Yes, these will work with the stock maglite reflector. The larger FM heads just have a small opening.

To the uninitiated could you clarify which maglight these are suitable for, is this a drop-in + driver sort of thing, do you retain focusing, how does the heat pass outward onto the shell? I have a few other questions but well I don’t know what they are yet!

These are a DIY part meaning you will have to put the emitter and driver in yourself.

They fit any of the newer D cell maglite tubes.

The heat is transferred to the body from the sink to the neck of the light.

Yes the light will still be focusable. The sink can slide up and down inside the neck for use with various size heads, and focus is changed by threading the head up and down. For a standard mag reflector focus will be near the base of the reflector and for the big heads made for incan use its been my experience that they typically focus up higher in the head ( hence the longer pedestal).

@ nightspy: What do you mean ridiculed? Several members had done it long time before that graphic was posted. Match, O-L, 18sixfifty, IaA4wheeler and yours truly comes to mind just off the top of my head. It is just that it is a helluva lot of trouble for... nothing really when we can now buy sinkpads and noctigons and whatnot. No offence meant. Just maybe I don't get what you are driving at here. Match has a build here that predates that post by some 2 years with that exact idea carried out. Just saying.

Nothing other than people saying it wasn’t worth it yet here it is. Certainly not claiming first art in any way.

Since I'm the only person in this thread that posted here before the above quote and also posted in your linked thread, I guess you're referring to me. If I made you feel ridiculed, I truly apologize. I felt you had a good concept and asked good questions that we do not yet know the answers to yet. If you look at my MT-G2 builds, you will see they are all direct mounts similar to your concept and VOB's product here. So I'm walking the walk, not just talking the talk.
I mounted them direct mostly to get the emitters higher into the reflector for focus purposes. I hoped that there would also be a thermal benefit. As I said in your thread, I don't think enough testing has been done to determine if that is the case or not.
VOB's product here provides a pedestal which can be very handy in a Mag build. The material he is using sure sounds like a good material for tall pedestal situation.
I don't see any conflict from what I said in your thread and what I have said here. If there is, I certainly didn't intend it and again apologize if I said anything to make you feel ridiculed. You're clearly a bright guy and I have nothing but respect for you.

I certainly didn’t single you out either, 4 wlr… the overall tone of the thread turned pretty much “why?”, and I just thought it interesting that someone went to the trouble to show why. Most prominent is the fact that the wires remain below the emitter which has been a significant discussion topic on a lot of Noctigon threads where reflectors were problematic with the wire pad location.

Well, speaking of respecting threads. Let's let VOB sell some of his product here. It's the kind of thing I would make for myself as I'm just too stubbornly DYI. But I can say with certainty, it wouldn't look nearly as good.

The copper to LED bonding is an amazing method to use when building high wattage builds.

Arguably one of the best flashlight builders Lamdalights himself mass produced this copper to LED bonding years ago, but it was something only he and a few like Milky were doing successfully. Now, with this heatsink it appears possible for the average folk to be able to attempt this feat too. For me at least when I try it, the LED acts like a drunk on Ice Skates…very hard to get it centered and bonded to copper.

On a side note I had a first generation Lamdalights SST-90 with 20mm PVC and then had him do copper to LED direct bonding and the OTF lumens increased by at least 25%, especially at the 3 minute mark. If I recall correctly it was 1200 vs. 1700 OTF at 3min from same SST-90.
