Preface: So after a few very pleasant exchanges with gearbest/brinyte (Jul. 16), it was agreed to send me a Brinyte HEX60, free of charge, for a review (it was before HBomb put up his review). It got here today (Jul. 24, via DHL). It even came with a brinyte labeled battery.
A little corner of the led die doesn’t light up/ was burned (before any of this began).
The light was described as having 5 modes, but when I put in the closest battery available (the battery that came with it, didn’t even charge it, I wanted to play with it that second), it came on as only one mode. It got hot fast, but I chalked that up to normal usage, as it was brand new to me. I then charged the battery (was at 3.7v), and tried again (pulled it off early, around 4.15v). Put in the battery, and fired it up.
I then realised: The driver was shorted, so it was direct driving the led. On an ALUMINUM star. S**t. I fumbled it in my haste to turn it off, and could not get it off fast enough. I watched as it went from a cool neutral white to cold white, with patches of blue.
Total runtime: under 5 minutes. Time run with a full battery: <10 seconds.
I went back later on and put in a almost dead battery, and it is now a cool white, with a blue tint. The blue spots in the beam are gone now.
I put it on a table, because I need a break to figure out what I wanted to do with it. The cat came along and knocked it off the table, I check to see if anything broke, and now it has 5 modes. WTF? Set it back down, because at this point I had no clue what the hell it was doing. Come back, and it is direct drive again. I then took it apart, and it has a nice solid pill. Problem is, I have no clue how to get it apart, short of drilling out the driver.
So my two questions are these: Do I email them back, saying I got a lemon, and ask for a new pill (the body and all its parts are still good), or risk ruining it by ripping it apart, and replacing the driver and maybe replacing the led. Or is that just poor reviewer etiquette?
Second question: Am I stuck with a tint shifted led, or is there any way to fix it?
