Ultrafire R5 5 mode @ Dx

Your 501B still not arrived FlexakaMal?

Yes it has swapped the dropin to the skyray body. Led not centred easy fixed. Throws a very tight ah mmm beam shot coming :)

Dropped light onto the wooden floor from 1.8m didn't even flicker :) Shot is from 4m . Still building my house which is the reason for the unusual things in the pic

Now that is a big spot.....hows the throw on that sucker.

I will set up a photo shoot soon at 30m or so. Have to see if my camera will do it. It lights up 70 meters with no problem. The Hot spot is the same size as my Q5 but lots brighter. Though the R5 is being pushed at 1100 and the Q5 at 700. mmm cell is at 3.82v that could be why :)

Okay cool.....borrow a camera if you have to.Cool

Did you try it with the 501B body at all?

No threw it straight in The Skyray. The 501b will end up a Q5 for a friend who is going to do me a favor.

FlexakaMal, you didn't happen to have a look at the driver of the drop in I supposed? I'm just wondering whether it's genuinely -4.2V as KD claim (perhaps it was at one time but KD are also known for their random spec generator) or it actually supports 8.4V at least. Since KD currently list the R5 -8.4V as cheaper I'm wondering whether it's what comes with them these days.

BTW it is a OP reflector right? Not SMO? If you happen to have any photos of the dropin or it has any markings you could mention much appreciated.

Oh and the dropin is still going fine I hope? Not angry blue yet.

Cheers

Its a OP reflector I haven't tested it on 8.4v it was running on high last night for 50 minutes to an hour on high no ill effects( power outage). The driver has a blue ring if that helps. No markings anywhere on the drop in.

Now it's only $13.35 btw...

Which one would be a better buy...this one or the MC-E version on DX @ $20?

If you don't plan to use the dropin in something else I would say this one. I doubt the MC-E will be much brighter then this, at least not for long and this one should be more efficient. Particularly if you're adventerous, you can probably upgrade this to do 1.4A-1.5A (max rated current for the XP-G) which will help it compete with the MC-E. If you don't like the body, there's also the WF-502B from KD for about $15.

I myself was choosing between the WF-502B (this was when the WF-501B was still ~$14 so it was only about $1 more) on KD and Lightake's 'Solarforce' XP-G R5 for about $22.79 with 5% discount on Friday. Ended up going with the 'Solarforce' because the dropin's probably slightly better (looks to me a lot like the Skyray one which has got good reviews & in any case it does do at least 8.4V), it has the extension tube and the L2 body clones/WF-504B tend to be highly rated oh and also LT would hopefully have better support then KD but I was quite tempted to go with the WF-502B because it's so cheap. Made my discard anything else like going with a genuine Solarforce because I was never looking to spend that much and realisticly that would end up over double if I went with the WF-502B so I just couldn't justify it to myself.

Thanks. I'm just looking for a light that I don't have to modify. So what you're saying is the fake Solarforce > WF-502B > WF-501B in terms of body? The brightness of all 3 should be the same?

Generally yes although it depends on your requirements. Bear in mind I don't actually own any yet but from what I've read the fake L2s appear to get good ratings. There's also a chance to mod them with either genuine or fake Solarforce accessories. You may be able to do this with the others as well but it's probably less likely.

The WF-501B is the smallest which is good if you want small but does mean it's also likely to have the worse heatsinking. The WF-502B does tend to have the worse contact between dropin and head (see http://budgetlightforum.cz.cc/node/273 & http://budgetlightforum.cz.cc/node/417) which you definitely should mod and probably reduces the heatsinking improvement from the larger body.

In my case since I'm planning to put it on my bike and ideally want at least 20 mins constant runtime on high so good heatsinking is a must.

P.S. Forgot to mention earlier but added it now that another factor in favour of LT for me was that I'd hopefully get better support then KD since I've communicated with Daniel a lot

using a 5 mode KD dropin from a Ultrafire 501b

My Kaidomain 5 mode R5 XPG drop-in that came in a Suterfire G2 burned out after less than 5 minutes on high.It just suddenly quit and the brass driver/pill part would get very hot w/ a burning smell when turned on again. The LED itself was not visibly burned. The light had less than one hour total run time.I have not had any trouble with single mode R5s from DX or Solarforce.

I think you have been unlucky. I have one from a ultrafire 501b 5 mode in my Skyray and another in a 502b both have seen a fair bit of use and no problems.

The Skyray an hour tail standing on high no hint of overheating.Very warm to touch but I wouldn't say hot beam was still white.

FlexakaMal

What part of the body is very warm to the touch?

How long does the head or body take to warm up?

Run the light for 5 mins the touch the pill and reflector is it really hot?

The torch head is warm reflector/pill is hot pleasantly hot on my cheek, mind you it is currently 4 deg c in my house..
