Share your Convoy L4 lux numbers (Comparing lux meters)

Many people have an L4, or have one incoming.

Im curious to see what readings different people get on different lux meters. Could become interesting. I assume most of these L4s have quite similar output, at least with similar emitter.

-Use a fully charged and good quality 18650 cell. Do not bother sharing peak tailcap readings. (Convoy L4 does not use a regular linear driver. So these readings will vary depending on battery type used and DMM wires. Most will probably see around 2,7-3A on the tail. Emitter amps can still be the same)

-State lux meter

-State emitter type

-Share your highest lux number @ 1 meter after about 30 seconds. (this number can be converted from a longer distance)

-Share other lux numbers or lumen numbers (@ 30 sec)

Notes:
The measurement I made back In January for throw on the L4 of 41 kcd seems high, compared to other throw measurements of similar lights I've done -- it kind of stands out. I reviewed my throw measurement setup and found I might have been getting some reflection, resulting in artificially raising the reading. Still don't see how this accounts for this excessive reading, but the readings above have that reflection eliminated and I feel are more realistic. I no longer have that L4 light in a stock state, so can't re-test with the same light. Another possibility is the meter battery was dying and I didn't notice - when that happens, the meter will read higher than normal. I usually notice this before recording/publishing but this could have gotten by.

I'm still confident in the meter and my testing methodology. From comparisons, it seems to match up well with ANSI rated lights and much more expensive meters.

After starting this thread. I ordered the HS1010A. But as you can also see in that thread, not super happy with some of the readings. And as you can see in this thread, it might be giving me too low numbers... Hopefully this thread can help people making better decisions about what lux meters to buy after data is collected. Assuming many of the L4 owners share their numbers.

Do you have any other lights? Maybe if we all post tables of readings we can make better comparisons. Also, even 10 stock L4s there will likely be differences on the same meter.

Sure, I have a "ton" of other lights. Most of which are modified, or in pieces, waiting to be modified.

With the lage sales numbers from Simon @ Aliexpress , including the super cheap lights+ some sales numbers from WB including some very low prices (do not trust their sales counter btw)+ FT+ recent sales numbers from BG. I would assume there are close to 300 Convoy L4 sold, if not more.

With the L4, all lights (with similar emitter) should in theory have quite similar output on a freshly charged cell. All lights comes with XM-L2. And there is not a huge spread in tints. That can not be said about any of the other popular Convoy lights.

Most of the typical budget lights are all over the place when it comes to consistency in output. So not much point in comparing those. ZY-T08, HD2010 etc etc, can be quite different, even those from the same group buy..

Starrylight might be a good option?? Im not familiar with it..

Either way I think its easier (and better) for comparison sake to just stick to one light and see if any useful information comes out if this thread. The more people who share their numbers, the more useful it can become.

This is not good, after reading about many different lux meters, somehow I stumbled on the I.S. thread, and now I feel the urge to build my own Integrating Sphere, lol. Jeez, just when you think you got everything you need, something else comes up!

8 measurements at 8m converted back to 1m.

I threw out any that abnormally high/low (standard deviation), and remeasured. (there were 2 measurements that were no good)

M4D M4X, I have tried two different apps on my Galaxy SII. On one I could not see anything when shining on my phone, on the other it only went from 10/100/1000/1000 etc.. Did not get anything useful out of them..There might be some decent ones out there, but having a lux meter is 10x more convenient.


So far, it seems quite clear that that the LX1330B gives higher readings than the other light meters.

The light sensor in my LX-1010B (my highest reading meter) is a little bit off, so it might read higher when I fix it. Thank you djozz for the tip.

I also tried different batteries. My original reading was done with a 20R, almost fully charged.

Green NCR18650B Protected 4,16V - 8960 lux

Keeppower NCR18650B Protected 4,16V - 8820 lux

I noticed that the lux were dropping by a little bit since I did not take long enough breaks between the batteries (and light became a bit warmer). But I cant say there are any noteworthy difference between protected ncr18650b/ ncr18650b / Samsung 20R. I also tried 20R another time after the light was cooled, and got the same as I got with the first NCR18650B protected.

Sorry for oftopic, can anyone recommend if there is anything better then the HS1010A in the price range or maybe a bit more?
