Best driver for 8.4v XM -L2 noctigon

How much room will you have for the driver?

Plenty of room as a heat sink can be designed around it.

If you're happy with around 3A, I would go for the LD-29 (available from FT and other sources) or an LD-2C (IOS & MTNelectronics). The LD-29 has two modes groups: one with strobe and another without. The LD-2C has three mode groups, none with strobe.

If you want more than that, the HX-1175B1 is a good option for 6A+ of reliable output, but it is quite a bit larger and more expensive. It would need to have another MCU piggybacked on top of it to get rid of the blinky modes. There isn't anywhere yet you can get one premade like this, but we would be happy to help you build one if that's what you're looking for!

Are these the same drivers? If so can they be used on single XM-L2, Mt-g2 and PT-54?

I would make sure you get the B1 version which has larger sense resistors, which I think boyatech actually sells, but check to make sure before ordering.

Stock it is right on the edge of blowing a single XM-L2, but it can be made to work with them. The MT-G2 and PT-54 are no problem. Check out this thread for more information.

This would be my choice. 5amps three modes High, medium and low. Various protections and it can be easily resistor modded for even more amps if you choose. It has extra spots for more resistors so you don’t even have to stack if you don’t want to. It’s a good solid driver that you can run more than one led on so driving one is a breeze for it.

Not to take this off topic but since RMM is here. If you could start carrying the driver I posted I would be a customer for some of them. I buy them 5 at a time from lightmalls right now, but those guys really get on my nerves. I have potted this driver and driven 6 emitters off of it with no problems. It’s a work horse.

18, are you talking about the large toroid LCK-LED version or the smaller toroid lightmalls version (same driver pretty much, just with a different toroid.)

Did the forum ever come to a conclusion about the new style 32mm DRY driver? I still have one but never used it, haven't messed with it in ages. Stock, the one I have does the exact same 3.5A output to a single XML2 with 2, 3, or 4 cells.

D cell Mag tube ID is 1.346", driver OD is 1.256".

Group 1: 5modes by default (High/Mid/Low/Strobe/SOS)
Group 2: 5% 30% 100%
Group 3: 100%>30%>Flash
Group 4: 100%>50%

Whichever one is cheaper really. I have used both of them and since I’m potting them anyway it doesn’t really matter to me. Right now I’m using the small toriod version and having good luck with it.

I actually have some of those drivers sitting around here somewhere...just need to find them! I also have some of the 19mm ones without the contact board...they are the same it looks like except the sense bank has a bit more resistance.

Is there anything in that 8.4v input, to single XM-L2 range, that has a MCU that can be programmed?, Like the linear drivers? I would not mind doing the 2D Maglites with 2x18650 or 2x26650, but I would want to have someone program the driver for ramping instead of stepped modes. I have not been watching all the threads here any more and if I did, I probably wouldn't understand. I just want the ability of 5-6 amps to an XM-L2 and the ability of using 2 Li-ions in series.

Anything out there for that?

Yes, the LD-29 can be piggybacked/swapped for an attiny, but I don't think it can deliver 5-6 amps reliably--it is more of a 3A to maybe 3.5A-4A driver. The HX-1175B can do 5-6 amps easily and can also be piggybacked and run with fast PWM, but it is MUCH larger than the LD-29.

Can a Maglite be tri bored for 3 18650's? Aren't they just a little too narrow for that?

Nope, they have to be (I think 16700s), but don’t remember any more. It was over at CPF where they were tri bored and I know 18650s would not work. Can’t remember the guy who did them.

First my math sucks then I can’t remember that 16650 are needed for a tribore maglite. They say the mind is the first thing to go south …. or was it north?

I worked this out for another member here the other day and measuring the tube I had for a Maglite 4D, I cannot tri bore the tube out for 18650 batteries.
