RIC at CNQ has both these lights available in neutral 3C, more money though.

Sounds like an almost perfect light. Only thing I don’t quite like is the anno (but too shiny from the pics), everything else sounds/looks great.

I’m curious to see what the modded ones look like with a better driver. Does anyone know if Ric’s NW versions have a better driver?

In the meantime, I said to the wife “how about if you buy yourself something nice so I can justify a titanium flashlight?” and she said “sounds good to me”, so I have the go-ahead for the Ti Olight S15. It’s a little closer to my perfect EDC but I don’t believe has the same ramping. And it’s contingent on me telling the gardener that I’ll be raking the truckload of pine needles myself, so the Ti S15 will cost me a Saturday. #firstworldproblems

I'd bet RIC's has the same driver - the description match's how the FT ones work to a T, though my description is more thorough . It certainly would not have more amps as well - RIC's stuff is mostly pretty conservative, though couple exceptions.

ok - did the deed

Full Mode test on Eneloop Pro NiMH cell at 1.3v:

"very low" mode: 2.9 lumens

"low" mode: 11 lumens

"high" mode: 102 lumens

Full Mode test on Primary alkaline cell at 1.6v:

"very low" mode: 3.4 lumens

"low" mode: 12 lumens

"high" mode: 108 lumens

This "very low" to me is acceptable as a moonlight mode.

Looks like im going to pull the trigger on an a couple tomorrow, and then wait for a review on the sc02
