FastTech SolarStorm SC01/02/03 lights

I don't have a caliper, but I'm measuring about 22mm x 2mm with a ruler.

how it handled a low/drained battery?

The SC01 I purchased and gifted to a friend in June has died this month, only lasted for three months. The light was operated using NiMH cells only, no 14500s. When he brought it back to me, I tested using both known-good cells and a 14500 but it wouldn't function either way. I completely disassembled the light, which turned out to be much easier than expected.

  • Press the head of the light firmly against a rubber surface, (e.g., old inner tube, shoe sole, etc) and twist CCW to remove bezel.
  • Remove lens/reflector/o-ring
  • Press pill out of body; I used a couple of stacked sockets of the correct diameter to fit the battery tube, then used a large C-clamp to press the pill out through the head.

On removing the driver from the pill, I noted corrosion on the components. It looked similar to what you would see if liquid had entered the light, but it's been kept dry. I cleaned and checked the LED and solder joints, but the driver is definitely dead. I'm fairly disappointed with how long this light worked.

Second note, the lens is an odd 22mm diameter. The light had been dropped once before, and the lens had cracked. The lens size isn't common, and I was unable to find a replacement lens through normal sources. I could have purchased a flat glass watch crystal cut-to-size via an ebay auction I found, but it would have been over $6 after shipping. That's the only option I had found after a cursory search...

flashlightlens has UCLp lens in that size, and close sizes as well. Just have to check the thickness, if it will work out. It's pricey but better than the stock for sure...

I haven't modded mine.. But think the driver can be replaced or piggybacked...

Does anyone know where to get spare switch boots from for these? Specifically the SC02 (18650 one).

My SC02 seems to have lost its one, so I can’t turn it on anymore.

my sc02 died over night…

used it not longer than 2 hours total.
pill is out - I will have a look when I get some time ( means baby and wife are sleeping when I don’t ;))

The switch boot from a Olight S10/15/20 can be made to fit and work.

My SC02 NW from BG died as well. But I don’t think it’s the switch - after pressing for 7 seconds it turns on in strobe mode so switch itself it works. There’s something wrong with the driver.

EDIT. I disassembled it, tightened everything, assembled again and it works! I don’t know what was wrong, driver was 0,5mm our of the pill so I pressed it flat but I don’t know if that was a reason. But I can see beam isn’t perfect now, there’s slight donut hole. And now lowest mode turns on after 2 seconds, not 4!

I have lost some hope in the sc series of lights. I was selling them for a while but i had too many returns. The driver died in a few from heat after they were ran for extended periods. When the light was off. The led would stay faintly lit. All the other bad ones had problems with the side switch. Bad design. The switch solder points are way too close to the pill. Sometimes the switch shorts out on the pill. And you have to press the button super hard to get the light on. It is too bad though because it was a neat little light.

My SC02 broke down again, symptoms are identical - they only thing that works is a strobe mode after 7 seconds of holding the switch.

So far the three i have been working great & used often. (SC01, 02, 03) i hope they stay working or the manufacturer fixed the issue people have been having as i like the design and form-factors of these. My SC01 with a Nichia 219 get used quite a bit and is my current Jacket EDC.

Anyone tried to get a replacement from fastech/solar storm? It’s obviously a consistent manufacturer mistake…

I got the money back and ordered a 1405 Instead

I got my SC02 last week. It worked the first time I tried, but now suddenly not working. I have no clue why it stops working after a week unused. Battery voltage still full.
What could be the problem ? Bad switch ?
From what I’ve read , it seems fixing this is a very delicate process.
This is the worst $15 I spent on a flashlight. Even my cheapest $2 worked for at least 3 weeks.

Press and hold the switch for 7 seconds. Does it enter stobe mode?

nope. the led stays dead.
Too bad I found this thread too late.
RMA will cost me more than half the price of SC02 alone.
This could only mean I just burnt my $15 for nothing.

I disassembled mine, tightened everything (circuit board was sticking out by a half mm), assmbled and it worked for a week before it died again. There’s one solution - throw it away and stay away from Solarstorms, they’re very unreliable.

Yup. I guess that’s the best thing to do.
I was just tempted by the size & the look.
For $5 more, I could get a Eagle Eye X6 SE which is fantastic compared to this piece of shxx.
This is the most expensive torch I’ve ever bought……$15 for just 2-3 min of light LOLLL

After hearing all of the driver failures others are having with these lights i must have gotten 3 lucky ones that still work great.
At least now i will be prepared for them to go dead. :stuck_out_tongue:

I’ve been carrying an SC01 CW since April and it hasn’t missed a beat, and I’m addicted to clicking the side switch often as a nervous habit. Annoys the women-folk to no end. I have never run it for an extended period on high, though. I seem to most use the long-press low to aid aging eyes, but is nice to have 500 lumens in such a small package when I need to see what’s in the woods. I ordered some a couple weeks ago for gifts and a NW for myself. Didn’t see all the issues people are having until now but when you can get three of them and a very good 14500 for the price of an Olight S15, it’s worth a gamble.
