You might try her with a .380 semi-auto pistol, if you can get her to aim and fire, rather than the reverse. KelTek, Ruger and others make VERY compact versions, 7 shots, reasonable accuracy and far greater power than the .22 lr. I have no problem putting all 7 into a paper plate at 25 feet and that’s good enough for self-defense.
Another approach, if she just can’t shoot a firearm, is the pepper spray gel “shooter” (not “sprayer”) made by Kimber, the famous handgun company. 2 shots, accurate to around 15 feet and cannot blow back at her due to wind. Good luck, stay safe.
Yourrid - I used to sell and train. Some ladies have zero desire to carry although many will. They just do not like noise, recoil, flash, or complicated weapons etc. Those ladies will NEVER be good candidates for carry. In your case though, you mentioned an auto. My suggestion before you count her out is let her go at it with a revolver.
I am not going to get into a caliber war here BUT there is nothing wrong with 22. I have yet to find someone to say "go ahead - shoot me with it". Anything is better than nothing and shot placement is the most important thing. If you can get your hands on a 22 revolver great. If not, try and find a 3 or 4 inch 38 with light or slow loads and see how she does. If she does ok then she will do fine with either a 38 or a 22. FYI, many do not like the recoil of snubbies thus the 3 or 4 bbl. which btw there are lots of inexpensive retired police stock Smith's running around (their value is nil)

She is pretty good with the recoil. I’ve let her shoot both semi and revolver-style .22’s and she is a great shot. 38 Special, not a great shot but even I have trouble with it (It’s a pocket rocket). Heck, she shot a 12 gauge slug and didn’t fall over…
She is still learning gun safety and confidence, which just takes going to the range more often :bigsmile:
She likes to go for a run with the dog after work, and with the daylight savings time, it’s dark when she gets home. So she doesn’t feel safe going. I figured a flashlight that will burn retina’s and then stop the heart with 10 million volts is the way to go.
Yeah I wouldn’t go jogging with a gun unless I absolutely had to (and I’d probably not jog there first off since I’d want my aerobic capacity available for a fight), and with a dog too, that sounds like a recipe for disaster for someone who isn’t completely confident and strong enough to instantly control a non-pulling dog. Stun/light though, if its dark she’s already going to have it in her hands, and electric arc sound alone is a very good dog on dog fight canceling mechanism too, sounds like a good choice.
its not so well developed in production because non of the company would waste their money off on making something useless, if they are useful, im sure every law enforcement over the world will had them issued on every personal already.
honestly, stun-guns are horrible as a self-defense device, one of my buddy got his wrist almost cut off by an assailant when using it to defend himself from a machete welded mugger
the reason why, its because you need to get it extremely close to the target in order to make skin contact with the electric shocking bezel which is something stupid, as a natural reaction, the attacker would just grab your wrist and take it off from you, probably use it back on you, might end up even worst than you expect.
get a good, effective OC pepper spray, if you do care about her life, seriously.
if you still wanna stick around electric based weapon, get a Taser C2 or similar device that works in range without closing up to the attacker especially for untrained personal.

I use the Vipertek VTS-881 models and have for quite a while. They have really good output (and even throw) with the flashlight and they are very compact. The previous model, the VTS-880 had a much lower output even though it’s twice the size. The VTS-881 is a much better unit. I’ve been giving them out as gifts the last year and a half or so. But like all models in this space, they are fairly cheaply made in China, so you’re playing the lottery with every budget stun gun I’ve ever seen. The Viperteks can be quirky about charging, and a couple times I’ve pulled them out of the wall almost too hot to touch, where most of the time they charge fine.
Keron, I had thought about an actual taser (one that shoots prongs out), and I agree that they are MUCH more effective and safer than a hand held stun gun. She lives in a pretty nice neighborhood so I’m very confident that she will never have to use it (knock on wood). However, she needs something with a bright light for running and the sound alone that those stun guns make are enough to make a crook think twice about following her or even getting close to her. And it’s the peace of mind of having some kind of defense against a would be attacker. It might not be the MOST effective type, but it serves 2 purposes and it’s easy to handle.
get a bright flashlight with strobe ready feature, for example like a Nitecore P10, Klarus XT11, its bright enough to blind an attacker in nighttime.
Of course, it depends on the strategy you choose and what you are facing, a close contact stunner is more of a “prevention” or “shock and escape” weapon, which is good for people with less muscle power, its not a weapon to close distance on someone really. A machete wielding person in the US is extremely rare, your friend trying to face a machete opponent with a close contact stunner was a bad choice, yes, it would be better not to even pull a weapon like that out when faced with a machete or gun.
If you are going jogging with a dog, carrying discharge weapons can be a pretty dangerous thing: they have to be firmly secured and not out, and on pulling them out, your dog is going to be pulling on you, making aiming difficult without significant strength and confidence. If someone was going to go after a jogger with a dog and a bright light out, you probably also don’t have much of any time to draw and aim a gun since they have got to stop you somehow, making an already in hand close contact stunner more useful and unexpected to the assailant. And, if you can get a gun out fast enough somehow, aiming is compromised…and its already been said that at the shooting range she is more likely to shoot herself than the assailant, so I’d say gun type weapons are out of the question.
Pepper spray is a good choice too, but this also has to be drawn, safety taken off and aimed without looking at it, so you need to be sure she practices that and can do it without looking down at the spray. Pepper spray is distance disable and run, stun gun is close disable and run, but I think the light/stun advantages of warning/back off/surprise and blinding light in your hand already in use is infinitely better than having to draw something…especially for someone not combat inclined.

What sucks is the lumens output. It claims 80 lumens! I hope that’s not true as the video looks like it may be a little brighter.
I may have to buy it, tear it down, post some pictures on here and see if anyone feels like modding it for me.
At one point, I gave my girlfriend pepperspray, she took a class, etc…she ended up always having it jammed somewhere in her purse…essentially unusable in an emergency.
in the end of the day, stun-gun is never a better choice for self defense, like i said earlier even with empty handed, its possible for an attacker grab the device away from you when trying to reach it to the attacker’s body, you cant just spray and run without making close contact like a pepper spray user.
I like the concept, I’m just concerned that a stun gun/flashlight combination will do a bad job at two things instead of a good job at either.

I have to agree. Pepper spray would be much better. Not completely without merit though. My carry tools vary with my enviorment. I purchased a Vipertek combo stun gun flashlight for my visits to the dog park. I’ve been going for years and have run into trouble several times. I’d prefer not to mace a pooch. Their sense of smell is so strong the pain is unbearable for them. I have defused two incidents with just a few zaps in the offending dogs general direction. It’s quite loud, with an crackling eerie sounding discharge. Puts off some Tiny but Visible little lightning bolts as well. Scares the piss out of them. They just run away. Hell the rechargeable Flashlight alone was worth $14.00 YMMV

1)The effectiveness of those cheap stun guns is that they do hurt like hell but without the arc of the spreading probes they will not have the spread to create a large arc of current so while they may cause pain your “shot placement ” is going to be much more important with a stun gun. Picture shooting paper targets with a single shotgun with a bayonet vs a knife and realize the limitations of each.
2) Having both been stun-gunned and taken the ride I will say that being stunned if it is not to the neck or over the heart then dropping the bad guy is almost impossible to do. a good 4-5 second bust on each vital spot for most attackers will not so much drop the target but take the fight out of an attacker. The myth of instant drop of any electronic device is movie magic but for control, through pain compliance, the stun guns are adequate for the propose. I don’t trust her yet to deploy mace or pepper spray properly yet… I need to spend time with her and practice !
1) In close-in quarters, pepper spray mist can affect the user as well if they did not have time to deploy the spray from a safe distance. Especially, if surprised and under duress…

Advantage of some pepper spray is that the attacker will have colored, hard to remove dye that can be later used to identify the offender.
I guess pepper spray for long distance engagement where the victim has enough time to safely prep and aim for the shot safely and Stun gun for in-close engagement!

I had a good friend who gave CHL classes here in NM. I used to help him with them. We once had an attractive blond ER nurse in a class. She told that once she worked the late night shift. Unknown to her was a guy stalking her. One night a little after mindight she was going to her car, and suddenly the guy jumped out and from the rear and got a hold on her neck. He said he was going to rape and then kill her.
As it happened she had a stun gun and carried it in her hand. With some difficulty she was able to get it around her back and place it on the guy. He fell down and she jumped on top of him and while screaming kept the stun gun on him tightly. He was incapacitated until the security got there. She said she was trying to kill the guy, but of course, the stun gun wasnt lethal.
Although many dismiss it, her stun gun saved her life.
In many places carrying a gun will be illegal. My daughter carries a small oc spray when jogging. I think the jel is best as it doesn’t take you out too.
