Better throwing p60 drop in

dedome the led will get you a lot more throw. (or switch to a dedomed XP-G2 for even moar throw)

At the risk of posting “on Topic” in this thread, why not just buy a light with a bigger, deeper reflector? Something like a Convoy C8? Those P60 drop-ins/hosts don’t usually have the best thermal paths anyway.

If you need to stay with a p60, dedoming is about the only thing you can do for more throw.

Another option is a Convoy M2. It will give a little more throw than a p60, but without the big head of a C8 (but the C8 still has better throw)

A drop in with an XP-E2 driven hard will give you max throw from a p60 however you will lose the side spill.

Dedoming an XM-L will increase throw but you will also lose much of the side spill and the tint will shift to the warm spectrum.

Your current emitter is a first generation XM-L, since that is what your used to you probably won’t like the pencil beam of the XP-E2. So a good upgrade would be a second generation XM-L the XM-L2 driven around 3 amps, since this appears to be a work light no need to get over zealous with current. Your p60 host should handle this amout of heat just fine.

RMM has done all the work for you, XM-L2 on a Noctigon with a Qlite driver at 3.04 amps. Select an XM-L2 with your tint choice and a smooth reflector. The XM-L2 U3 1A will be the brightest if you prefer cool white.

the current emitter he has works just fine, no need to upgrade to the latest model. (unless he wants too.)

I believe that’s what he was looking for and the reason for the post. An upgrade to his p60 light.

yea my current light does work well, I was looking for upgrade alternatives but I really like where this thread went so next week I'm probably gonna order the XinTD flashlight, a p60 xml2-u3-1a drop in for my current light.... And the convoy m2. My addiction has fully set in. If these lights are half what the reviews claim it will be better than buying those cheap $30 Wally world lights every other week that break easily and really aren't bright enough in the first place.

Welcome to Flashoholics Anonymous.

All items that you listed are excellent choices and the reviews are accurate.

I sometimes browse the flashlight section at Walmart and get a good laugh.

If you like the smaller head size of P60 lights a nice compromise is the Convoy M1, not as good a thrower as a C8 but much better than a P60 with better thermal management if you overdrive it a bit. If you don’t mind the head size though the C8 is hard to beat.

I agree with Rufusbduck that a C8 is an great thrower, I see lots of people complain about the size of the head.

There is an easy solution to that problem and it is the C2, exactly like the C8 but with a smaller head. I have 2 C2’s and everything is interchangable with C8’s except for reflector and lens. They make a great host since brass or copper pills for C8’s are readily available.

C2’s have a little less throw since they have a smaller reflector but they look much more proportionate in my opinion.

Now you’ll be facing a whole new problem…which light to use/carry. Evolution only gave you two hands so using more than two lights can be a hassle. Having pants with five or six pockets sounds like it will make it easier to carry more lights. However trust me, your family will threaten to disown you if you go walking around town with a light sticking out of every pocket.

I’m surprised no one has suggested the EEx6

Me too, seems like a great solution. I really do like C2’s also, like Hi-Beam said. Are there good ones, or good hosts currently available?

I am considering the XM-L2 U3 1A version, but I do not see specifications listed for the amps at the various mode steps.

Has anyone checked one of these with a quality multimeter to verify that 100% is actually 3.04 amps, & etc.?

Also, is it true that this dropin step sequence is reverse of normal (starts on low and progresses higher) and if so, what is the advantage of this?

2 Mode: 15% — 100%
3 Mode: 2% — 25% — 100%
4 Mode: Moonlight — 2% — 25% — 100%
5 Mode: 5% — 30% — 100% — Strobe — Beacon

I'm guessing it's because the appeal of the q-lite is the moonlite mode .So it can be used to go to the bathroom without blowing out your night vision .in general i always perfer a light starting in low anyway .to me it just makes more sense .

if you don't want the moonlight mode than there are other driver options out there that are cheaper that do what you want

The best throwing P60 drop-in uses the venerable Cree XR-E which was made w/ a 90 deg. optic vs. the newer 120 - 135 deg. optics. If you absolutely have to have max throw that is the emitter to use but you will have to hunt to find them. There are custom P60 builders that can assemble whatever you desire. That said, as others have already pointed out a decent C8 or similar model will out-throw any P60.

As to the ‘reverse’ modes used by the MTN Elec. drop-in. The advantage in starting on ‘low’ is simple, you avoid blinding yourself or others when you switch on your light. However, since the drop-in driver has mode memory if you used HIGH last it will come on in HIGH.

True a C8 will out throw a p60. But the thing is, a p60 will quite easily fit in your trouser pocket, while a C8 is a little on the large size.

A well driven XP-G2 in a p60 will throw much better than a smaller tube light or an XM-L2 p60. But still offer good spill beam and lumens.

Int’l Outdoor do offer an XP-G2 p60, but with a slightly lower performing driver @ around 2.3 amps.

If you don’t mind custom building then you could easily make an XP-G2 p60 drop-in using the bare drop-in from FastTech, a Qlite driver and a Noctigon mounted LED.

You could also experiment with a de-domed XM-L2 or even a de-domed XP-G2.

And there is always the XP-E2 as well. Will want lower amps. But should throw well.

All depends how throwy vs floody you want.

How do you hold a boat down?

I have measured current draw on many of these 105c/Qlite drivers and they are very accurate as long as you have a battery that is able to deliver the juice.

You fill it with water so it wont float away. H)
