Wow, some of you guys really take your coffee seriously. I'm just your normal coffee drinker who likes a couple a good mugs a day. You guys are in a different league
I've taken heat for loving my percolator...someone called it a coffee soup maker in an earlier thread. I really don't care ...I like the fact I can get different tastes out of it .3 days later the thick black coffee can be sliced with a knife ..Reminds me of drinking little black coffees' in Miami Fla.
I’ve been putting a course grind in a plunger with cold water, coffee to water at about 1:10 or a bit stronger. Put it in the fridge for about 12 hours and plunge.
Comes out with a very smooth coffee taste with no acidity but still has kick. Straight up over ice and it’s perfect.
The 'fancy' methods/machines may be better, I don't know, never tried any. But after having learned how to make coffee without using a filter, I can no longer stand coffee that comes out of a conventional filter machine. I believe it's called 'cowboy coffee' or 'campfire coffee'? Boil water, remove from heat, add coffee grounds, wait, then remove the grounds by pouring from one cup to another back and forth until most of the grounds are gone. Contrary to conventional American wisdom, consuming small amounts of coffee grounds is not fatal.
I'm extremely sensitive to bitter tastes, and for some unknown reason coffee done this way is about a thousand times less bitter and requires tons less sugar.
newbie to all things bright, I occasionally ride mountain bike at night so doing some research,
been using friend’s bike light (cheap clone w/ external battery pack).
finally a topic that I’m somewhat conversant in…
another home roaster here and I primarily drink espresso or cappucino with the occasional
pourover.
If you enjoy a cup, the only thing I’d add is that you should try buying freshly roasted coffee,
locally if possible. If not avail, there are plenty you can mail order from for incredibly cheap;
5 lbs shipped for ~$50. Either split the order w/ friends or freeze them in jar to prolong freshness.
I like Folgers 100% Columbian, dark roast, strong, black, hot and 20 oz at a time. I started drinking coffee when I was about 6. Back then with cream and sugar. Working in construction I learned to just drink it black, hot and fast. Not a problem if it rolls out of the pot into the cup. No Decaf! Ever! It’s bitter, yuck!
I like Kona coffee beans from Hawaii, when I can afford them. I am not against a healthy dose of Kahlua in a cup o joe. A lifetime of fresh hot coffee, a tradition here that’s lifelong and then some, makes me think bad things of “iced coffee” drinkers. Strange, to me, to drink it ice cold. And I’ve had it that way by accident before and about gagged! (Local eatery drive though someone messed up and made coffee in the tea brewer, my iced tea turned out to be iced coffee! Funny, same place I once got an iced tea, was crunching the ice at the bottom of the cup and crunched a cricket! Preferable to the iced coffee to be honest)
Coffee is a way of life, first thing of every day, for at least 30 years. And the best part of waking up, is Folgers in your cup! :bigsmile:
Good point, roasting is fun, but not too fun. People say, “Oh, it must smell so good.” I reply, “Not really, more like burning green sticks. Now about 12 hours later, oh yeah!”
Currently doing Maxwell crystals at home. If I ever run out, will try folgers crystals. Eventually, I will buy a press I guess. At work, I do like the pressed coffee, but lately, been making cold brew at work. Great summertime coffee to take outside. Mix up some simple syrup ahead of time too, if you sweeten your coffee.
Thought about getting an aeropress instead of standard french press. Thoughts on it? I’m not picky, I just want better than percolator for cheap. I had forgotten how bitter crystals can be!
