Your best modified flashlight (buy) in 2014?

All lights are welcomed wolfdog1226. :)

Would be interesting to hear a few words on why the various lights were picked and not just numbers.

I dont have a favorite light I have modified myself but there has been more than one modified light on this forum the keeps the appetite going. I dont own it but I dont think there would be to many that would disagree. Best modified light of 2014, drum roll, is.

My only seriously modded light... Supbeam K40t*, ~400kcd.

* t = modded by _the_

mm15vn

Triple Nichia at 5.8A.

Yow, this is a hard question. All but three of my all-time favorites are modded lights, and I didn’t really start modding until 2014. The following are listed roughly in some kind of order, with the most notable or frequently-used at the top:

Hands-down coolest light: S10 Ti w/ MELD from tterev3 (R+G+B+W+UV)

Best overall EDC: CNQG brass 18650 w/ DC-Fix, Nichia 219B, and custom firmware. (smallest 18650 light around, pretty, tough, good quality)

Other best EDC: Roche F6 triple-Nichia-219B w/ Ferrero Rocher driver and battery indicator lights, from Comfychair. Also came with what is now my primary dev driver, a spare Ferrero Rocher, and I’ve made a few firmwares for it. I particularly enjoy the ramping UI firmware, which on my unit can ramp smoothly from ~0.3 lm to ~1800 lm while indicating realtime voltage under load. From off, it gives instant access to moon, turbo, and last-used level.

Best hotrod (output-to-size ratio) (also, most stylish): Sinner Cypreus 100mm copper w/ triple-XP-L and BLF17DD driver. I’m still refining the firmware though, and planning to give it a nicer tint after parts become available.

Toughest EDC: Convoy S7 w/ Nichia 219B, DC-Fix, custom firmware, and SF L2 clip. Pretty, versatile, and nearly indestructible.

Best thrower: JAX Z1 w/ de-domed XP-G2 and BLF22DD (looks like a light saber against a dark sky)

Best tint / vivid color: Wide-spectrum BlackShadow Terminator (unfinished, still need to give it better firmware)

Thanks! The numbers were the main reason I got the lights! I love throwers and the best combo light the TK75vn w/ an awesome combination of flood and throw!

Also a few of them are relatively compact and have awesome throw for their size.

I got the impression you liked throwers/long range lights. :)

Modified TK75 were on the top of my list as well. I have plans for even more throw out of that light next year. ^^ Actually, Ive got several plans for TK75`s. Great host...

__________

Btw, "Sipik headlight" is the only light/host that have been mentioned three times. Mod host of the year? Or have you made or bought something more worthy of that title?

Keep the mods coming guys and gals. Lets see what people have been up to this year in case we missed some of the great mods out there.

  1. RMM modified Supfire L1. Per RMM measurement it is putting out about 7000 Lumens in turbo mode. Impressive.
  1. Another member modified RMM Supfire M6 converted to red LEDs for night vision sensitivity preservation and animal viewing. Ended up being modified twice to get the final result.

Best pure thrower: Deft X
Medium thrower: Vinh-modded Maxtoch SN6X-2X
Multi-purpose:
Fenix TK70 - dedomed xml2 , modded by Saabluster
Supbeam X40vn - dedomed xml2, etc. by Vinh (surprisingly out-throws/shines the TK70!)
and the incoming modded SR52 and Courui DO1

I can’t wait to see Dale’s list in this thread

I have lost count of the lights i modded in 2014, some MT-G2 mods, dozens of Driver, emitter, body, switch mods, etc.
Probably my favorite is the custom built SteamPipe Light. Its one of the most used lights i have too as i dragged it along on various camping trips. Surprisingly It’s blue glow-light is still glowing (but very dimly) past a year and few months on a pair of Alkaline AA cells.

I love RaceR86’s stick grenade light and DBSAR’s Steam pipe light. Both are unique in the true meaning of the word and took imagination to come up with. The steam pipe one also looks totally steampunk. The stick grenade is probably easier to find in Europe and Russia than here a it looks to be totally German so far as I know. No WWII German abandoned supply dumps in the USA.

My choice is the direct drive twisty Smiling Shark SS-5039/5038.

It has an IMR 10440, an XP-G2, no switch and only a tiny bit of spring. I avoid using fully charged cells in it, but the plastic reflector started to melt, so I junked a Black Cat for the aluminum reflector.
The pill is hollow, but the thick direct thermal star soldered to it makes up for that.

Runners up are the 3 x 7135, BLF Tiny10, two group SS-5039,

And the Yezl t9 with the big lens:

Getting close to the end of the year and the modding is still going on.

My TCR-01 had been sitting in my flashlight drawer for a year unused. Nice light, but had a horrible ringy beam. I had a 5000k XML2 in it, but that didn’t help the beam pattern much.

Last night I changed the emitter for triple Nichia 219B with Carclo 10507 optic. A bit of a kluge mod. I filed the edges of a 20mm triple noctigon so it would fit into the light, and did the same for the side posts of the optic. Using the stock driver with the driver wires extended were then used to wire it up.

It’s a “kluge” job because I didn’t put a heatsink under the star. I used thermal grease at the edges, but the area underneath the star is empty. One of these days, I’ll probably get around to making a heatsink for it.

On the other hand, maybe it doesn’t need it. I figure this light is only producing 500 lumens or so. It’s interesting comparing it side-by-side with my 18500 equipped Convoy S2+ mini.

With batteries installed, both lights weigh exactly the same (2.9 oz). The convoy is very slightly larger in dimensions. The Jetbeam with its shiny titanium is far more beautiful. Both have triple emitters using the same optic.

But when I turn them both on at max side-by-side, it doesn’t even look like the TCR-01 is on. 500 high-CRI lumens from the jetbeam just doesn’t compare to approx 3000 lumens from the Convoy.

For 2014, it would by the X6 Bike Light that I won from ledonam.

Though I haven’t made all the mods that I wanted on it yet, initial modding gave me 3685 lumens (45.4 watts) which is an overkill for my bike.

That is an awesome bike light!

wow a bike light thats brighter than most car headlights.

Here’s a beamshot comparison between my X6 bike light and the 110 watt headlights of my car:

Where in the Philippines are you? My Father used to be the manager of the Caltex oil refinery in Batangas. We originally went out there in July 1953, so over 60 years ago.
