10440 li-ion battery and charger suggestions

Thanks Gary! That's good to know. Since I've gotten into li-ions, I have never left the house with them charging because of all the horror stories I've read about. I'm still not sure which batteries or charger to get though. I'm just going to keep on doing my homework. Smile

Yeah, I'm in exactly the same boat.

I went for what they call the protected ‘Trustfire Flames’ except for the 4x 10440s which are unprotected Trustfires.

I bought the unprotected ones because I read that the protected ones were too long to fit in my XP-EF23.

At the moment the Shekor charger is at the top of my list because it seems to be the safest of the universal budget chargers but no doubt I’ll change my mind a few more times before I eventually pull the trigger.

Cheers,

Gary

What? Protected batteries fits perfectly in the F23, I have it and I have protected 10440. The only thing is that with protected batts the spring is very compressed and screwing the tailcap is more difficult than when using alkalines or unprotected 10440. However protected batts fits well, even accepts batteries 1 or 2 mm longer than Protected ones. Even. Even

Fair enough, what make please?

I'm using the grey Trustfires in mine. They seem fine to me.

Thanks Don, I might have to pick your brains later if that's ok?

My F23 keeps flickering out when in low mode and only comes back on with a quick sharp 'adjustment' on a hard surface.

Will strip it down and see if it's anything obvious first.

Nothing: Try to screw the pill, mine did that thing sometimes, I resolved the problem full-screwing the pill down

About the protected 10440. I use the sku.30788, the gray ones.

If you want better and cheaper, buy the blue UltraFire protected ones, which are 1mm shorter than the gray ones and have a real capacity of 320mAh and performs better than the gray ones with high loads(like using them on HIGH with the F23).

The gray ones are 287mAh real capacity and performs worse on high loads than the newer blue protected ones

The blue protected ones are sku.36026

Thanks for the info Fran.

Cheers,

Gary

Does this Shekor charger charge 10440's? It doesn't say so in the specs but I could be wrong. Also, are there 10440's in a TrustFire Flame? I searched but I couldn't find any. Frown

I would have thought that the charging current was too high for 300mah-ish batteries but Old4570 has tested it with 10440s and explains why he thinks the initial charge rate of 450ma is not a real issue in this post.

Most of my charger information is second hand from the CPF Shekor review, Ultrafire WF-188 test and the cradle charger roundup which you’ve probably already read but I see Nil Einne has received one so will be good to read his findings if he posts them.

When I was looking a few weeks ago I couldn’t find any of the Flame packaged 10440s either, only blue and grey.

Cheers,

Gary

Thanks Gary! Right now I have the Trustfire TR-002 and the Universal Smart Quick Charger on my list. I might just get both unless I find something better. As you know, there aren't a lot of 10440 chargers and batteries for that matter out there compared to the other size batteries. As for batteries, I'm looking at the blue UltraFire Protected 10440 3.6V 500mAh and the gray TrustFire Protected 10440 "600mAh" 3.7V.

I'm still looking though and thanks to everyone for all of your help.

What is the difference between the Trustfire TR-001 and TR-002? Is it 1 port vs. 2 ports?

Yes, external appareance, number of channels, and lack of 12v input in the case of TR-002.

Internally, I imagine that circuitry is the same

So other than one being a single cell charger and the other a 2 cell charger, is there much of a difference? Is one better or more reliable than the other? Is the TR-002 a newer model?

I prefer the TR-001 for its 12volt input. You can use always the 12v input to avoid explosions (is the internal power supply what explodes), and also the 12volt input is nice for using in your car, solar panel, etc...........

With the 12v input, with the appropiate connector, you can make it work from 7volt to 16 volt DC.

So in a case of a 220volt power outage, if you have a 12volt SLA battery, or a 9volt alkaline battery or a battery pack of appropiate voltage, you can charge your li-ions, and you always will have your flashlights running, while the SLA battery or whatever keeps charged.

I have read that circuitry of TR-001 is better than the 002. But if you see photos of the inside, they seem identical, but circuitry only for 1 channel, not 2

Thanks fran, looks like the TR-001 is back on the top of my list but I am thinking about getting 2 chargers. Maybe the TR-001 and the TR-002 so I have a back-up charger. Smile

Does anyone know of a charger that can accommodate three 18650s, and has selectable charge current so that I can charge 18650s at high current but 10440s at low current (not simultaneously)?

This is the one I have it is the TR-001 with a tenergy sticker on it from amazon so you don't have to wait forever for DX to send it.

Thanks for the suggestion, but that accommodates only two cells. :)

Personally, I would wait 2-3 weeks at that price. ;)

I use the TR-001 as well and all my cells come off the charger at 4.17v. It doesn't get hot while in use nor do my cells (slightest bit of "warm" though). But, it trickle charges if left in the charger after the green light. It adds about .01v every 60 min or so. I've accidently left a 17670 overnight and it was up to 4.25v by morning.
