ANNOUNCEMENT: Gearbest, the dealer of the subject charger (the BT-C3100) in this groub buy, has contacted Opus Instrument, the manufacturer, and bought a supposedly ‘improved’ version of the power supply. Gearbest has contacted HKJ and will send the new power supply for a quick review. Whatever the result of the new power supply’s performance be, Gearbest is committed in this endeavor and will still sell at the Group Buy price of $41, to those who are in the list of participants but still want to proceed to buy, even in the event there will be less than the minimum of 50 commitments.

Do that mean the group buy won’t start & end before HKJ has tested it?  I’m in if so.

Yes.

Tomorrow Dora of Gearbest is expecting to receive the new power supply. Then it will be sent to HKJ for a quick review.

I hope it is a complete charger, not only the power supply.

This post is from Henry Xu, the chief engineer of the BT-C3100: Reply concerning HKJ’s conclusion
(copy/pasted for his post #145 http://budgetlightforum.com/node/28599?page=4#new
Post # 145

1. The charger is oscillating and stops the charging a bit too premature
This has been solved by firmware update: charger will make no current increase back in the CV stage. So no oscillating at all circumstances.

2.The “resting”/overheating periods during 2A charging or 4 × 1A discharge

2A charging is supposed to be used for high capacity Li-ion batteries, we should mention this in user manual that charging with ni-mh AA batteries with 2A charging current is not appropriate. Since 1A discharge current for 4 pcs li-ion batteries will generate a lot heat, and the fan exhausting speed is not fast enough. So it can lead to thermo-protection kicked in, which this safety mechanism is designed for. So I hope it is acceptable. If only two batteries is discharged at 1A speed, it should be no problem.

3. Power spikes from the power supply
We noticed for 9A peak current with very little period time of less than 10ms. we improved this problem by adding a larger enough filtering capacitor and its peak current now is reduced to 7A. The problem is not 100% solved, however it is improving the power supply quality significantly.

4. Uses trickle charging for NiMH when cell is fully charged
I think trickle charging current for nimh is necessary. And we believe this is a good feature of this charger. We have no plan to take this trickle charging away for nimh batteries. For li-ion batteries, there is no trickle charge current.

Can anyone comment on how this deal varies from the version listed as a BC3100 in this previous deal for $45? Presumably they either will both have / not have the oscillation problems (although since it results only in minor li-ion undercharging, it’s probably not a big deal anyway)?: http://budgetlightforum.com/node/25886

Well, I guess I’m in for one as well, since I really prefer proper slots over the mess of wires & magnets with a hobby charger. If I’m understanding this right, it looks like they addressed the power spike issue within the charger itself rather than using a higher current power supply. I wonder if we can add an even bigger capacitor to “improve” it more? What will it do to the life expectancy of the power supply by drawing over twice the rated current, even over such short time periods?

I cross-posted this deal over at SlickDeals. If any of you are also SD members, go thumbs up it & help answer people’s questions and maybe we can get a few more towards the 50 unit goal.

Hi BLF,

Is this group buy for US version only, or EU will be down to $41 either?

Opus BT-C3100 LI-ion NiCd NiMh LCD Smart Intelligent Battery Charger with EU Adapter – Black

I think it comes with an EU like in most photos, with a US adapter.

Damn!

I’m in EU/PL and the group buy is about version with “US plug” Sad

That means that I cannot buy it. Somehow didn’t notice this earlier.

Hi dear,

Please don’t worry for the power supply plug, we have both two plugs, US and EU, for the group buy, you can choose as you like Smile

Gearbest has EU version either but it is more expensive now ($56.99 vs. $59.14), and it’s unclear whether special price is coming for both versions of just US.

That would be somewhat disappointing, as those adapters usually make the plugs huge and are sometimes loose fitting.

The improved version will show 2.0 after power up for 2 second and then make full segment display turned on. This is the way to tell the difference between HKJ’s first reviewed version which has no version number displayed after power up. In future, if we make any improvement, we will have this version number updated reflecting the change.

Thanks for the clarification, Henry.

Thanks for taking the time to reply to us personally, that speaks volumes about you and the business you represent, most appreciated.

But I have to ask, so with the current fist and second version, unless sellers switch them on and then inform us, we wont know until be buy one and switch it on ourselves if its the revision model? IN essence a lucky dip?

On that, did you read HKJs review of the item yourself or just the highlights and then responded to those?
