IS: Info/Announcements: Quad and Triple XP Series 20mm Copper Direct Thermal Boards (7/3)

QUAD XPL!!!

I'm excited about those mcpcb's. I ordered them directly from dsche and they were supposed to be delivered today, but I'm not sure what happened. XP-L Carclo optics are coming, but I don't know anything else about them.

Carclo 20mm Quad Optics should work with these boards, like the 10624. Not sure if they work with XP-L though.

So these are called “20mm quad optics”, but the actual diameter for the lens array is 24mm? So, this star + optic would require a pill that takes a 20mm star, but the head inner diameter would need to be at least 24mm?

Sorry you are correct, the optics are actually 24mm Quad Optics, my error.

No problem.

Also, how are the emitters on the quad board connected? Are they in parallel? Or in series?

Depending on how you wire it, the board is configurable in 1) 4S, 2) 2S2P, and 3) 4P.

I’m probably being a bit obtuse. I get the (1) and (2) configs, but I don’t understand the (3) config (4P). Why are there 3 “wires” from the right side (battery side) to the left side (star)? I probably would just want the 4P config, so how do I wire that “normally” (= only 2 wires from the driver to the star)?

Does anyone know the answer to my question above, per a more conventional 4P configuration (4 emitters in parallel) and just 2 emitter wires (+ and -) from whatever driver I use to the star pads?

Why not ask dsche?

If mine actually arrive today, I'll take a closer look for you.

Thanks, I’ll do that. I have a couple coming also from IS. I saw that thread earlier, but it seemed like it was an older thread and all the links don’t work (for me at least), so I wasn’t sure if it was still active.

If you do figure it out, please post, and I’ll do the same.

Thanks,
Jim

If you want 4P LEDs with one cell just wire it with one wire to the pad and make a bridge with another short cable to the other side

Does Is have suitable optics for the quad available?

The third configuration lets 2 strings of 2 leds in series run on two li-ions, using a common lineair driver. But because the driver MCU can not run on 2xli-ions in series (max for Attiny is 5.5V if i remember well), the voltage for running the MCU is picked up in between the two leds, that will be about half of the battery voltage. A bit unusual set-up, but it should work I guess.

Sorry, here is the relevant information I got from Alexey.

The picture above of the 2P2S doesn't make sense to me. Why isn't there anything touching the inner pads? 4S I don't understand at all. I'd probably always run it as 4P, and at least that makes sense to me.

Here's an album with 4 pictures. I tried to exaggerate the shading to show the traces. Actually, most of the board is trace. It's the cuts, the low areas, that are important. You can also see how the center pads are lifted up.

Hi,

Which part of “4S” don’t you understand (sorry - couldn’t help that :)…)?

Is it that you don’t understand why anyone would want to power the 4 emitters in series?

Or, that you don’t understand how that wiring configuration works?

If it’s the former, then I guess that you’d want that if you had a 4xLi-ion battery configuration (4S batteries), or if you had a boost driver that could support ~12V.

Jim

Picture above the 2P2S? The blank board?

It's the configuration. Both left pads are connected to each other, both middle pads are connected to each other, and both right pads are connected to each other. If I drew some diagrams I might possibly figure it out, but looking at it I can't see how it's possible to go 4S with those paired connections.

You have to think of the position of the emitters…

Come to think of it, how ARE the emitter pads arranged on this board (since there aren’t any +/- symbols)?

Also, does that small star-shaped exposed area/pad have any purpose?
