Modifying a Led Lenser P7.2 - Pics Added

Hi guys, I thought I would start a new thread instead of hijacking someone else review thread.

I have started modifying this genuine P7.2, its actually dead easy to customise, everywhere I have read on the net I have read says otherwise, once I have finished I will post some pics.

I have started with the button on the bottom, remove the battery carrier and through it in draw, I dismantle the tail assembly from a spare C8 i have here, removed the switch from it, then removed the rubber boot at the bottom of the LL tail, then got a small green plaster plug, cut it back to the right size to act as a plunger for the switch, the switch then firmly sits in the tail cap with its round mounting plate sitting flush with tail cap, then I have soldered the plat to the LL tail cap housing, and thats it, button actuates perfectly, the spring is still the on the mounting plate and the battery can sit perfectly on top.

So an unprotected 18650 will fit lengthwise but will need sleeving, I will order a 25500 after testing this mod as I think that will be a perfect fit, the driver is one of the easiest mods to do as its a simple swap out with any board you want, the only issue I have here is its
a 21.5 board and there doesn’t seem to be many choices in that department, if anyone has link to a nice driver to suit 1 x 18650 with lo-med-hi settings and a max output of say 1500 to 1750mah or even copper spacers to adapt 17mm boards to 21.5 I would most appreciate it.

I have found on Fasttechs site a XP-G2 R5 which will also be a simple swap out, I could go to an XM-L2 U3 but the bigger chip may effect the lens, so I will stick with the XP-G2’s I’m really after superior battery life rather than more performance.

If this mod all works out I will take photos and show a step by step incase anyone else is interested in having some fun with an over priced but very attractive little torch.

The other thing to add, is all these mods are reversible, the torch was easier to take apart than I first thought.

LL P7.2 already has XP-G2 mounted on a copper plate with direct thermal path, why change it? If you want to change the tint, that I understand, but it will be hard to beat the performance of the original one without changing the LED type - which may or may not work well with the optic. It would be interesting to see how XM-L or XP-L would work with the optic (could be ugly, but what if…).

I can go XM-L2, I just did that to POP Lite T62, it had an XR-E original, go’s really well

How are you getting the negative to the driver board? Doesn’t the standard battery carrier have both terminals on one end, rather than the battery tube making contact with the driver?

How does every other torch do it? through the body :slight_smile:

I have already done this via installing the switch assembly into the tail cap

The only drama I’m having is sourcing a 20/20.5/21/22mm driver board or a 17mm to 20/20.5/21/22mm copper adaptor

The only board at deal extreme that is usable is the LD-29 and thats to much current for this project, I want to keep it below 2000mah

i really hope someone would fabricate a copper
version of the led lenser post/pill and overdrive
the xpg2 to 1000+ lumen then im sure we can have
a 1km thrower

Note really sure if your taking the piss, but I’m not out to create something that can blind interstellar space craft pilots, I’m really after giving this torch far better battery life and a little more power, the AAA setup really limits its capabilities, also everyones pet hate with this torch is its unregulated, well I’m out to solve that one :slight_smile:

So I have found an aluminium sump washer, OD: 22mm ID: 16.5mm absolutely perfect to adapt 17mm driver board, so I’m off to FT to choose a suitable driver.

Just finished, I used a 17mm driver board from a spare C8, it actually fits perfectly into a second recess in the pill area, the torch is functioning perfect, not sure what the output of this board is but way brighter now, the low setting is about were it was originally.

I have a P7.2 that i want to put a XPL on it. Where did you get that pill from? So i don’t have to distort the original, in case i want to go back.

I just refluxed a XPL into the XPG2 board :slight_smile: Used a 3amp driver and all this on 4XAAA. But i have ordered parts to get it to work with a 18650. Im hoping i can get at least 900lm on this guy.

Right now with 4xAAA its twice as bright from the Lux reading i did.
I will upgrade the XPL that I currently used (550Lm 1.5amps) to a 735lm 1.5amps. And will use 3amp driver. On theory it should hit over 1200lm. Only time will tell, once its built :stuck_out_tongue:

Planning on getting a P5.2 or a M1 to do some modding too :slight_smile:
