Big Storm Coming to New England!

In Maine, that snow will probably hang around until late March or into early April, depending on how quickly things warm up and if we get rain.

Got about 8-10" overnight, with another 1-3" due to fall today. Already dug my car out, but still stuck due my lot not having been plowed.

+1! I was talking about bumper hitching just the other day.

When I was about 15 my little brothers each got a set of “Snow Boats” for Christmas. They were these cheap little skis, more like little sleds you strapped on your boots. Strap those babies on and find an oil delivery truck and you could go for miles!

One Christmas got a brand new Ski Jacket. My Snorkel Jacket was still soaked from the night before, so I wore the Ski jacket and when belly hitching, the guy dragged us across an intersection that was dry trying to knock us off, I made it across, but my new ski jacket was shredded. A couple day’s later the ole man asked why I wasn’t wearing it? I told him it was for skiing? Didn’t go skiing for a long time……then I out grew it!

Nice!

I just got done clearing out my driveway with my snow blower. I had about 6 inches with a changeover to freezing rain. The temps dropped like a rock and it is back to snow again. Its about 17 degrees out now.

Snow has finally stopped but we’re dancing with single digits now, the low tonight is supposed to get close to 0.

Got ~ 20” last Tuesday, then another 11” Friday, today another 12” w/ wind chill about –20F. Seems like a typical Maine winter when I was a kid.

Yep- the snowbanks are looking like what I remember as a kid.

I was also in single digits . Wind chills were –15 to –20 degrees. This has been a very COLD winter. So goes the global warming.

How’s a car starting/running?

Good question... lots and lots of dead batteries around here because of the cold. My fuel pump died recently on a particularly cold night... positive the cold was at least partly at fault.

Asked because I once had a bad experience long time ago with –15 degree cold — dead/weak battery and cold engine. Guess there’s still no simple fix or prevention. Keep warm.

Maybe someone from a colder climate could chime in, because while I've been in -50 temperatures a couple of times, I never stayed there for any length of time, but I remember a work colleague of mine who lived in Alaska mentioning that they needed to plug their cars in at work lots to keep them warm. There must be other solutions for those that need to be away from electricity for a while though.

Guess there is no easy solution.

Pretty common in the really cold climates. Electric block heaters or battery warmers or ‘old school’ 100W light under hood + blanket over the hood. If you look at auto battery specs the higher CCA [cold cranking amps] models are for sub-zero applications. Newer cars use low viscosity oils 5W or 0W plus high discharge electronic ignition and gear reduction starters make for better low temp starting.

Just for the record we had almost –15F this morning w/ a light 10 mph wind…. wind chill equivalent –35 F

When I was in High School and had lots of energy and even less brains than I have now, I bolted a porcelain light socket in series with a diode and the battery. Hooked it to 110 AC and had both a 1A trickle charger and 100W of warmth. Looking back on it now, I can see it was dangerous and stupid. Get the polarity on the un grounded plug wrong and the chassis of the car is sitting at about 100v relative to ground.

If you’re worried about your battery losing it’s juice

because of the freezing temperatures and you are

somewhat mechanically able , take the battery out

of the vehicle and place it where there’s some type

of warmth until you’re ready to use it again. Try this

only if you can remove and replace the battery pretty

quickly without too many problems.

A trick I have used many times on a very cold day is first cold crank the engine for just a few seconds. Then wait a little while. The current that ran through it’s internal resistance will warm to insides a little and make the chemicals more reactive. Of course you need to have a healthy battery in the first place.

If you had a older car with a 6V battery you could take a 12V battery and…………….drive the biggest nail you could find as close as you could in the center of the battery.

You would run the starter off the 12V and everything off the “Center Tap 6V”

And never try to jump a 6V car to a 12V car
